Blood Ravens Lore Explained: The Full Dawn of War Story From Tartarus to Kronus Before Dawn of War IV

The Blood Ravens are heading back to Kronus. KING Art Games and Deep Silver’s Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War IV launches on PC via Steam on December 3, 2026, and once again it puts the most mysterious Space Marine Chapter in Warhammer 40,000 at the centre of the story. If you never played the earlier games, or simply forgot who Gabriel Angelos, Azariah Kyras or Cyrus are, this guide is for you. Here is the Blood Ravens lore explained in full: who the Chapter is, what happened in every Dawn of War campaign from Tartarus to Acheron, and what we know about the story of Dawn of War IV.

We stick to what the games and official sources from Games Workshop, Relic Entertainment, KING Art and Deep Silver establish. Fan theories, like the famous question of where the Blood Ravens really come from, are clearly marked as speculation.

โš ๏ธ Spoiler Warning โš ๏ธ This article spoils the campaigns of Dawn of War, Dark Crusade, Soulstorm, Dawn of War II, Chaos Rising, Retribution and Dawn of War III. Dawn of War IV is only covered through its official premise.

๐Ÿฆ… Quick Facts: The Blood Ravens in a Nutshell

  • Who they are, a Space Marine Chapter of the Imperium of Man, famous for its unusually high number of Librarians (battle psykers)
  • Battle cry, “Knowledge is power, guard it well.”
  • Origins, unknown even to the Chapter itself, their own records only begin in the early 37th millennium
  • Homeworld, Aurelia, lost to the Warp long ago, which is why the Chapter is fleet-based
  • Chapter Master, Gabriel Angelos, the hero of the original Dawn of War
  • Games, the Blood Ravens are the main Space Marine Chapter of every Dawn of War game since 2004
  • Next chapter, Dawn of War IV, set on Kronus about 200 years after Dark Crusade, out December 3, 2026

๐Ÿ“š Who Are the Blood Ravens? The Chapter With No Past

Most Space Marine Chapters proudly trace their lineage back to one of the original Legions and its Primarch. The Blood Ravens cannot. Their own Chapter histories only start in the early 37th millennium, and nothing about their founding Legion or their Primarch has survived. Because they have no Primarch to honour, they direct their reverence to the Emperor himself.

That missing past shapes everything they do. The Blood Ravens are obsessed with knowledge. They hunt for relics, ancient ruins and lost records, often work alongside the Adeptus Mechanicus on exploration missions, and maintain some of the largest libraries in the Imperium. Their most revered figure is Azariah Vidya, the “Great Father” of the Chapter, who, according to Chapter legend, took command after a disastrous early campaign and became the first to serve as Chapter Master and Chief Librarian at the same time. That tradition of Librarians in command roles continues to this day, alongside a hidden leadership circle known as the Secret Masters.

Their thirst for knowledge also makes the rest of the Imperium nervous. The Inquisition has long been suspicious of the Chapter’s habit of collecting forbidden artefacts, officially to deny them to the enemy. As the Dawn of War games show again and again, the line between studying Chaos and falling to it is dangerously thin.

๐Ÿ”ฎ Are the Blood Ravens Thousand Sons? The Big Fan Theory

The most popular question about the Chapter is which Legion they descend from. In the lore itself, rumours point to the Dark Angels, the Blood Angels or the Raven Guard, mostly because of their name and colours. The theory fans discuss most, however, is the Thousand Sons, the psychic Legion that fell to Chaos.

The arguments are circumstantial: the Blood Ravens’ many psykers, the red armour and raven symbol of the Thousand Sons’ Corvidae cult, and the fact that a loyal Thousand Sons legionary in the Horus Heresy novels voices the same idea that knowledge is power. This remains speculation. Games Workshop has never officially confirmed the Blood Ravens’ founding Legion, there is no direct in-universe link, and some Black Library writers have reportedly pushed back on the idea. For now, the Chapter’s origin is a mystery by design.

โš”๏ธ Dawn of War Story Explained: Gabriel Angelos on Tartarus

The original Dawn of War (2004) from Relic Entertainment introduces the Blood Ravens 3rd Company under Captain Gabriel Angelos. They arrive on the Imperial world of Tartarus to fight an Ork invasion alongside Colonel Carus Brom and his 37th Tartarus Planetary Defence Force. The Orks, however, are only a smokescreen. The Alpha Legion sorcerer Sindri Myr, working with Lord Bale, is secretly searching the planet for something far worse.

Angelos keeps investigating even when Inquisitor Mordecai Toth orders an evacuation ahead of a coming Warp Storm. Toth distrusts him because of his past: Angelos once requested Exterminatus on his own homeworld, Cyrene. Eldar of Craftworld Biel-Tan under Farseer Macha are also on Tartarus, trying to stop the Alpha Legion on their own. The prize turns out to be the Maledictum, an ancient Chaos stone holding the essence of a daemon.

