Blue Eye Samurai Season 2 Sets a January Release Date as Netflix Confirms the Final Season for 2028
Netflix has confirmed that Blue Eye Samurai Season 2 premieres January 19, 2027, ending a wait of more than three years since the Emmy-winning animated series debuted in November 2023. The six new episodes follow Mizu as her quest for revenge crosses the ocean, and Netflix also used the announcement to confirm that the story is already locked in to end with a third and final season in 2028.
Mizu’s Revenge Crosses the Ocean to London
Season 2 picks up with Mizu (voiced by Maya Erskine) sailing away from Edo-era Japan in search of the two men who might be her father, and her search for answers now plays out against 1657 London. According to Netflix, she will face new friends, old foes, and her own demons there, all while confronting what it means to stand out as an outsider in a society that, according to the creators, persecuted women as witches and treated nonconformity as something to be stamped out. Back in Japan, Akemi and Taigen have to navigate Edo Castle under a dangerous new Shogun, while Ringo searches for a new purpose of his own now that Mizu is gone.
Three New Voices Join a Returning Cast
Erskine returns alongside Brenda Song as Akemi, Darren Barnet as Taigen, and Masi Oka as Ringo. They are joined by three newcomers to the voice cast: Jonathan Pryce as Old Violet, Joel Kim Booster as Priest Ando, and Sherry Cola as Kuma. Blue Spirit, the animation studio behind Season 1’s hybrid of hand-painted 2D and 3D animation, returns to handle the London-set chapter as well.

Netflix’s date announcement teaser shows Mizu’s path to London is as violent as ever.
A Planned Ending Is Already Locked In for 2028
Netflix had quietly renewed Blue Eye Samurai for a third season back in August, and the studio has now confirmed that run will bring Mizu’s story to its planned conclusion in 2028. Series creators Amber Noizumi and Michael Green have said they knew how Mizu’s journey would end from the show’s very first episode, and only hoped they would get the chance to finish telling it. Looking back on the three-year gap between seasons, the pair compared the show’s painstaking historical research to building a city: “Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither were 17th-century London or Edo Japan.”
Blue Eye Samurai’s first season won four Emmy Awards and built a reputation on its blend of meticulous Edo-period research with Western and Eastern animation styles. With a release date now set and the finish line already mapped out for 2028, Season 2 arrives January 19, only on Netflix.
