Ciri Lore Explained: Who Is Cirilla of Cintra and What Happened Before The Witcher 4
Every Witcher story eventually comes back to the same girl. Geralt of Rivia spends three games and seven books hunting monsters, dodging kings and arguing with sorceresses, but the thread that ties all of it together is a child he claimed before she was even born. With The Witcher 3 Remastered pulling a new wave of players back to the Continent and The Witcher 4 putting her front and center as its protagonist, there has never been a better moment for the full story. This is Ciri lore explained from start to finish: who Ciri really is, where her powers come from, why so many factions want her, and what happened to her before The Witcher 4.
We are covering Ciri’s story as it is established in Andrzej Sapkowski’s Witcher saga and CD Projekt Red’s games, and we are flagging clearly where something is developer commentary or fan interpretation rather than confirmed canon.
β οΈ Spoiler Warning β οΈ This article covers the complete plots of the Witcher books and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, including every ending.
π¦ Quick Facts: Who Is Ciri?
- Full name, Cirilla Fiona Elen Riannon, Princess of Cintra, known as the Lion Cub of Cintra
- Family, daughter of Princess Pavetta and the cursed knight Duny, granddaughter of Queen Calanthe, the Lioness of Cintra
- Bloodline, carrier of the Elder Blood, descended from the elven sorceress Lara Dorren aep Shiadhal
- Elder Speech name, Zireael, which means “swallow”
- Bound to Geralt by, the Law of Surprise, and raised by him and Yennefer as their adopted daughter
- Appears in, the Witcher saga novels, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (2015) and, as the main playable character, The Witcher 4
π¦ The Law of Surprise: How Ciri Was Promised to Geralt
Ciri’s story starts before she exists. In the short story “A Question of Price” from the collection The Last Wish, Geralt attends the betrothal feast of Princess Pavetta of Cintra, daughter of the formidable Queen Calanthe. The evening is interrupted by a stranger in armor who calls himself Urcheon of Erlenwald and claims Pavetta’s hand. His real name is Duny, and he is under a curse that gives him the appearance of a hedgehog-like creature by day. Years earlier, Calanthe’s late husband had promised Duny a reward through the old custom known as the Law of Surprise: the rescuer may claim whatever the rescued person already has at home but does not yet know about.
That surprise turned out to be Pavetta herself, born after the promise was made. When the feast turns violent and Pavetta’s own untrained magic nearly tears the hall apart, Geralt protects the couple, the curse is broken and the marriage goes ahead. Duny offers Geralt anything in return, and the witcher, half joking, invokes the same Law of Surprise. The answer arrives at once: Pavetta is already pregnant. The child is Ciri, and from that moment the books treat her and Geralt as bound together by destiny, whether either of them wants it or not.
π§ The Elder Blood: Where Ciri’s Powers Come From
Ciri is not just royalty. She carries the Elder Blood, known in Elder Speech as Hen Ichaer, a rare genetic inheritance that traces back to Lara Dorren aep Shiadhal, an elven sorceress whose forbidden love affair with the human mage Cregennan of Lod ended in tragedy. Their daughter, Riannon, carried the bloodline into human royal families, and generations later it surfaced in Pavetta and, far more powerfully, in Ciri.
The Elder Blood is tied to the prophecy of the elven seeress Ithlinne, which speaks of a child of that lineage and of a coming age of frost and destruction. In practical terms, it gives Ciri the ability to move between worlds and through time, and makes her the most sought-after person on the Continent. Emperors want her for legitimacy, sorcerers want her for her genes, and an entire race of elves from another world wants her for the power in her blood. Almost every major plot thread involving Ciri, in the books and the games, comes back to someone trying to own that power.
π₯ The Fall of Cintra and the Witcher’s Child
Ciri’s early childhood is marked by loss. Pavetta was lost in a shipwreck when Ciri was small, and Duny was believed to have died with her. Calanthe raised her granddaughter, and Geralt first met the girl in the story “Sword of Destiny,” in the dryad forest of Brokilon, where a young Ciri had run off to escape an arranged marriage to Prince Kistrin of Verden. Geralt returned her home without claiming her, convinced he had no business raising a child.
Destiny did not agree. When the Nilfgaardian Empire invaded and Cintra fell, Calanthe, badly wounded, threw herself from the walls of her castle rather than be captured. Ciri was carried out of the burning city by Cahir, a Nilfgaardian knight in a winged helmet who haunted her nightmares for years afterward. After surviving on her own, she was eventually reunited with Geralt, and this time he took her with him.
Geralt brought her to Kaer Morhen, the old witcher keep, where Vesemir and the remaining witchers trained her with the sword, though she never underwent the mutations that create a true witcher. The sorceress Triss Merigold realized that Ciri also had dangerous magical talent, and Yennefer of Vengerberg later took over her magical education at the Temple of Melitele in Ellander. It is during these years that the three form the found family at the emotional heart of the entire saga: Geralt as father, Yennefer as mother, and Ciri as the daughter neither of them expected.
