Half-Life 3 Rumors Erupt Again After a Valve Developer Says ‘HLX’ Out Loud

Half-Life 3 rumors are flaring up again, and this time it is not a dataminer digging through game files. During a public audio conference panel, a Valve developer said the rumored codename “HLX” out loud, on stage, in front of an audience, and a colleague sitting right next to him reacted instantly.

A Valve Sound Designer Lets It Slip at GameSoundCon

The moment happened during a GameSoundCon panel titled “Valve’s Approach to an Open and Flexible Audio Engine.” Valve sound designer Mike Morasky, a veteran who has worked on Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead, Portal 2, Half-Life: Alyx and Counter-Strike 2, was answering a question about managing voice counts when he brought up how Valve’s HDR audio system is used in Deadlock.

“HLX has its own version, and so on and so forth.”

Half-Life: Alyx remains Valve’s most recent entry in the series, and Mike Morasky worked on its sound design.

Co-panelist David Feise, sitting right beside him, turned and quietly said “nice work,” apparently flagging that Morasky had spoken out of turn. At the end of the talk, Feise told him directly that he had only said HLX once this time, a reaction caught on video and quickly spreading across social media.

What Exactly Is HLX?

HLX first surfaced in early 2024 as a data string buried inside a Counter-Strike 2 update, bearing a strong resemblance to “HLVR,” Valve’s known internal codename for Half-Life: Alyx. Nothing came of that discovery at the time, and the term was filed away alongside the long list of other Half-Life 3 teases, leaks and hoaxes that have piled up since the mid 2000s, a saga covered in more depth in Valve’s 30 year history.

Getting excited over the smallest scrap of Half-Life evidence, only to be let down months later, has become something of an annual tradition for the franchise’s fanbase. This time, though, the mention did not come from a leaked build or a datamined string. It came directly from a Valve employee speaking at a public industry event, which is why the clip spread as fast as it did.

Deadlock, Valve’s own multiplayer shooter, was the other project Morasky referenced in the same breath as HLX.

Not the First Near Slip

This was reportedly not the first time Morasky has come close to saying the codename in public. He is said to have nearly let it slip in 2025 as well, catching himself mid word and awkwardly pivoting to “Alyx” instead. Whether HLX turns out to be an internal tool, a reference to Half-Life: Alyx itself, or an actual new entry in the series, nobody outside Valve knows for sure.

What is clear is that Valve has returned to the Half-Life name only once since 2007’s Episode Two, with 2020’s VR exclusive Half-Life: Alyx. Whether HLX represents a true follow up or just another red herring in a franchise famous for them, the mention is already enough to have fans talking again as the end of the year approaches.
