The Outlast Trials Shatters Its Own Steam Record With Over 119,000 Concurrent Players

The Outlast Trials just posted the best week of its three-year life. Red Barrels’ co-op survival horror game hit an all-time high of 119,526 concurrent players on Steam on October 7, according to SteamDB, more than tripling the peak it saw at its full launch back in 2024. The surge lines up with a massive Steam Autumn Sale discount that has pushed the base game down to its lowest price since release.

A Launch Peak, More Than Tripled Three Years Later

When The Outlast Trials left early access and fully launched on March 5, 2024, its biggest single-day crowd topped out at 36,689 concurrent players on Steam. That number held up as the game’s high-water mark for over two and a half years, across PC, PS5, PS4, and Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, and more than a dozen seasonal content updates. Figures from this month’s sale already showed the game climbing past 94,500 concurrent players on October 5, and the count kept rising through the weekend before landing at the new all-time peak of 119,526 on October 7.

What’s Driving the Spike

The timing points squarely at Steam’s Autumn Sale, which has knocked the base game down by 90 percent, its deepest discount since launch. The original Outlast and Outlast 2 are also discounted by 75 percent for the same period, giving newcomers a cheap way to catch up on the series before jumping into the multiplayer spin-off. Red Barrels hasn’t commented publicly on the record itself, but the numbers fit a pattern that keeps showing up on Steam: a steep, well-timed discount on an already well-reviewed live-service game, and The Outlast Trials sits at roughly 92 percent positive across about 93,000 reviews, can pull in a bigger crowd than most marketing pushes ever could.

A Game Still Being Fed Content

Part of what’s kept The Outlast Trials relevant three years after launch is Red Barrels’ steady stream of post-launch seasons. Update 1.64, subtitled Chemical Leak, shipped on September 8 and added a limited-time toxic-gas event along with new MK challenges, and it’s still running while the sale pulls in new and returning players alike. Whether the record holds once the discount ends this week remains to be seen, but for now, a three-year-old horror game is outselling several of this month’s brand-new releases on Steam’s top charts.
