Xbox Manager Deletes His X Account After Saying Studios Without AI ‘Should Not Be in the Business of Being a Business’

Xbox senior business strategy manager Brandon Stirrup has ignited a fresh debate over generative AI in game development, then deleted his X account less than 24 hours after setting it off. In a lengthy thread posted on October 18, Stirrup argued that Microsoft already relies heavily on AI internally, said he had built a basic, unpolished soccer game himself with an AI coding assistant over a single weekend despite never having made a game before, and declared that studios ignoring the technology have no real future.

A Weekend Project Turns Into a Manifesto

Stirrup explained that he spent only around three hours of active work across two days putting the project together, framing the exercise as proof that anyone can now build a game. He went on to argue that any multi-year studio plan that doesn’t account for AI is effectively obsolete, describing the technology as an unavoidable force reshaping the next five to ten years of development rather than an optional tool.

The Line That Started the Backlash

The most contentious part of Stirrup’s thread was his verdict on studios that refuse to adopt AI in any form. His stance on those developers was blunt.

“You should not be in the business of being a business.”

He added that he was willing to accept professional consequences for being so blunt, framing his comments as an uncomfortable truth few at Microsoft are willing to admit publicly, and claimed that hundreds of Xbox employees already use AI in their daily workflow, a figure that has not been independently verified. The remarks quickly drew backlash from developers and players, many of whom pointed to recent hits built without any AI involvement as evidence against his argument.

Deleted Within a Day

Stirrup deleted his X account entirely less than 24 hours after the thread went up. A source inside Xbox told PC Gamer that he made the move because of the sheer volume of replies he was receiving, rather than any directive from Microsoft. The timing is awkward for Xbox on more than one front: the company recently stood up its own Xbox Labs division to explore AI-driven tools, and Stirrup’s comments landed the same week Battlefield Studios faced its own AI-related cosmetic backlash, declining to confirm or deny whether generative tools were involved in Battlefield 6’s glitchy Season 5 skins.
