Professor Layton Timeline Explained: Every Game in Chronological Order Before The New World of Steam

Professor Layton is finally coming back. Level-5’s Professor Layton and the New World of Steam launches on December 10, 2026 for Switch 2, Switch, PS5 and PC, the first new adventure for the top-hatted gentleman in more than a decade. Because the series jumped back and forth in time from the very start, many players are unsure where to begin and how the games connect. This guide has the full Professor Layton timeline explained: every game in chronological order, the story of each adventure, the secret of Layton’s past, and exactly where The New World of Steam fits in.

We stick to what the games and Level-5 itself establish. Where the series never gave an official answer, we say so.

โš ๏ธ Spoiler Warning โš ๏ธ This article spoils the stories of all six main Professor Layton games, including the big twists of Unwound Future and Azran Legacy. If you plan to play them first, bookmark it for later.

๐Ÿ“œ Professor Layton Games in Chronological Order

The release order and the story order are not the same. Level-5 released the original trilogy first and then went back in time with a prequel trilogy. In chronological story order, the series looks like this:

  1. Professor Layton and the Last Specter (Spectre’s Call in Europe), the earliest story, set three years before Curious Village
  2. Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva, the 2009 animated film
  3. Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask
  4. Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy, one year after Miracle Mask
  5. Professor Layton and the Curious Village
  6. Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box (Pandora’s Box in Europe)
  7. Professor Layton and the Unwound Future (Lost Future in Europe)
  8. Professor Layton and the New World of Steam, one year after Unwound Future
  9. Layton Brothers: Mystery Room and Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy, many years later, starring Layton’s son and daughter

The crossover Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney is the odd one out. Luke is still at Layton’s side, but no official slot in the timeline has been confirmed, so it is best treated as a standalone side story.

๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ Before the Games: Who Is Professor Layton Really?

The biggest secret of the series is Layton’s own past, and it is only fully revealed in Azran Legacy. Layton was born Theodore Bronev, the younger son of the archaeologists Leon and Rachel Bronev. When he was very young, a shadowy organisation called Targent kidnapped his parents for their knowledge of the ancient Azran civilisation and left the two brothers alone.

An elderly couple, Roland and Lucille Layton, came to adopt a boy named Hershel. Theodore’s older brother, whose name was Hershel, gave his name to his little brother so that he would be adopted in his place. From then on, Theodore grew up as Hershel Layton. The older brother would later become the masked villain Jean Descole.

Two more tragedies shaped the gentleman we know. Eighteen years before Miracle Mask, teenage Layton explored the Akbadain ruins with his best friend Randall Ascot, who fell into a trap and was presumed dead. Years later at university, Layton fell in love with Claire. She gave him his iconic top hat just before he became a professor of archaeology at Gressenheller, and shortly afterwards she was killed in an accident involving a time machine, ten years before Unwound Future. These losses are the root of Layton’s drive to be a true gentleman.

๐Ÿ‘ป Last Specter: How Layton Met Luke

The chronological first chapter begins on the day Emmy Altava is hired as Layton’s new assistant. Layton has received a letter in the name of his old friend Clark Triton, mayor of the foggy canal town of Misthallery, where a giant Specter rises from the mist at night and destroys houses. In Misthallery they discover that the letter was really written by Clark’s young son, Luke, who has learned to predict the Specter’s attacks.

The trail leads to the legendary Specter’s Flute, to Luke’s old friend Arianna Barde and to Loosha, a gentle prehistoric creature living in the lake. The Specter turns out to be an excavation machine. Police Chief Jakes, who wanted to become mayor, was involved, and the mastermind is Jean Descole, who had disguised himself as the Tritons’ butler while searching for the Golden Garden, ancient Azran ruins hidden beneath the town. After Descole’s machines are defeated, the mortally wounded Loosha breaks the dam, the lake drains and the Golden Garden is revealed. The discovery makes Layton famous, and Luke asks to become his apprentice. Their partnership begins here.

๐ŸŽญ Eternal Diva: The Film Between the Games

The animated film Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva, released in Japan on December 19, 2009, fits between Last Specter and Miracle Mask. Layton’s former student Janice Quatlane invites him to her opera at the Crown Petone, which tells the story of the lost kingdom of Ambrosia and its secret of eternal life. The opera house turns out to be a ship, the audience is drawn into a deadly puzzle contest, and the composer Oswald Whistler is revealed to be trying to keep his late daughter Melina alive by implanting her memories in other girls.

Once again, Descole pulls the strings. He wants to raise Ambrosia, the next of the Azran sites, and turns Whistler’s one-man orchestra machine into the giant Detragiganto. Layton finds the missing melody, Ambrosia rises from the sea, and Descole is foiled. Emmy also plays a part in the film.

