Halo Timeline Explained: Master Chief’s Full Story From the Forerunners to Halo Infinite and Campaign Evolved

Halo: Campaign Evolved rebuilt the Master Chief’s first adventure in Unreal Engine 5 this summer, brought the series to PlayStation for the first time, and Xbox has since confirmed that Activision will develop the next Halo game. That makes this the perfect moment for a full Halo timeline explained guide: from the Precursors and the Forerunners who built the rings, through the Human-Covenant War and every Master Chief game, to Cortana’s fall, the Banished and the Endless in Halo Infinite.

Halo’s story spans hundreds of thousands of years, and a lot of it is told in novels and side games rather than in the main campaigns. We stick to what the games and official Halo material establish, and anything beyond that is clearly marked as speculation.

โš ๏ธ Spoiler Warning โš ๏ธ This article spoils the stories of every mainline Halo game, Halo Wars 1 and 2, and the ending of Halo Infinite.

๐ŸŒŒ The Ancient Past: Precursors, Forerunners and the Flood

Halo’s backstory starts millions of years ago with the Precursors, a godlike intergalactic species that seeded the Milky Way with life. One of the races they shaped, the Forerunners, rose up against their creators and drove them to the edge of extinction. A few Precursors survived by turning themselves into a dust, meant to let them regenerate one day. Over time that dust became defective, and it began to infect and twist living things across the galaxy. The result was the Flood, a parasite that absorbs any sentient host it touches and is tied together by a powerful hive mind.

The Forerunners saw themselves as guardians of all life, a duty they called the Mantle of Responsibility. Ancient humanity, which had its own spacefaring empire at the time, fought the Flood first and also clashed with the Forerunners. After a long war, the Forerunners defeated humanity, stripped it of its technology and reduced it to a primitive state on Earth.

๐Ÿ’ What Is the Halo Array? Why the Rings Were Built

When the Flood threatened to consume everything, the Forerunners built their weapon of last resort: the Halo Array. Each Halo is a colossal ringworld with land, seas and sky on its inner surface, and each one can kill every sentient being within an enormous radius. Halopedia puts the effective range of a ring at 25,000 light-years in every direction, enough for the network to cover the whole galaxy. The idea was brutal but simple: without hosts, the Flood starves.

The rings can be fired remotely from the Ark, a huge Forerunner foundry outside the Milky Way that also served as a refuge for life. After exhausting every other option, the Forerunners activated the Array roughly 100,000 years before the games. The Flood outbreak ended, life was reseeded across the galaxy from the specimens the Forerunners had preserved, and the Forerunners themselves vanished from the galaxy. Seven rings make up the Array as it is known in the modern era.

Two Forerunners matter most for the later games. The Librarian catalogued life to preserve it and quietly guided humanity’s development. Her husband, the warrior Didact, saw humanity as a threat. Halo 4 reveals that he used a device called the Composer to turn his own warriors, and later captured humans, into machine soldiers called Promethean Knights, until the Librarian had him imprisoned.

๐Ÿช– Who Is Master Chief? The Spartans and the Covenant

By the 26th century, humanity has spread to many worlds thanks to faster-than-light slipspace travel, under the Unified Earth Government and its military arm, the United Nations Space Command (UNSC). Conflict with rebellious colonies leads the Office of Naval Intelligence to create the SPARTAN-II program under Dr. Catherine Halsey, a project that abducts children and turns them into augmented supersoldiers.

One of them is John, born in 2511 and taken from the colony Eridanus II as a six-year-old, according to the novel Halo: The Fall of Reach. He becomes Master Chief Petty Officer John-117, the natural leader of the Spartans, protected by his MJOLNIR powered armour.

In 2525, humanity meets the Covenant, a theocratic alliance of alien species ruled by the Prophets, with Elites as their warrior caste and Grunts, Jackals, Hunters and later Brutes in their ranks. They worship the Forerunners as gods, believe that activating the Halos will start a divine “Great Journey”, and declare humanity an affront to their gods. Their holy war begins with the attack on the colony Harvest, and humanity loses world after world.

๐Ÿš€ Halo Wars (2531): The Spirit of Fire

The strategy game Halo Wars takes place about 20 years before the first Halo. The UNSC ship Spirit of Fire, commanded by Captain James Cutter and run with the help of the AI Serina, fights the Covenant on Harvest. Sergeant John Forge and Professor Ellen Anders discover that the Covenant, led by an Arbiter, are hunting Forerunner technology.

