Nintendo Admits It “Underestimated” Demand for the Zelda 40th Anniversary Switch 2, More Restocks Are Coming
Since pre-orders opened on September 8, the gold, Triforce etched Nintendo Switch 2, The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition has been almost impossible to buy at list price, repeatedly selling out within minutes while resellers list it on eBay for hundreds of dollars over MSRP. Now, a Nintendo executive has confirmed what fans scrambling to check out have suspected for weeks: the company didn’t see this coming.
“It’s a Global Phenomenon”
In a recent interview with the Brazilian YouTube channel Coelho no Japão, spotted by GamesRadar+, Nintendo’s Latin America Vice President and General Manager Bill van Zyll admitted the shortage isn’t limited to one region. According to van Zyll, Nintendo is running into the same supply crunch everywhere it sells the console, and the company is apologizing for how the rollout has played out for fans trying to secure one. He added that North America is one of the markets standing out for just how hard the console has been to find.

Replenishments Are Coming, But Not Fast
Van Zyll confirmed Nintendo is working on getting more consoles and matching accessories onto shelves, though he stopped short of giving any kind of timeline.
“We underestimated how well it would be received.”

Since pre-orders went live, the pattern has repeated across US and European retailers alike: brief restocks that sell out within minutes, immediately followed by resellers listing the console and its matching Pro Controller for several hundred dollars above its $519.99 list price. The console and the Pro Controller with display stand both launch October 29, a week ahead of the Ocarina of Time remake it was announced alongside, and it ships without that game, which has to be bought separately.

For now, van Zyll’s advice to fans still chasing a pre-order is the same one Nintendo has been giving since launch day: keep checking back, and be patient.
