Diablo 5’s Director Explains Why It’s Ditching Diablo 4’s Automatic Monster Scaling

Diablo 5 got its big feature dump in the days after BlizzCon 2026, covering everything from procedurally generated dungeons to new classes (see our full rundown of what Blizzard confirmed). One detail that got less attention at the time is now getting its own answer, in a separate group interview with PC Gamer: how the game will handle monster level scaling, a system that became one of Diablo 4’s most persistent points of player frustration.

Why Diablo 4’s Scaling Frustrated Players

Diablo 4 automatically scales most enemies to a player’s level, a system meant to keep the game challenging deep into its endgame. In practice, it has long been one of the community’s most common complaints, since gearing up and leveling could feel like it accomplished little when tougher enemies simply kept pace. Diablo 5 game director Joe Shely addressed the issue directly, describing how automatic scaling can undercut the feeling of getting stronger that is supposed to be core to Diablo. “We’re going to take a somewhat different approach to that in Diablo 5,” Shely said.

What a Different Approach Could Look Like

Shely did not spell out exactly how the new system will work, and Blizzard has not confirmed specifics beyond his comments. Several outlets have noted the description sounds closer to Diablo 2’s approach, where specific areas carry their own fixed enemy level ranges instead of scaling dynamically to the player, though that comparison is the press’s own reading rather than something Blizzard has confirmed outright. Either way, it fits Diablo 5’s broader move away from Diablo 4’s persistent open world and back toward procedurally generated regions, detailed in the same round of post-BlizzCon interviews. More specifics are expected once Blizzard’s promised regular development updates begin, ahead of the game’s Spring 2029 release.