The real tragedy happens inside the Chapter. Angelos’ old friend, the Librarian Isador Akios, is slowly seduced by Sindri, sabotages the Blood Ravens and finally steals the Maledictum. Angelos defeats Isador in a duel and executes him. Toth hands Angelos his daemon hammer God-Splitter, Sindri sacrifices himself to summon a Daemon Prince, and the Blood Ravens, aided by the surviving Eldar, destroy it. Angelos then shatters the Maledictum, only to learn that this freed the daemon inside. The whole war on Tartarus had been a blood sacrifice to Khorne. The daemon lets the Blood Ravens leave, promising to come for them, and Angelos vows to destroy it one day.

A large-scale battle in Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Definitive Edition

Where it all began: the original Dawn of War, now available as a Definitive Edition.

๐ŸŒ Dark Crusade: The First Battle for Kronus

The first expansion, Winter Assault (2005), takes place on the ice world Lorn V and focuses on the Imperial Guard, Eldar, Chaos and Orks rather than the Blood Ravens. It is still important for one reason: it introduces the Ork Warboss Gorgutz and the Eldar Farseer Taldeer, who both return later.

Dark Crusade (2006) is the expansion that matters most for Dawn of War IV, because it is set on Kronus. The planet had been held by the Tau Empire for centuries when a Necron awakening drew in seven factions. The Blood Ravens, led by Captain Davian Thule, were sent by Chapter Master Azariah Kyras to purge the world and recover relics and information about the Chapter’s early history, a clue that Kronus is tied to the Blood Ravens’ lost past.

Dark Crusade has a different ending for every faction, but the canonical outcome follows the Blood Ravens. They defeat the Imperial Guard under Colonel Lukas Aleksander, capture and execute Taldeer, crush the Word Bearers of Eliphas the Inheritor and destroy the Necron Lord of Kronus, a fight in which Thule loses an eye. Kronus returns to the Imperium, and the Blood Ravens later convince the Inquisition that their brutal methods were justified. It was the Chapter’s last great triumph for a long time.

๐Ÿ’€ Soulstorm: The Disaster in the Kaurava System

The third expansion, Soulstorm (2008), sends the Blood Ravens under Captain Indrick Boreale into the Kaurava system, where nine factions clash. The game itself never declares a winner, but the sequels fill in the blanks: the campaign was a catastrophe. According to Dawn of War II, the Chapter lost about half of its strength in Kaurava, and Dawn of War III reveals that Gorgutz’ Orks were the ones who defeated Boreale. This loss explains why the Blood Ravens are fighting for survival in the next game.

๐Ÿ› Dawn of War II: Tyranids in Sub-Sector Aurelia

After Kaurava, the weakened Chapter returns to Sub-sector Aurelia, home to its recruiting worlds. In Dawn of War II (2009), the player is an unnamed Force Commander leading a small elite strike force: the veteran Sergeant Tarkus, heavy weapons specialist Avitus, assault Sergeant Thaddeus and Scout Sergeant Cyrus, later joined by Techmarine Martellus. It is Cyrus who explains that after Kaurava, the Chapter simply cannot afford to lose its recruiting worlds.

Ork raids on Calderis, Typhon Primaris and the hive world Meridian turn out to be manipulated by the Eldar of Craftworld Ulthwรฉ, who use the Orks to delay a much bigger threat: a splinter of the Tyranid Hive Fleet Leviathan. Captain Thule is mortally wounded by a Tyranid Warrior, but the Blood Ravens’ victories allow him to fight on inside a Dreadnought. The Eldar Farseer Idranel plans to lure the swarm to Meridian at the cost of billions of lives, but the Blood Ravens strike first. On Typhon, the strike force poisons the Hive Mind, and Gabriel Angelos arrives at the last moment to help kill the Hive Tyrant Alpha.

๐Ÿฉธ Chaos Rising Explained: The Traitor and the Return of Aurelia

In Chaos Rising (2010), Aurelia, the Chapter’s lost homeworld, suddenly re-emerges from the Warp. The Black Legion under Araghast the Pillager is waiting there, with Eliphas, the Word Bearer thought dead on Kronus, serving as his reluctant lieutenant. Librarian Jonah Orion joins the strike force, and a recording soon reveals that a traitor inside the Force Commander’s own ranks gave the enemy Blood Ravens codes.

Who the traitor is depends on the player. Every squad leader can gather corruption, and the most corrupted one betrays the Chapter. If nobody is corrupted, it is Martellus. The bigger revelation comes from records found aboard the space hulk Judgment of Carrion. Long ago, Chapter Master Moriah died fighting the Great Unclean One Ulkair on Aurelia, and the then-Librarian Azariah Kyras imprisoned the daemon before the planet was swallowed by the Warp. Kyras was trapped too, and only returned centuries later aboard the Judgment of Carrion after making a pact with Ulkair. The Chapter Master of the Blood Ravens has been a servant of Chaos ever since.

