Five days to go. Whether you binged the first two seasons last week or haven’t thought about Middle-earth since 2024, here is everything you need to know before The Rings of Power Season 3, from the release schedule and the new cast to a quick recap of where Season 2 left everyone.
Spoiler warning: this guide contains full spoilers for Seasons 1 and 2. There are no spoilers for Season 3 beyond what Prime Video has officially revealed.
đź“… When Does The Rings of Power Season 3 Come Out?
Season 3 premieres on Wednesday, November 11, 2026, exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories. Unlike Season 2, which mostly went weekly, the eight episodes arrive in three quick batches:
- November 11: Episodes 1 to 4
- November 18: Episodes 5 and 6
- November 25: Episodes 7 and 8 (season finale)
That means the entire season is out in just two weeks. Episodes drop worldwide at the same time as in the US, so there is no regional waiting game this time.
⏪ Quick Recap: What Happened in Seasons 1 and 2?
Season 1 ended with the big reveal that Halbrand, the charming exile Galadriel brought back from the sea, was Sauron all along. Before Galadriel figured it out, his advice had already made it possible for the Elven-smith Celebrimbor to forge the three Elven rings.
Season 2 went all in on the deception. Sauron returned to Eregion in a new disguise as “Annatar” and manipulated Celebrimbor into crafting the Seven rings for the Dwarves and the Nine for Men. By the end, Celebrimbor discovered that the Nine had been made with Sauron’s own blood instead of mithril. Here is how the finale left the most important players:
- Eregion fell. Sauron killed Celebrimbor and took the nine rings from Galadriel, while Adar was killed by his own disillusioned Orcs.
- The survivors escaped. Durin IV finally sent his army to help, allowing Gil-galad, Elrond, Galadriel, Arondir and the other survivors to flee to a valley north of the city, the place that becomes Rivendell.
- Khazad-dûm lost its king. Durin III was attacked by the Balrog beneath the mithril mine and named his son Durin IV king before the cavern collapsed.
- The Stranger found his name. After rejecting the Dark Wizard’s offer, the Stranger found his staff and came to believe he will be known as Gandalf.
- NĂşmenor turned dark. Ar-PharazĂ´n learned through the palantĂr that Halbrand was Sauron, used it to discredit MĂriel, and arrested the Faithful. Only Elendil escaped, carrying the sword Narsil.

Daniel Weyman returns as Gandalf, now fully grown into the wizard Tolkien fans know.
🌋 What Is The Rings of Power Season 3 About?
Season 3 jumps five years ahead from the fall of Eregion, and Middle-earth looks a lot worse. Sauron’s armies now control most of the continent. Only three places are still free: Khazad-dĂ»m, where the Dwarves have sealed themselves inside their halls, and the Elven realms of Lindon and Rivendell, which are protected by the Three Rings. During those five years, both Rivendell and Sauron’s tower of Barad-dĂ»r have been built.
From Barad-dûr, Sauron is working on the One Ring, the weapon he believes will win him the war for good. That forces Elves, Dwarves, Men and Wizards into a race against time, and into new and sometimes uneasy alliances, to stop him before he finishes it.
The season is set at the height of what Tolkien called the War of the Elves and Sauron. According to showrunner J.D. Payne, the writers took two different parts of Tolkien’s history, with the Battle of the GwathlĂł inspiring some of the earlier events, and braided them into one story with a compressed timeline. They also wanted a tighter, more focused season than the sprawl of the first two, with every storyline tied together by Sauron and the forging of the Ring. If you need a refresher, the season reportedly opens with a prologue that recaps the war so far.
We already covered the official featurette about the creation of the Ring in our article on The Rings of Power Season 3’s One Ring featurette. According to the showrunners, the forging sequence took two weeks to film and is the most technically challenging sequence they have shot for the series.
đź’Ť The Nine Become the NazgnagĂ´l
Remember those nine rings Sauron took in Eregion? Season 3 introduces the Men who receive them and shows their transformation into the Ringwraiths. Before they fully become NazgĂ»l, the show calls them the NazgnagĂ´l, a term the writers built from Tolkien’s Black Speech to mean “Ring-servants”. Fell beasts already appear in the preview footage, and four costumed NazgnagĂ´l even crashed the show’s San Diego Comic-Con panel in July.
The most notable of them is Khamûl the Easterling of Rhûn, played by Zubin Varla (Andor). Khamûl is the one Nazgûl whose name Tolkien actually revealed, which makes him a big deal for lore fans.
🧝 New Characters in The Rings of Power Season 3
Prime Video has confirmed several major new faces for Season 3:
- Jamie Campbell Bower (Stranger Things) as Celeborn: Galadriel’s long-lost husband. In the show, Celeborn has been missing since the First Age and is believed to be dead. The showrunners say he was held prisoner by Orcs during that time, and the season includes a flashback to when he and Galadriel first met.
- Zubin Varla as KhamĂ»l: the Easterling of RhĂ»n and one of Sauron’s Ring-servants.
- Eddie Marsan as Thrain: the older brother of King Durin IV.
- Andrew Richardson as Anárion: Elendil’s younger son and Isildur’s brother. In Tolkien’s history, Anárion and Isildur go on to found Gondor together.
- Adam Young as Marnûkh: a mysterious Orc who may not be what he seems.
- Simon Pegg as the voice of the Balrog: the beast beneath Khazad-dûm returns and, for the first time, it speaks.
- Amber Mendez-Martin and Lee Braithwaite as Gerda and Gamli: the teenage children of Durin IV and Disa.

