Meet the New James Bond: Isaac Rouse Suits Up as a Schoolboy 007 for Big Finish’s Young Bond: SilverFin

James Bond has been many things over six decades of films, novels, and now audio drama: a Navy commander, a gambler, a seducer, a killer with a license to be one. But before all of that, he was just another boy trying to survive boarding school. Big Finish Productions and Ian Fleming Publications have released the first official photos of Isaac Rouse in costume as the character, taken on location at Eton College, the real-life school Bond himself attended in Ian Fleming’s books.

The photos promote Young Bond: SilverFin, a full-cast audio adaptation of Charlie Higson’s 2005 novel of the same name, the first book in his Young Bond series. Set in the 1930s, SilverFin follows a teenage James Bond as he starts his education at Eton before a trip to Scotland pulls him into a conspiracy involving the sinister Lord Hellebore and the experiments happening on his remote estate. Rouse, known for roles in The Crown and Genius, beat out more than 500 other applicants for the part, alongside Charlotte McBurney as Bond’s ally Wilder Lawless. The cast also includes Tim McInnerny, Miranda Raison, William Hope, and Paterson Joseph, along with Lucy Fleming, Ian Fleming’s own niece, voicing a supporting role.

A School Trip Six Decades in the Making

Getting permission to shoot at Eton wasn’t a given. Producer Lizzie Worsdell called it “one of the highlights of the production,” while writer-director Barnaby Edwards said the photos “encapsulated the essence of Young Bond” and explained why the character grew into “a life of non-conformity.” Producer Robert Valentine was sold on Rouse almost immediately, saying it took “under a minute” during auditions to know they’d found their lead. Costume designer Savannah Blum sourced a period-accurate “lower boy” uniform for the shoot, grounding the photos in the same 1930s setting as Higson’s novel.

Where This Leaves the Rest of the Bond Franchise

SilverFin is made up of 16 half-hour episodes split across two volumes, releasing October 29 digitally and later on collector’s edition CD through Big Finish and the Ian Fleming estate’s own shop. It’s worth stressing that Rouse’s Young Bond exists entirely separately from the character’s next big-screen outing, which Denis Villeneuve is directing. No actor has been officially cast as the adult 007 for that film yet, so for now, the only new face wearing Bond’s name is a teenager in an Eton uniform. It’s just one more sign of how many directions the franchise is being pulled in these days, alongside games like 007 First Light, which is still making its own way to Nintendo Switch 2.