๐ŸŽญ Miracle Mask: Layton’s Lost Best Friend

In Miracle Mask, Layton, Luke and Emmy travel to the glittering desert city of Monte d’Or at the request of Layton’s old friend Angela Ledore. A figure called the Masked Gentleman is performing “miracles” with the Azran Mask of Chaos, turning people to stone and into horses. Flashbacks show teenage Layton’s expedition with Randall, and Randall’s fall in the Akbadain ruins.

The Masked Gentleman is Randall himself. He survived the fall with amnesia, regained his memories through anonymous letters and came to believe that Layton and Angela’s husband Henry Ledore had betrayed him. Layton unites the Mask of Chaos with the Mask of Order, opens the hidden Azran vault and saves the city. Descole, who had manipulated Randall and even disguised himself as Angela, flees, and Randall reconciles with his friends. In the final scene, Leon Bronev and Targent attack Descole and seize the vault for themselves, setting up the finale of the prequel trilogy.

๐Ÿฅš Azran Legacy Explained: Descole, Bronev and the Truth About Layton

One year later, the archaeologist Desmond Sycamore invites Layton’s team aboard his airship, the Bostonius, flown by his butler Raymond. In the frozen town of Froenborg they free Aurora, a “living mummy” girl trapped in ice, who reveals that five Azran eggs scattered across the world will unlock the Azran Legacy. A worldwide race against Targent follows.

Then the twists arrive one after another. Sycamore reveals himself as Jean Descole and steals the key. Emmy is exposed as having worked as a spy for Bronev. Descole then tells Layton the truth: he is Layton’s older brother, and Bronev is their father, who first worked for Targent under pressure and later took control of it. Descole’s whole crusade was revenge on Targent for destroying their family.

Inside the ruins, the Azran secret is revealed. The ancient civilisation created golems to serve them, but the golems developed a will of their own, rebelled and destroyed the Azran. Bronev’s actions awaken the golem army, and only the self-sacrifice of Layton, Luke, Emmy, Descole and Bronev convinces the ruins to spare humanity. Aurora stays behind as the ruins collapse. Inspector Grosky arrests Bronev, who tells Layton his real name is Theodore Bronev. Layton keeps the name Hershel Layton, but hopes to meet Bronev again one day as a fellow archaeologist. Emmy leaves to find her own path, and the game ends with Layton and Luke driving toward a village called St. Mystere, leading straight into the first game.

Azran Legacy was presented by Akihiro Hino in a Nintendo Direct on August 29, 2012 as the conclusion of the prequel trilogy and, at the time, as Layton’s final adventure as the lead.

๐ŸŽ Curious Village: The Golden Apple of St. Mystere

The game that started it all. Layton and Luke are invited by Lady Dahlia, widow of Baron Augustus Reinhold, to the village of St. Mystere. The Baron’s will promises his fortune to whoever finds the Golden Apple. Strange things keep happening: a murdered man who reappears, a kidnapped servant who returns as if nothing happened, and a mysterious tower nobody may enter. An “Inspector Chelmey” on the case turns out to be Don Paolo, a mad scientist and master of disguise who calls himself Layton’s archenemy.

The solution is one of gaming’s best twists. Every resident of St. Mystere is a robot, built by the Baron and his engineer Bruno to test anyone searching for the Golden Apple. And the Golden Apple is not an object at all, but the Baron’s daughter, Flora Reinhold, hidden at the top of the tower. The Baron’s treasure is real too, but taking it would shut down the robots. Flora leaves it behind and moves to London with Layton.

๐Ÿ“ฆ Diabolical Box: The Curse of Folsense

Layton’s old mentor Dr. Schrader is found seemingly dead, and the Elysian Box, said to kill anyone who opens it, has vanished. The only clue is a ticket for the luxury train Molentary Express. Layton, Luke and a stowaway Flora travel via the town of Dropstone to Folsense, a lively town that seems frozen in time and ruled from its castle by the supposed vampire Anton. Don Paolo stole the box and even disguised himself as Flora along the way.

The “curse” has a scientific explanation. Fifty years earlier, a gas from the town’s mine began causing hallucinations, and the gas in the box knocked out those who believed the legend. When the castle collapses into the mine and the gas disperses, Folsense is revealed as a ruined ghost town and Anton as an old man. The box held a love letter from Anton to his lost fiancรฉe Sophia, and her answer is still inside. Anton meets his granddaughter Katia, and back in London Layton learns that Schrader was only in a coma and has recovered.

