Black Clover Anime Returns to TV Tokyo After a Five-Year Hiatus With Its Season 2 Premiere
Black Clover fans had a long wait, but it’s finally over. The anime adaptation of Yuki Tabata’s manga returned to Japanese television on October 3, 2026, picking up almost exactly where it left off back in March 2021, when episode 170 closed out the original run. Season 2 is now streaming internationally on Crunchyroll, with new episodes arriving weekly as the story moves into the Spade Kingdom Raid arc.
A Five-Year Wait Finally Over
The original Black Clover anime ran for 170 episodes before going on hiatus in 2021, leaving Asta, Yuno, and the rest of the Clover Kingdom’s Magic Knights in the middle of their invasion of the Spade Kingdom. That’s almost five and a half years off the air, long enough that more than one headline greeting the comeback simply read some version of “Black Clover is finally back.” Season 2 picks the story straight back up at that cliffhanger rather than rebooting or skipping ahead.

Black Clover Season 2 kicks off with a new opening theme from the band WANIMA.
Same Studio, Same Director, New Episodes
Studio Pierrot is back animating the new season, with Ayataka Tanemura returning to direct after helming the back half of the original run and the 2023 film Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King. Keiichiro Ochi returns on series composition, Itsuko Takeda on character design, and Minako Seki on music, keeping the creative team essentially intact after the long gap. The season’s opening theme, “Kienai Riyuu” (The Reason That Won’t Disappear), comes from the rock band WANIMA.
What Comes Next for the Magic Knights
Episode 2 is already locked in for October 10, keeping Black Clover on a weekly Saturday schedule on TV Tokyo and its affiliate stations, with Crunchyroll following close behind for international viewers. With the Spade Kingdom Raid arc now properly underway, the season has plenty of manga material to draw from before it needs to catch back up to Tabata’s finished story.