Morfydd Clark’s Galadriel finally gets a reunion with her long-lost husband Celeborn this season.
🛡️ Who Is Returning in Season 3?
Most of the core cast is back. Charlie Vickers returns as Sauron, alongside Morfydd Clark as Galadriel, Robert Aramayo as Elrond, Benjamin Walker as Gil-galad, Daniel Weyman as Gandalf, Owain Arthur as Durin IV, Sophia Nomvete as Disa, Lloyd Owen as Elendil, Maxim Baldry as Isildur, Ema Horvath as Eärien, Trystan Gravelle as PharazĂ´n, Cynthia Addai-Robinson as MĂriel, Ismael Cruz CĂłrdova as Arondir, Ciarán Hinds as the Dark Wizard and Rory Kinnear as Tom Bombadil.
A couple of returns are worth flagging. Charles Edwards is listed in the Season 3 cast as Celebrimbor, even though the character died in Season 2, and according to showrunner J.D. Payne he returns as a memory that haunts Sauron while he forges the One Ring. Robert Aramayo also plays Elrond’s brother Elros in a flashback.
The biggest relationship to watch? Galadriel, Celeborn and Sauron. The official trailer already hints at an unlikely love triangle, and the showrunners have called the Galadriel and Celeborn reunion the first true love story the series has told.
🎬 Trailers and Behind the Scenes
Prime Video debuted the first teaser at San Diego Comic-Con on July 24, 2026, where the Thrain, Anárion, Marnûkh and Balrog reveals were also made. The full official trailer followed on October 21 and leans heavily into war, creatures and the forging of the Ring. Creatures confirmed for the season include the Balrog, flying Fell beasts and the Mûmakil war elephants.
Behind the camera, J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay return as showrunners. Episodes were directed by Charlotte Brändström, Sanaa Hamri and Stefan Schwartz, and filming took place at Shepperton Studios and on location around the UK from spring to October 2025, while the visual effects team scanned the Lauterbrunnen valley in Switzerland, which inspired Tolkien’s Rivendell, to recreate it on screen. Bear McCreary is back on the score. An original song from the season, “Morning Shall Come” featuring Aurora, is out now as a single, and the Season 3 soundtrack album follows digitally on November 13.

Robert Aramayo returns as Elrond and also plays his brother Elros in a flashback.

Final Words
Love it or hate it, The Rings of Power has always been slow to get to the parts of Tolkien’s Second Age that fans actually know. Season 3 looks like the moment that changes. A five-year time jump, Sauron as a full-on villain, the Ringwraiths taking shape and the One Ring itself make this the most important season of the show so far. We’ll be watching on November 11, and you can expect more coverage here on Gamersuniverse.