The trail leads from a Forerunner star map on Harvest to the colony Arcadia and finally to a hollow Forerunner planet, where the Covenant want to awaken a dormant Forerunner fleet. Forge kills the Arbiter and stays behind to overload the ship’s slipspace reactor, destroying the fleet and the planet. Without its faster-than-light drive, the Spirit of Fire is left drifting with its crew in cryosleep, a story that only continues in Halo Wars 2.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Halo: Reach (2552): The Fall of Humanity’s Fortress

By 2552, nearly all human colonies have fallen. Reach, the UNSC’s main military hub, is next. Halo: Reach follows Noble Team, a Spartan unit made up of Carter, Kat, Jorge, Emile, Jun and the player character, Noble Six. One by one, the team falls while the Covenant overruns the planet.

Beneath Sword Base, Halsey has been studying a Forerunner find that she believes could win the war. She entrusts the AI Cortana, carrying that data, to Noble Team. Noble Six delivers Cortana to Captain Jacob Keyes aboard the Pillar of Autumn and stays behind to cover the ship’s escape. Using the Forerunner data, Cortana guides the Autumn to a mysterious ring, which leads straight into the original game.

Cortana herself was created from a cloned brain of Dr. Halsey, and like all “smart” AIs she has a lifespan of about seven years before she falls into rampancy, a slow and fatal mental breakdown. That detail becomes central to the later games.

๐ŸŸข Halo: Combat Evolved Story Explained: Installation 04

A Warthog drives across the green landscape of the Halo ring in Halo: Campaign Evolved

Installation 04 looks like paradise, but the ring hides a weapon and a parasite.

Halo: Combat Evolved begins as the Pillar of Autumn exits slipspace near a huge ringworld, Installation 04, also known as Alpha Halo. The Covenant attack, Keyes hands Cortana to the Master Chief so the enemy cannot learn the location of Earth, and he crash-lands the ship on the ring.

On the surface, the Chief rescues survivors and frees Keyes from the Covenant cruiser Truth and Reconciliation. The Covenant believe the ring is a sacred weapon. When Cortana enters the ring’s control systems, she discovers something horrifying and sends the Chief after Keyes, who has gone looking for a weapons cache. Instead, the Chief finds the Flood, released from containment.

The ring’s caretaker AI, 343 Guilty Spark, asks the Chief to retrieve the Index and activate Halo’s defences. Cortana stops him at the last moment: firing the ring would kill all sentient life in the galaxy to starve the Flood. Guilty Spark turns hostile, so the Chief and Cortana decide to destroy the ring instead. Keyes has been assimilated by the Flood, so the Chief takes his neural implant, and when Guilty Spark blocks the self-destruct, they destabilise the Autumn’s reactors and escape in a fighter as the ring explodes. A post-credits scene shows that Guilty Spark survived.

๐Ÿ†• What Halo: Campaign Evolved Adds to the Story

Sergeant Avery Johnson stands with UNSC Marines in Halo: Campaign Evolved

Sgt. Johnson fights alongside the Chief in the new prequel arc Operation: METEORITE.

Halo: Campaign Evolved, developed by Halo Studios and released on July 28, 2026 for Xbox Series X|S, PC and PlayStation 5, remakes the original ten missions with new cinematics and re-recorded dialogue. Steve Downes, Jen Taylor and Tim Dadabo return as the Master Chief, Cortana and 343 Guilty Spark, while Keston John takes over as Sgt. Avery Johnson and Keith Silverstein as Captain Keyes.

The big story addition is Operation: METEORITE, a three-mission arc set one year before Combat Evolved. According to Halo Studios, the Master Chief and Sgt. Johnson are sent behind enemy lines on a clandestine UNSC operation aboard a Covenant research vessel, and a simple smash and grab turns into much more. The story was developed with Halo novelist Troy Denning, and the Premium Edition includes his digital short story Halo: Hungry Buzzards, which leads into the operation. The remake also adds enemies from later games, such as Brutes and the new Brute Berserker.

โš”๏ธ Halo 2 Story: The Arbiter and the Great Schism

Halo 2 tells two stories in parallel. On the Covenant side, the Elite commander who failed to stop Halo’s destruction is branded a heretic and tortured by Tartarus, Chieftain of the Brutes. The High Prophets Truth and Mercy spare him and make him the Arbiter, a title given to Elites in times of crisis.

On the human side, the Covenant find Earth. The ship of the Prophet of Regret attacks the African city of New Mombasa, then flees through slipspace. The Chief, Cortana, Johnson and Commander Miranda Keyes, daughter of the late Captain Keyes, follow aboard the In Amber Clad and find a second ring, Installation 05 or Delta Halo. The Chief kills Regret, and the Prophets use his death to replace the Elites with the Brutes as their honour guard.