π Thanedd, the Rats and Leo Bonhart
The fragile peace collapses during the coup on the island of Thanedd in Time of Contempt. Fleeing the chaos, Ciri passes through an unstable portal in Tor Lara, the Tower of the Gull, and is thrown into the Korath desert, far from anyone who could protect her. What follows is the darkest stretch of her life. She falls in with a gang of young outlaws called the Rats, takes the name Falka, and becomes romantically involved with one of the gang, Mistle.
That chapter ends in a massacre. The bounty hunter Leo Bonhart slaughters the Rats and takes Ciri prisoner, forcing her to fight for entertainment in an arena. She eventually escapes, badly wounded, and is nursed back to health by the hermit Vysogota of Corvo, to whom she tells much of her story. From there she reaches the Tower of the Swallow, Tor Zireael, at the lake Tarn Mira, and steps through it into another world entirely.
βοΈ The Aen Elle, Stygga Castle and Emhyr’s Secret
The tower leads to the world of the Aen Elle, a powerful elven people closely related to Lara Dorren. Their king, Auberon Muircetach, wants a child from Ciri to restore Lara’s bloodline, and two Aen Elle introduced there, the sage Avallac’h and the warrior Eredin, will matter enormously in The Witcher 3. Ciri refuses to become a breeding project and escapes with the help of the unicorn Ihuarraquax, learning to control her ability to travel between worlds and times along the way.
Her return leads to the climax of The Lady of the Lake at Stygga Castle, the stronghold of the renegade sorcerer Vilgefortz, who wants Ciri’s blood for his own purposes. Geralt and his companions storm the castle, Geralt kills Vilgefortz and Ciri finally kills Bonhart in a duel. Then the biggest twist of the saga arrives: Emhyr var Emreis, Emperor of Nilfgaard, reveals that he is Duny, Ciri’s father. He had planned to marry his own daughter to father the prophesied Elder Blood child, but in the end he abandons the plan and lets her go.
The saga’s final pages are famously ambiguous. Geralt is gravely wounded during a pogrom in Rivia, Yennefer exhausts herself trying to heal him, and Ciri takes them both by boat into the mist toward the Isle of Apples. Sapkowski never states plainly what happens to them, and that open ending is exactly what CD Projekt Red’s games build on.
πΊ Ciri in The Witcher 3: Running From the Wild Hunt
The first two games keep Ciri offstage but lay the groundwork. In The Witcher 2, it is revealed that Geralt once offered himself to the Wild Hunt in exchange for Yennefer’s freedom. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt brings everything together. Emperor Emhyr summons Geralt to Vizima and hires him to find Ciri, who has returned to the Continent with the Wild Hunt on her heels. The Hunt is led by Eredin, now the King of the Wild Hunt, alongside his generals Imlerith and Caranthir, and it wants the power of her Elder Blood. Avallac’h, her enigmatic teacher, had helped her flee them.
Geralt follows her trail across Velen, Novigrad and Skellige, and players get to experience parts of her journey as Ciri herself in playable flashbacks. He finally finds her in a magically induced sleep on the Isle of Mists. Along the way it emerges that Uma, the cursed creature from the Bloody Baron’s keep, is actually Avallac’h, whose curse is lifted at Kaer Morhen through the Trial of the Grasses.

The Witcher 3 lets players control Ciri herself in several flashback sequences, a first taste of what The Witcher 4 builds on.
The Battle of Kaer Morhen is the game’s emotional turning point. The Hunt attacks the keep, and Vesemir, the old witcher who trained both Geralt and Ciri, is killed by Eredin. Ciri’s grief unleashes a devastating burst of power that drives back the attackers. The allies then strike back: Geralt kills Imlerith on Bald Mountain, and Caranthir and Eredin both die in the Battle of Skellige, where the Hunt’s ship Naglfar arrives. With the Hunt broken, one threat remains, the White Frost, the cataclysm foretold in Ithlinne’s prophecy. Ciri goes to face it alone at the elven ruin of Tor Gvalch’ca.
βοΈ The Witcher 3 Endings Explained: Witcher, Empress or Death
Whether Ciri walks out of Tor Gvalch’ca depends on how Geralt has treated her. The game tracks five key moments, and at least three of them must go the “positive” way for Ciri to survive:
- Cheering her up, choosing the snowball fight at Kaer Morhen instead of a drink
- Avallac’h’s lab, letting her vent her anger and smash the place instead of telling her to calm down
- Skjall’s grave, agreeing to go with her to pay her respects
- The Lodge of Sorceresses, trusting her to meet them alone
- Emhyr, skipping the visit or going with her but refusing his payment counts as positive, accepting the money counts as negative
Fail to reach three, and you get the Death ending: Ciri never returns from the White Frost, and a grieving Geralt heads to the Crones’ hut in Velen’s Crookback Bog to face the last of the Crones and recover Ciri’s witcher medallion. Reach three without having taken her to Emhyr, and you get the Witcher ending: Geralt tells the Emperor his daughter died stopping the White Frost, then meets Ciri at the inn in White Orchard and gives her a silver sword as she sets out as a witcher in her own right. With the right conditions in Blood and Wine, she later visits Geralt at his vineyard, Corvo Bianco. The Empress ending requires three positive choices, the visit to Emhyr, and a Nilfgaardian victory in the war, which means both King Radovid and Dijkstra must be dead. In that version, Ciri takes her place as heir to the empire.
