Wild Arms Successor Armed Fantasia Cancelled by Publisher Despite Successful Kickstarter

Digital Bros, the Italian parent company of publisher 505 Games, has confirmed that Armed Fantasia, the crowdfunded spiritual successor to the classic Wild Arms series, has been discontinued after four years in development. The news wasn’t announced with a press release or a message to backers. It surfaced instead inside the company’s latest financial filing, alongside the cancellation of two other unreleased games.

A Cancellation Buried in a Financial Report

The discontinuation was disclosed in Digital Bros’ draft financial statements for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2026, filed on September 24. The company said it had decided to discontinue Armed Fantasia, the action RPG Directorate: Novitiate, and an unnamed sequel to its free-to-play game Battle Island, following a review of each project’s market potential and the additional investment still needed to finish them. Digital Bros pointed to repeated setbacks in development, saying the games had gone through multiple attempts to revise their gameplay.

A Kickstarter Success Story Undone

Armed Fantasia was developed by Wild Bunch Productions, a studio founded by former Wild Arms developers led by producer Akifumi Kaneko. The game was revealed in 2022 as part of a joint Kickstarter alongside Penny Blood, a separate spiritual successor to Shadow Hearts from another studio, Studio Wildrose. The campaign asked for 100 million yen and ended up raising 379,328,385 yen from 17,920 backers, nearly 3.8 times its goal. Set in a Westernpunk world called Londenium, Armed Fantasia would have had players controlling adventurers known as Pathfinders, each equipped with a signature Gadget, fighting through turn-based battles and exploring by land, sea, and air.

Passed Over by Sony, Then Left Waiting

Even before the Kickstarter, Kaneko had revealed that the team pitched Armed Fantasia to Sony more than once, but the platform holder wasn’t interested in publishing it, which is how 505 Games ended up taking on the project instead. Development kept moving in the years since, and by a March 2026 update the team had finished a vertical slice covering the game’s main scenario and core systems for the publisher to review. Kaneko noted around the same time that updates to backers had become less frequent, something he linked to how much information the publisher allowed the studio to share. The game had been planned for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

A Costly Writedown and Two More Cancelled Games

Alongside the cancellations, Digital Bros recorded a non-cash asset impairment of 18.7 million euros, made up of 17.6 million euros in write-offs tied directly to the discontinued games and another 1 million euros in impairment losses on other titles. Directorate: Novitiate, developed by Nesting Games, had been announced for Steam Early Access, while the Battle Island sequel would have followed up the decade-old free-to-play World War II game.

What Happens to Backers Now

Neither Digital Bros nor Wild Bunch Productions has said anything publicly about refunds or compensation for the thousands of people who backed the project in 2022. The fate of sister project Penny Blood also remains unclear, though its troubles largely predate this announcement since developer Studio Wildrose reported running out of funding back in 2023 and isn’t published by Digital Bros at all. For now, Armed Fantasia joins a growing list of crowdfunded RPG revivals that raised the money but never made it to a store shelf.
