GTA 6’s Jason and Zelda’s Link Face Off in an SNL Weekend Update Sketch
Saturday Night Live spent part of its October 3 Weekend Update segment letting two of November’s biggest game launches duke it out. Cast members Marcello Hernández and Mikey Day played Grand Theft Auto VI’s Jason Duval and The Legend of Zelda’s Link, trading jabs at the Weekend Update desk over which game actually deserves players’ attention once the holidays roll around, with Dakota Johnson hosting and Colin Jost and Michael Che running the segment.
“Too Many Puzzles, No Guns”
Hernández’s Jason leaned hard into Grand Theft Auto VI’s reputation for mayhem, waving around a toy rocket launcher while pitching chaos over puzzles and dismissing the Ocarina of Time remake as “Too Many Puzzles, No Guns.” Day’s Link fired back in defense of Hyrule, brandishing fairy bottles and magic frog props and getting progressively louder as the bit went on, breaking character often enough to crack up his fellow cast members along the way.
Link’s Switch 2 remake of Ocarina of Time played the other side of SNL’s comedic showdown.
Two Novembers, One Spotlight
The sketch’s premise lines up with the actual release calendar. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time launches on Switch 2 on November 5, followed two weeks later by Grand Theft Auto VI on November 19, a window other publishers have largely steered clear of. It’s also just the latest sign of how far GTA 6’s marketing reach has spread beyond gaming circles, following a Miami Heat game getting a Vice City makeover and renewed chatter over what its price tag could mean for the rest of the industry. Whether or not Jason or Link actually “won” the bit, a mainstream late-night show building an entire segment around two game launches says plenty about where both stand heading into the holidays.