Deep inside the ring, the Flood’s central intelligence, the Gravemind, brings the Chief and the Arbiter together and reveals that the Great Journey is a lie. The Covenant collapses into civil war, the Flood overruns the holy city of High Charity and consumes Mercy, and Truth escapes towards Earth. The Arbiter and Johnson kill Tartarus as he activates the ring, Miranda Keyes removes the Index, and the unexpected shutdown puts every Halo on standby for remote activation from the Ark. Cortana stays behind on High Charity and is captured by the Gravemind, while the Chief follows Truth to Earth to finish the fight.

Halo 3: ODST plays in parallel to Halo 2’s Earth chapter. A squad of Orbital Drop Shock Troopers, including the Rookie, Buck and the ONI officer Dare, fights through New Mombasa. Helped by the city’s AI, the Superintendent, they escort a Covenant Engineer that wants to defect, and watch the Covenant excavate a massive Forerunner artifact below the city.

๐Ÿ Halo 3 Ending Explained: The Ark and “Wake Me When You Need Me”

In Halo 3, Truth uses that artifact to open a slipspace portal, and humans and Elites follow him through it to the Ark, far beyond the edge of the galaxy. Truth captures Johnson to activate the rings, Miranda Keyes dies trying to save him, and the Gravemind forms a temporary truce with the Chief and the Arbiter. Together they stop the activation, and the Arbiter kills Truth. Then the Gravemind turns on them.

The Ark is building a replacement for the ring the Chief destroyed. The Chief rescues Cortana from High Charity, destroys the city and decides to fire this new, unfinished ring, which can wipe out the Flood on the Ark without harming the galaxy. 343 Guilty Spark refuses to let “his” ring be destroyed and fatally wounds Johnson, and the Chief destroys Guilty Spark and fires the ring. The blast collapses the portal, and only the front half of the frigate Forward Unto Dawn, carrying the Arbiter, makes it back to Earth.

The war is over, and Earth holds a memorial for the fallen, the Chief among them. But he is alive, drifting in the rear half of the ship with Cortana. As he goes into cryosleep, he tells her to wake him when she needs him, one of the most famous lines in the series.

๐Ÿ’™ Halo 4 Story: The Didact, Requiem and Cortana’s Sacrifice

The AI Cortana appears as a blue hologram in Halo: Campaign Evolved

Cortana is the emotional centre of the saga, from the first ring to Zeta Halo.

Halo 4 is set in 2557, four years after Halo 3. Cortana wakes the Chief as the wreck drifts into Requiem, a Forerunner shield world. She is now past her lifespan and suffering from rampancy, so the Chief promises to get her home to Halsey. While trying to shut down what Cortana believes are communications jammers, the Chief accidentally frees the Didact, who takes control of the Prometheans and a new Covenant faction.

The Librarian contacts the Chief, explains the Didact’s past and accelerates the Chief’s evolution to make him immune to the Composer. The Didact still uses the Composer on the Ivanoff Research Station near Installation 03, then on the city of New Phoenix on Earth. Aided by the new UNSC flagship Infinity, the Chief boards the Didact’s ship with a nuclear warhead and defeats him. Cortana saves the Chief at the cost of her own life, or so everyone believes.

๐Ÿค– Halo 5: Guardians: Cortana and the Created

Halo 5 (2558) reveals that Cortana survived by entering the Domain, an ancient Forerunner repository of knowledge that also cured her rampancy. When she contacts the Chief, he and his Spartan-II squad Blue Team (Linda, Kelly and Fred) go AWOL to find her, and the Spartan-IV Fireteam Osiris, led by Jameson Locke, is sent after them.

On the Forerunner world Genesis, Cortana reveals her plan. She and the other AIs, the Created, will use ancient Forerunner war machines called Guardians to force peace on the galaxy through disarmament. The Chief refuses to join her, she imprisons Blue Team, Osiris frees them, and AIs across the galaxy swear allegiance to Cortana while the Infinity retreats.

๐Ÿช Halo Wars 2: Atriox and the Banished

In 2559, the Spirit of Fire finally wakes up, 28 years after Halo Wars, at the Ark itself. Serina has already ended her own existence at the end of her lifespan, and the crew finds a new AI, Isabel, as well as a new enemy: the Banished, a mercenary force of former Covenant races led by the Brute warlord Atriox.

