Diablo 5: Multiplayer Is Confirmed, Procedural Dungeons Are Back, and Why It Couldn’t Just Be a Diablo 4 Expansion
Diablo V got barely two minutes on stage during BlizzCon 2026’s Opening Ceremony on September 12, just a cinematic teaser and a Spring 2029 release window (you can catch up on that announcement, along with everything else Blizzard revealed that night, in our full recap). In the days since, Blizzard’s developers sat down with press for a string of interviews and filled in nearly everything the ceremony left out. Multiplayer is confirmed, the game is going back to procedurally generated dungeons and overworlds, and the team explained in detail why Diablo 5 simply couldn’t have been another Diablo 4 expansion.
Why Diablo 5 Had to Be Its Own Game
Diablo 5 executive producer Matt Zitterman said the decision started with looking at what Diablo 4 players actually valued and where the game fell short. Some of the fixes the team wanted just did not fit inside an expansion’s scope. “We needed to make some more deeply structural changes to the way the game works,” Zitterman explained. Diablo 4’s own expansion development has now wrapped, with no further expansions planned for that game. The team also wants Diablo himself to finally headline a story, something Zitterman said the studio hopes will stand alongside the storytelling Blizzard built around Lilith and Mephisto.
Multiplayer Is Confirmed, Even if Blizzard Is Staying Quiet on the Details
Senior game director Joe Shely confirmed in a group interview that Diablo 5 will support co-op from the start. “Like Diablo 4, it is a game that you can play solo or multiplayer,” Shely said, adding that players should be able to tackle all of the game’s content with friends. What Blizzard has not said yet is how closely that multiplayer will resemble Diablo 4’s persistent open world, and that ambiguity matters, because Diablo 5 is dropping the open world entirely in favor of procedurally generated regions. More specifics are expected as Blizzard’s promised regular development updates begin next year.

Diablo V is targeting a Spring 2029 release, with development updates planned to begin in 2027.
Procedural Dungeons Return, and Sanctuary Won’t Feel Safe Again
Senior production director Tiffany Wat detailed the biggest structural change under the hood: Diablo 5 is bringing back procedurally generated dungeons and overworld regions, reversing course from Diablo 4’s persistent open world. Revisiting an area will not preserve anything a player previously learned there, no remembered paths, no scouted landmarks, no known tactics for that zone’s elite monsters. “The only thing beyond the fog of war is more questions,” Wat said. That uncertainty is by design, part of a broader push to make Sanctuary feel dangerous again. Traditional hub towns are also gone; players will instead follow a traveling NPC caravan that hands out side quests and travels with a treasure-goblin companion named Zarg. The story picks up roughly a century after Diablo 4, opening seven years into Diablo’s reign over a Sanctuary he has already conquered.
New Classes, Diablo 2-Style Loot, and What’s Next for Diablo 4
Blizzard confirmed the returning Demon Hunter and Monk classes so far, alongside a newly announced Plague Knight, a heavily armored class built around spreading disease effects. The studio says Diablo 5 will ultimately launch with more classes than any previous mainline Diablo game. Loot is shifting back toward Diablo 2-era design as well: items start simple and grow more complex, belts and set items are returning, and multi-slot inventory items are back on the table, though Blizzard stressed all of it is still being tested. On the release date itself, Zitterman said the team feels ready to commit this early. “We’re announcing the date, calling the shot, because we’re very confident,” he said, pointing to a new custom engine built specifically for Diablo 5 that avoids carrying over Diablo 4’s technical debt. For Diablo 4 players, the roadmap ahead still includes the newly launched Season 15, “Season of Hell’s Legacy” (full details on the season’s earlier PTR here), and a javelin-wielding Amazon class due in the first half of 2027, even with no further full expansions planned.
