The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel Is Official as Bethesda Finally Reveals the Name

After more than eight years of waiting, the next Elder Scrolls game finally has a proper name. Bethesda has officially revealed that The Elder Scrolls VI will be called The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel, confirming the subtitle that fans had been piecing together for months and that a report had pointed to just days ago.

Revealed During Bethesda’s 40th Anniversary

The announcement arrived on November 3 at the very end of Celebrating 40 Years of Bethesda Game Studios, a lengthy retrospective video uploaded to the official Bethesda Softworks YouTube channel. After looking back at the studio’s history and thanking fans for sticking with it through the highs and lows, Todd Howard acknowledged that players constantly ask about The Elder Scrolls VI and said the anniversary felt like the right moment to finally share what the game is actually called.

What followed was short but loaded with meaning: an Elder Scroll emerging from desert sand, the new Sentinel logo, and an inscription credited to a Moth Priest serving the High Queen of Hammerfell. It opens with the line “The scroll offered only a shimmer, a veil thinly lifted to my eyes” before hinting at a lost future and an undone victory, a fitting tease for a game long rumored to dig into the history of the Elder Scrolls themselves.

Welcome to Hammerfell

Sentinel is one of the major kingdoms and port cities of Hammerfell, the desert homeland of the Redguards on the Iliac Bay in western Tamriel. Between the sand-covered scroll and the Hammerfell credit on the inscription, the reveal all but confirms the province as the setting, something fans have suspected ever since the original teaser showed an arid coastline back at E3 2018. Hammerfell has been visited before in The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall, The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard and The Elder Scrolls Online, but it has never been the main stage of a mainline entry in the modern era.

The Clues Were There All Along

The name hardly came out of nowhere. Fans had connected Sentinel to a hidden code spotted in Starfield’s character creator a few years ago, and the theory gained serious momentum in August when Xbox CEO Asha Sharma posted about watching a playthrough of The Elder Scrolls VI with the subtitle hidden behind eight asterisks, exactly the length of “Sentinel”. On October 29, The Verge’s Tom Warren then reported that Bethesda was about to make the name official, adding that the game would be set in Hammerfell and explore the history of the Elder Scrolls artifacts. Many expected the reveal to land on Skyrim’s 15th anniversary on November 11, but Bethesda chose its own studio anniversary instead.

No Release Date Yet

Anyone hoping for gameplay will have to keep waiting. Bethesda did not share a release date, a release window or a platform list, and the studio noted on social media that development continues and that it will be some time before it is ready to show more. For now, Sentinel is a title, a logo and a handful of lore breadcrumbs, but after years of near silence since the 2018 teaser, it is the clearest sign yet that Bethesda’s next journey to Tamriel is taking shape.

While you wait, Bethesda’s back catalog keeps growing in other ways, with Oblivion recently joining GOG’s DRM-free Preservation Program.