π What Happened to Ciri Before The Witcher 4?
CD Projekt Red revealed The Witcher 4 at The Game Awards in December 2024 with Ciri as the protagonist, older and now working as a professional witcher. The cinematic reveal trailer shows her taking a contract in the village of Stromford, where locals have sacrificed young girls to a monster called the Bauk, a creature drawn from Serbian folklore. She wears a medallion shaped like a lynx, a school of witchers never seen in the games before.
Here is the important part for anyone asking which Witcher 3 ending is canon. A working witcher Ciri obviously lines up most naturally with the Witcher ending, but the developers have deliberately avoided declaring a single canonical ending. In interviews around the reveal, franchise and lore designer Cian Maher and game director Sebastian Kalemba said The Witcher 4 would not break existing canon, and Maher pointed out that even the Death ending contains hints suggesting Ciri probably did not die. Reports from the same period also quoted the team saying there is no single canonical ending and that they have found a way to make the story coherent for everyone. Exactly how players’ choices carry over has not been detailed yet, so treat any specific explanation you see online as speculation until CD Projekt Red confirms it.
One popular fan theory points to imagery in the Death ending, including the swallow symbolism tied to Ciri’s Elder Speech name, as proof she survived. That reading is a community interpretation, not something the studio has confirmed. What the studio has said about Ciri’s personality is more grounded. Narrative director Philipp Weber told Xbox Wire, “She’s Geralt’s daughter, so she’s learned a lot of values from him,” while also describing her as a flawed character with darkness and past mistakes in her history.

An older, more experienced Ciri leads The Witcher 4, which begins a brand-new Witcher saga.
ποΈ Kovir and the Start of a New Witcher Saga
The Witcher 4’s Unreal Engine 5 tech demo, shown at the State of Unreal in June 2025 running on a base PlayStation 5 at 60 frames per second, offered the next glimpse of Ciri’s new life. It follows her and her horse Kelpie through the mountains and forests of Kovir, a northern kingdom that the studio confirmed will appear in the video game series for the first time, and into the bustling port town of Valdrest. We covered the technical side in our State of Unreal 2025 breakdown and in our report on why The Witcher 4 moved to Unreal Engine 5.
CD Projekt Red describes The Witcher 4 as the start of a new trilogy. The studio has not announced a release date, and its only official guidance so far is that the game will not launch before 2027. Until then, the best way to catch up on Ciri’s story is the game that set it all up, now available as the free Witcher 3 Remastered upgrade. If you are diving back in, our guide to the best Witcher 3 Remastered settings will help you get the most out of it.

Valdrest, a port town in Kovir, is the first location from Ciri’s new adventure that CD Projekt Red has shown.
β Quick Questions About Ciri’s Lore
Who are Ciri’s parents?
Her mother is Princess Pavetta of Cintra. Her father is Duny, the cursed knight Urcheon of Erlenwald, who is revealed in the books to be Emhyr var Emreis, Emperor of Nilfgaard.
Is Geralt Ciri’s real father?
No. Geralt is her adoptive father, bound to her through the Law of Surprise. The games and the developers still describe her as Geralt’s daughter in every sense that matters.
Is Ciri a real witcher?
She trained at Kaer Morhen but never went through the witcher mutations. Her abilities come from the Elder Blood and her training, and in The Witcher 4 she works as a professional witcher.
Why does the Wild Hunt want Ciri?
Because of her Elder Blood. Her ability to travel between worlds and through time makes her the key to the power the Aen Elle are after.
Which Witcher 3 ending is canon for The Witcher 4?
CD Projekt Red has not named a single canon ending. The studio says the sequel will not break canon, and a witcher Ciri fits the Witcher ending most naturally, but how the other endings are handled has not been explained in detail yet.
Do I need to read the books to understand Ciri?
No, but they add a lot. The Witcher 3 explains what you need to know, while the novels from Blood of Elves to The Lady of the Lake tell her full story in detail.
Final Words
Ciri began as a surprise owed to a witcher, became the most hunted person on the Continent and survived a war, a massacre, an arena, another world and the end of the world itself. Every faction in her life has tried to decide what she should be. The Witcher 4 is the first time she gets to decide for herself, and that is exactly why her story was worth waiting a decade to continue.
