Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 Episode 1 Review: Night City’s Fallen King Opens a Darker, Grittier Season
Night City has a new story to tell, and CD PROJEKT RED did not make anyone wait for Netflix to hear it. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 Episode 1 premiered for free on the official CD PROJEKT RED Twitch channel on October 20 at 12:01 AM CEST, with selected partner streamers co-streaming the episode and viewers unlocking exclusive Edgerunners 2 chat badges. Two more Twitch reruns follow later the same day at 12:00 PM CEST and 9:00 PM CEST, while the full ten-episode season lands on Netflix on October 20 as well.
Studio TRIGGER is back on animation, Kai Ikarashi (who directed Episode 6 of the first season) takes the director’s chair, and showrunner Bartosz Sztybor returns alongside scriptwriter Masahiko Otsuka and lead character designer Ichigo Kanno. As we covered in our Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2 guide, this is a standalone story: David Martinez is gone, and a brand-new crew takes over. Here’s our full breakdown of the premiere across our five categories (2 points maximum each). Light spoilers for Episode 1 ahead.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 Episode 1 Story – 1.5/2
Good Points: A Legend Falls, A Camera Keeps Rolling
The King Breaks Down
The premiere opens on a legend at full speed. A fully chromed edgerunner known on the street as “King” is in the middle of a job when something starts to go wrong, a twitch here, a hesitation there, until cyberpsychosis takes over. TRIGGER stages the breakdown less like an explosion and more like a signal slowly falling apart, which makes it far more unsettling than a simple action set piece. For anyone who watched David Martinez push his chrome too far in 2022, it is a chilling way to say: this is where that road ends.
From King to Weak
When we meet the man again, he is no longer King. His real name is Weak, and the irony of that name is the episode’s cruelest punchline. He survived, but the price of being pulled back from the edge was everything else: his crew, his status and his cyberware. Night City no longer looks at him, and the episode makes it brutally clear that this is a city that only sees you while you are still spectacular.
Roman Has It on Tape
The second thread belongs to Roman Carax, a young cinephile who roams his neighborhood with a camera in a city that has swapped film for braindance. He happens to be filming at the exact moment King comes apart. Weak has lost his own memory of the night that destroyed him, Roman has it recorded, and you can feel the collision coming without the episode having to spell it out.
Where It Falls Short
Episode 1 is almost entirely built out of setup. Four protagonists starting from completely different places means D and Talia only get brief, deliberate introductions, and the corporate conspiracy teased in the marketing barely shows its face yet. It is the right choice for a ten-episode standalone story, but anyone tuning in on Twitch hoping for a self-contained hit like the first season’s opener will find a premiere that asks you to keep watching rather than one that pays off on its own.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 Episode 1 Cast – 2/2
Special Praise: Weak, Roman, and a Clancy Brown-Sized Presence

Night City is as vertical and unforgiving as ever in Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2
A Washed-Up Legend Worth Rooting For
Weak is an instantly compelling lead, a former top-tier edgerunner forced to live without chrome and searching for purpose in a world that has passed him by. Kentaro Tone voices him in Japanese, while the English dub brings in the legendary Clancy Brown, and both versions sell the weight of a man who used to be someone. His shaky, cheap replacement hardware where military-grade chrome used to be says more about the character than any line of dialogue.
The New Crew
Roman (Momoka Terasawa in Japanese, Valeria Rodriguez in English) is the episode’s beating heart, curious and naive in a city that punishes both. D, the Snake Nation netrunner hunting the killer who wiped out his clan (Koki Uchiyama in Japanese, Nazeeh Tarsha in English), gets one of the sharpest small beats in the episode with his mix of contempt and curiosity toward Roman’s obsession with cinema. Talia (Akari Kito in Japanese), raised in corpo towers but hardened in Maelstrom’s grip, is all chrome and provocation on the surface, with just enough of a flicker underneath to make you want more.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 Episode 1 World – 2/2
Good Points: The Same City on Different Film Stock

A new crew takes over the streets of Night City in Edgerunners 2
A Grittier Night City
The world of Cyberpunk 2077 has never looked quite like this. Ikarashi and TRIGGER lean into a 90s anime flavor with heavier lines, grainier lighting and a rougher way of moving bodies, and the result feels like the same city shot on different film stock. The neon DNA is still there, but the violence is uglier and less choreographed, perfectly matching a story about the people Night City has already used up.
