Samuel L. Jackson Confirms Nick Fury Will Skip Avengers: Doomsday, Return for Avengers: Secret Wars

Nick Fury isn’t among the 33 characters Marvel Studios has officially confirmed for Avengers: Doomsday, and Samuel L. Jackson has now explained why himself. Speaking to The Direct in an exclusive interview on the red carpet for his new film The Beast, Jackson confirmed Fury is sitting out Doomsday entirely and will instead return in Avengers: Secret Wars, now set for December 17, 2027.

What Jackson Actually Said

When The Direct’s interviewer noted they hadn’t seen Jackson as Fury in a while, he didn’t leave much room for doubt about which Avengers film he’s skipping. Asked what he could tease about Secret Wars, Jackson said Marvel has told him only, “You’re not gonna be in this movie. You’ll be in the next.” He added that he has no idea what Fury’s role in Secret Wars actually is, since Marvel hasn’t shared the script with him beyond that.

Why Fury Isn’t in Doomsday

Fury’s absence lines up with Marvel’s own cast reveal for Doomsday, which ran through all 33 confirmed characters without Jackson’s name attached, part of the returning ensemble Gamersuniverse mapped out in its MCU watch order ahead of the film’s December 18 release. Jackson’s comments also close the book on an earlier, unconfirmed report that had suggested Fury would show up in Doomsday after all. Fury hasn’t appeared on screen since 2023’s The Marvels, making Secret Wars his first MCU appearance in four years.

Fury was last seen on screen in 2023’s The Marvels, before Avengers: Doomsday’s full cast was confirmed without him.

Where This Leaves Secret Wars

Secret Wars, directed by the Russo brothers, is expected to begin filming later this year ahead of its December 2027 release. The project recently landed its first new casting beyond the Doomsday ensemble, with A Quiet Place and Hamnet actor Noah Jupe joining in an undisclosed role. With Fury confirmed for the lineup, his return would mark one of the longest-running MCU characters picking back up a thread that’s stretched all the way back to Iron Man’s first post-credits scene in 2008.