โณ Unwound Future Ending Explained: Claire, Clive and Future London

The finale of the original trilogy is also the emotional heart of the whole Professor Layton timeline. A time machine demonstration by Dr. Alain Stahngun goes wrong, and he and Prime Minister Bill Hawks vanish. A week later, Layton receives a letter from Luke, written ten years in the future. A clock shop sends the pair into a gloomy Future London, where an older “Future Luke” tells them that Layton has become the head of a crime syndicate called the Family.

None of it is what it seems. Future London is a replica built in a giant cavern beneath the city, created to trick kidnapped scientists into building a working time machine. Stahngun is really Dimitri Allen, Claire’s former colleague, who wants to travel back and save her. The true mastermind is “Future Luke”, really a young man named Clive, whose parents died in the same explosion that killed Claire and who wants revenge on London. Don Paolo, who turns out to have loved Claire as well, helps Layton stop Clive’s flying fortress.

The final reveal breaks hearts: Celeste, the woman who helped them, is Claire herself. The accident threw her ten years into the future, but her existence there is unstable and she must return to the moment of her death. After a last farewell, she disappears, and Layton lowers his hat in the falling snow. In the closing scenes, Luke moves overseas with his family, and some time later Layton receives a letter from his former apprentice inviting him to another puzzling case.

๐Ÿš‚ Where Does The New World of Steam Fit in the Timeline?

Right after that. Level-5’s official story sets Professor Layton and the New World of Steam one year after Unwound Future, which makes it a direct sequel to the original trilogy. Luke now lives in America for family reasons and has earned the nickname “Great Detective Luke” by solving everyday mysteries. Layton travels across the Atlantic to Steam Bison, an American town that has grown at breakneck speed thanks to revolutionary steam technology, and a mysterious incident there reunites the two.

Layton and Luke reunited in Steam Bison, one year after Unwound Future.

The official character list introduces a new cast:

  • Elinora Allinston, the younger twin of the wealthy Allinston family, a gentle inventor and skilled mechanic
  • Elida Allinston, her elder twin sister, an aspiring stage actress
  • Eggmuffin Sonder, the town’s leading inventor behind much of Steam Bison’s growth
  • Bolt Allinston, the richest man in town, effectively its mayor and chairman of the Gilded Council
  • Sheriff Bobsley, a hot-headed lawman on a steam bike
  • Falcon, an eagle who hates being mistaken for a vulture and collects treasures
  • Mystella, a fortune-teller who keeps track of unsolved puzzles, a job Granny Riddleton handled in earlier games

Trailers also show a ghostly gunslinger referred to as Gunman King Joe, who appears to be the game’s antagonist. Who he really is remains a mystery until launch, so any theory about him is pure speculation for now. Yo Oizumi and Mio Imada return as the Japanese voices of Layton and Luke, the puzzles come from QuizKnock, and the theme song “The New World” pairs Joe Hisaishi’s music with lyrics and vocals by Lilas of YOASOBI.

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ง The Next Generation: Alfendi and Katrielle Layton

The furthest point of the Professor Layton timeline lies many years later. In the mobile spin-off Layton Brothers: Mystery Room, the Professor’s son Alfendi Layton solves cases at Scotland Yard with rookie detective Lucy Baker.

In Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy, the Professor’s daughter Katrielle Layton opens the Layton Detective Agency in London with her assistant Ernest Greeves and a talking dog she names Sherl, whose speech only they can understand. The Professor himself has disappeared, and finding him is Katrielle’s personal mission. Her cases revolve around the “Seven Dragons”, London’s most powerful tycoons, and the finale reveals that the mysterious Lord Adamas is Ernest, really Miles Richmond, seeking revenge for his family. The games have not yet explained why the Professor vanished, and New World of Steam is set long before that point.

โš–๏ธ Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright

The 2012 crossover with Capcom sends Layton, Luke, Phoenix Wright and Maya Fey to Labyrinthia, a medieval town ruled by the Storyteller, whose written words become reality and where witches are put on trial. It is a fan favourite, but there is no official placement in the timeline. If you want more courtroom drama, check out our news on Capcom’s Ace Attorney Dual Destinies VR remake.

๐ŸŽฎ Which Order Should You Play the Professor Layton Games In?

For newcomers, release order is still the best way to play. The prequel trilogy assumes you know the original characters, and Unwound Future’s ending hits harder after the first two games. If you only want to be ready for New World of Steam, the original trilogy (Curious Village, Diabolical Box, Unwound Future) is the most important, since the new game continues directly from it. The original three games are also available as mobile ports, which makes them the easiest way to catch up today.