Braindance vs. Film
The worldbuilding details are smart. In a city where braindance lets you passively live inside someone else’s memories, Roman’s old-fashioned camera turns simply looking at something into an almost radical act. Snake Nation nomads, Maelstrom and corpo towers all get a foothold within one episode, giving the setting real texture for both game fans and newcomers.
Music Score and Effects – 1.5/2
Swapping Franz Ferdinand’s “This Fffire” for The Cure’s 1978 post-punk track “10:15 Saturday Night” as the opening theme is a bold, moody choice that fits the darker, slower tone of this season, and the minimalist opening title sequence is once again one you will not want to skip. Petite Meller’s “Watson” closes things out as the ending theme. The episode’s best audiovisual moment comes at the very end: the signal drops and the Cyberpunk logo bounces around a dead screen like an old DVD screensaver, a gag that doubles as the season’s thesis.
The animation itself is spectacular whenever the action kicks in, and King’s cyberpsychosis sequence is a technical highlight. Where it loses half a point: the first season’s soundtrack became iconic largely through its standout needle drops across the whole run, and the premiere does not yet have a moment that sticks in your head the way “I Really Want to Stay at Your House” did. That may change over ten episodes, but on Episode 1 alone, the score plays it more restrained.
Originality – 1.5/2
How It Stands Apart
Building a Cyberpunk story around a character who loves film, and opening with the aftermath of a legend’s fall instead of a rise, is a genuinely fresh angle for the franchise. CD PROJEKT RED has compared the shift to moving from a Michael Bay movie to a Martin Scorsese one, and the premiere backs that up with slower pacing and an emotional register closer to a crime drama than a shonen tragedy.
Where It Loses Ground
Cyberpsychosis, chrome addiction and a revenge-driven netrunner are still very familiar Cyberpunk building blocks, and the story’s core fear, the price of chasing glory in Night City, is the same one the first season explored. The framing is new, the foundation is not, which is why Originality lands at 1.5 rather than full marks.
What’s Next for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2?
Only Episode 1 streamed free on Twitch. Episodes 2 to 10 are exclusive to Netflix, where the complete season drops at once on October 20, so there is no weekly wait. The official synopsis promises that D’s path to revenge will lead him close to corpo secrets never meant to be found, and the wider cast already revealed on the official site points to where things are heading: Avida, a former jazz singer, corpo insider and Weak’s old flame who is now married to Kang Tao executive Kiril and the mother of Talia, plus Arasaka and Kang Tao corpos, the team at Sal Bigelow’s Braindance Paradise and the members of King’s old crew. Hideo Kojima is also set to reprise his Cyberpunk 2077 role as Hideyoshi Oshima during the season.
Beyond the anime, Night City keeps expanding. Paramount is developing a live-action film, which we broke down in our Cyberpunk 2077 movie coverage, and Edgerunners already crossed over into Overwatch as part of the Blizzard and CD PROJEKT RED partnership. If you missed the Twitch premiere, keep an eye on the later reruns on the CD PROJEKT RED channel for your last chance to grab the chat badges.
Gamersuniverse Score:
8.5 out of 10 stars⭐
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 Episode 1 is a confident, darker and more grounded return to Night City. Weak’s fall from King is a brutal opener, Roman’s camera gives the season a fresh thematic hook, and TRIGGER’s grittier 90s-inspired look makes the city feel new again. It loses points for a premiere that is almost pure setup and a soundtrack that has not yet delivered a signature moment, but as a statement of intent, this is exactly what a standalone sequel to the Anime of the Year should be.
