Nintendo Direct September 2026: Two Shows Confirmed, Including a Zelda 40th Anniversary Special
Nintendo is doubling up next week. The company has confirmed not one but two Nintendo Direct broadcasts, back to back, with the first one dedicated entirely to The Legend of Zelda’s 40th anniversary. It’s the biggest concentration of Nintendo news we’ve had since the Switch 2 launch window, and there’s a lot riding on what gets shown, from a certain long, awaited remake to whatever Nintendo has been sitting on for its broader 2026 lineup.
When and How to Watch Both Directs
The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct airs first, on Tuesday, September 8, running for approximately 30 minutes. The regular Nintendo Direct follows just a day later, on Wednesday, September 9, running for around 45 minutes and immediately followed by a Nintendo Treehouse: Live segment showing extended gameplay of select titles for roughly 110 minutes. Both main presentations start at the same time:
- 7 AM PT / 10 AM ET (North America)
- 3 PM BST (UK)
- 4 PM CEST (Central Europe)
- 11 PM JST (Japan, effectively the night of the same day)
Both shows will stream for free on Nintendo’s official YouTube channels, with regional variants for different countries, as well as through the Nintendo Today! smart device app, where available. No pass, account link, or purchase is required to watch either broadcast or the Treehouse segment that follows.
The Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct: What Nintendo Has Actually Confirmed
Nintendo’s own description for the September 8 show is intentionally vague, promising only “a variety of information related to The Legend of Zelda” as part of the franchise’s 40th anniversary celebration. That’s it. No confirmed games, no confirmed segments, just a dedicated half hour for one of Nintendo’s flagship series.

That silence hasn’t stopped speculation, though. The Ocarina of Time remake for Switch 2, announced back in June with barely a follow up since, is the obvious frontrunner for a fresh look during a Zelda-only show. There’s also talk of a first trailer for the live action Zelda movie, which already has an April 30, 2027 release date locked in, making a teaser a plausible fit for an anniversary broadcast. None of this is confirmed by Nintendo, so treat it as informed guesswork rather than a preview of what’s actually coming.
The Regular Nintendo Direct: A Broader, Busier Show
The September 9 Nintendo Direct is the more traditional format: a wider mix of first party and third party software across Switch and Switch 2, running roughly 15 minutes longer than the Zelda special. Nintendo’s own promotional text for the show is limited to pointing viewers toward the Treehouse segment afterward, where select titles featured in the Direct get extended gameplay demonstrations.
Coming off a comparatively quiet 2026 release schedule, especially next to 2025’s Switch 2 launch window, there’s an expectation that Nintendo has been holding announcements back for this exact slot. Fans have floated a handful of possibilities, from a fresh Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave launch trailer (that game already has its own September 17 release date locked in, so this would just be a victory lap rather than a reveal) to renewed Wind Waker HD rumors, but outside of Fortune’s Weave’s known release plans, none of it carries an official stamp yet.
Why Two Directs in Two Days
Splitting a Zelda specific show from the general Direct lets Nintendo give the 40th anniversary its own spotlight without it getting buried under unrelated announcements, while still keeping the broader Direct format intact for everything else. It’s a similar playbook to past franchise anniversary specials, just compressed into back to back days instead of being spread weeks apart.
