Warhorse Studios Co-Founder Hopes GTA 6 Will ‘Blaze a Trail’ to Higher Game Prices
Martin Klíma, co-founder of Kingdom Come: Deliverance developer Warhorse Studios, says he’s hoping Grand Theft Auto 6’s $80 price tag will finally give the rest of the industry room to raise prices too. In a new interview, he argued that rising development costs have pushed the business close to a breaking point, and that only a handful of publishers are big enough to make the first move.
Why Klíma Thinks Games Are Too Cheap
Klíma’s argument centers on a gap between what games cost to make and what publishers actually charge for them. He pointed out that production budgets have climbed dramatically since the days of $60 releases, with reports of costs rising roughly 300 percent over that span, while the price of the finished product has barely moved. Studios have mostly tried to cover that gap by throwing more people and money at development, which only drives costs higher and forces games to sell more copies just to break even.
Hoping Rockstar Blazes the Trail
According to Klíma, raising prices is the one lever almost nobody wants to pull first, since the backlash risk falls disproportionately on whichever studio moves alone. He said he believes “GTA will blaze the trail, and it will allow us to increase the cost,” framing a price hike as long overdue and necessary for the business to survive. In his view, Rockstar and Take-Two are among the only companies with enough clout to attempt it first with GTA 6’s $80 standard edition, clearing a path the rest of the industry has been too scared to take on its own.

AI Won’t Cut Costs, But It Might Grow Games
Klíma also addressed the industry’s growing reliance on AI tools during development, but pushed back on the idea that they’re a simple fix for ballooning budgets. He argued AI won’t make games cheaper to build, but could let studios pack more content into the same budget instead of trimming scope just to hit a price point, treating it as a way to grow ambition rather than cut costs.

Where This Leaves GTA 6
Rockstar hasn’t responded to Klíma’s comments, and nothing about GTA 6’s pricing has changed since the game was last in the spotlight. The standard edition is still set at $80, with a $100 Ultimate Edition, when Grand Theft Auto VI launches on November 19 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