Captain Apollo Diomedes of the Honour Guard, loyal to Kyras without knowing the truth, declares Angelos a traitor for refusing to abandon Aurelia. Depending on the player’s choices, Diomedes is either convinced or killed. Eliphas betrays Araghast and leaves him to die, frees Ulkair, and the Force Commander defeats the daemon and seals it away again. In a final scene, Eliphas faces the Black Legion’s master, Abaddon the Despoiler, and swears that the Blood Ravens will fall.

โš–๏ธ Retribution: The Fall of Azariah Kyras

Retribution (2011) takes place ten years after Chaos Rising. The Inquisition, under Inquisitor Adrastia, has judged the whole sub-sector beyond saving and ordered Exterminatus. Kyras plans to turn that destruction into a sacrifice to Khorne and ascend as a Daemon Prince. Every playable faction has its own reason to stop him, and the hunt ends on Cyrene, the dead world Angelos once condemned, which Kyras chose because the Inquisition would never bother to destroy it a second time.

Kyras is killed, and the Space Marine ending is treated as the canonical one. Diomedes persuades Adrastia to halt the Exterminatus, the Chapter is purged of the remaining taint, and Gabriel Angelos, who barely survived and was rebuilt with bionics, becomes the new Chapter Master of the Blood Ravens.

๐Ÿ—ก๏ธ Dawn of War III: Angelos, Macha, Gorgutz and the Spear of Khaine

Dawn of War III (2017) brings back three old rivals: Chapter Master Gabriel Angelos, Farseer Macha and Warboss Gorgutz. All three race for the Spear of Khaine, a legendary weapon hidden on Acheron, a planet that emerges from the Warp. Diomedes now serves as a Chaplain, and Jonah Orion is at Angelos’ side.

The Spear turns out to be a trap. When the Eldar Autarch Kyre seizes it, its blade shatters and he becomes the blood sacrifice that frees a Bloodthirster, a Greater Daemon of Khorne sealed in Acheron’s ice. Angelos makes a painful choice and crashes his battle barge, the Dauntless, into the planet to cripple the daemon, and Macha teleports him and Gorgutz to safety. The three enemies then fight side by side to finish the Bloodthirster, before going their separate ways, with Gorgutz keeping the broken Spear as a trophy. An after-credits scene shows a Necron Overlord preparing his armies, the hook that Dawn of War IV now picks up.

๐ŸŒŒ Dawn of War IV Story: What We Know About the Return to Kronus

Dawn of War IV is developed by KING Art Games, the German studio behind Iron Harvest, and published by Deep Silver. It was originally planned for September 17, 2026, but was delayed to December 3, 2026, with early access for Commander Edition owners three days earlier. The story is co-written by Black Library author John French and takes place on Kronus about 200 years after Dark Crusade, now in the era after the Great Rift tore the galaxy in two.

According to Deep Silver and Games Workshop, the Great Rift has left Kronus and part of the Blood Ravens stranded and cut off from reinforcements. Kronus has become a vital recruiting world for the Chapter, and the two familiar faces leading the effort to rebuild are Captain Cyrus, the former Scout Sergeant of Dawn of War II, now captain of the 10th Company, and Chief Librarian Jonah Orion. Beneath the sands, an Adeptus Mechanicus expedition has found a Necron complex that was first believed to be a tomb, then a prison. What exactly it holds is the central mystery of the campaign.

The Necrons are back on Kronus for the first time since Dark Crusade.

Four factions fight over the planet, and each one has its own campaign telling a different side of the story:

  • Space Marines, the Blood Ravens under Cyrus and Jonah Orion, joined by the Dark Angels under Company Master Astoran and Chaplain Ezrael
  • Necrons, emerging from tombs below the surface and from an invasion fleet, led by Chronomancer Thothmek
  • Orks, with two rival Warbosses fighting to lead a planet-wide Waaagh!, and Gorgutz among the returning characters
  • Adeptus Mechanicus, new to the series, searching Kronus for lost knowledge and artefacts

Games Workshop’s latest trailer article teases that the Dark Angels arrive under the leadership of a Primarch. The Dark Angels’ gene-father is Lion El’Jonson, but how big his role in the campaign will be is still unknown, so treat any theory about it as speculation until launch. The same goes for Gabriel Angelos: Deep Silver has not announced whether the Chapter Master appears. After launch, KING Art plans a Year 1 roadmap that includes a Blood Ravens story prologue and the narrative expansion Aftermath, which will continue the main campaign and add a new faction.

๐ŸŽฎ Do You Need to Play the Old Games Before Dawn of War IV?

Not necessarily. The 200-year time jump gives the story a fresh starting point, and KING Art has said the narrative is largely self-contained, so you do not need to remember every detail. Knowing Dark Crusade helps the most, since it is the earlier war on the very same planet, and Dawn of War II explains who Cyrus and Jonah Orion are. If you want to play the classics, Relic released Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War – Definitive Edition on Steam in August 2025, and Dawn of War II and Dawn of War III are also still available on Steam.