Captain Cutter decides to fight. In the end, Anders takes a newly built Halo ring from the Ark’s foundry and sends it into slipspace to call for UNSC help, staying aboard as it jumps. In the post-credits scene, the ring drops out of slipspace early and is met by one of Cortana’s Guardians.

๐Ÿ›ฐ๏ธ Halo Infinite Story Explained: Zeta Halo and the Endless

Master Chief stands next to the AI known as the Weapon in Halo Infinite

The Weapon was built to trap Cortana, and ends up as the Chief’s new partner.

Halo Infinite opens in late 2559 with the Banished ambushing the Infinity at Zeta Halo, Installation 07. Atriox beats the Chief in a duel and throws him into space. Six months later, a UNSC pilot, later revealed to be Fernando Esparza, finds him adrift. On the badly damaged ring, the Chief recovers the Weapon, an AI designed to imitate Cortana so she could be captured and deleted.

With Atriox apparently dead, the Banished on the ring are led by the old Brute Escharum, who wants the Chief as his last great opponent. They have teamed up with the Harbinger, who says her people, the Endless, were imprisoned on Zeta Halo by the Forerunners and wants to free them by rebuilding a structure called the Silent Auditorium. Along the way, the Weapon sees memories in which Cortana uses the Guardians to devastate Doisac, the Brute homeworld, and realises that she is a copy of Cortana herself.

The final truth arrives in Cortana’s own message. Captured by Atriox, she realised he wanted to use the ring and destroyed herself, damaging Zeta Halo and saving the Weapon from deletion in the process. The Chief defeats Escharum and the Harbinger, the Pilot tells him his name, and the Weapon decides to choose a name of her own. A post-credits scene shows that Atriox is alive, opening a sealed door that leads to the Endless.

๐Ÿ”ฎ Halo Story Theories and What Comes Next (Speculation)

Everything in this section goes beyond what the games confirm.

  • Atriox and the Endless: the Infinite ending sets up Atriox’s alliance with, or control over, the Endless as the next major threat. Whether the next game picks up that thread is not confirmed.
  • The Weapon’s future: many fans expect her to become as central to the series as Cortana once was, possibly with a name reveal in the next game.
  • A new direction under Activision: Xbox has confirmed that Activision will develop the next Halo game with a new, dedicated team, while a small Halo Studios team keeps supporting existing games. Nothing about its story, setting or release date has been announced, as we covered in our report on Xbox handing the next Halo to Activision.

๐ŸŽฎ Halo Games in Chronological Order

If you want to experience the Halo timeline in story order rather than release order, this is the sequence of the main games:

  1. Halo Wars (2531)
  2. Halo: Reach (2552)
  3. Operation: METEORITE in Halo: Campaign Evolved (one year before Combat Evolved)
  4. Halo: Combat Evolved or its remake Halo: Campaign Evolved (2552)
  5. Halo 2 and, in parallel, Halo 3: ODST (2552)
  6. Halo 3 (2552 to 2553)
  7. Halo 4 (2557)
  8. Halo 5: Guardians (2558)
  9. Halo Wars 2 (2559)
  10. Halo Infinite (2559 to 2560)

Newcomers are still best served by starting with Combat Evolved, either in Halo: The Master Chief Collection or in the remake, since Halo: Reach was made later as a prequel and works just as well once you know where its story is heading.

โ“ Quick Questions About the Halo Timeline

What are the Halo rings for?
They are Forerunner superweapons built to kill all sentient life in the galaxy and starve the parasitic Flood. The Covenant wrongly believed they would start a sacred Great Journey.

Who are the Forerunners?
An ancient, highly advanced civilization that defeated ancient humanity, fought the Flood and fired the Halo Array roughly 100,000 years before the games.

Is Cortana dead in Halo Infinite?
Yes. Cortana destroyed herself on Zeta Halo after being captured by Atriox. The Weapon, an AI based on Cortana, carries on at the Chief’s side.

Where does Halo: Reach fit in the timeline?
Reach ends just as the Pillar of Autumn escapes with Cortana, directly leading into Halo: Combat Evolved.

Does Halo: Campaign Evolved change the story?
No. The original ten missions tell the same story with new cinematics, and the three Operation: METEORITE missions add a new prequel chapter set one year earlier.

Final Words

Twenty-five years after the Pillar of Autumn first crashed on Installation 04, the Halo timeline has grown from a single mysterious ring into a saga about ancient sins, a lost civilization and the bond between a soldier and his AI. With Campaign Evolved retelling where it all began and a new team now building the next chapter, there has never been a better time to catch up. Want another sci-fi saga next?
