DC Studios Boss Says Lanterns Season 2 News Is Coming Before Year’s End, but a Renewal Isn’t Confirmed Yet
Lanterns wrapped its eight episode first season on HBO Max this month, closing out the mystery behind Hal Jordan’s death and handing John Stewart the ring on his own terms. With that chapter finished, DC Studios co-chief Peter Safran has now given fans their clearest timeline yet for when word on a potential Season 2 might arrive, though he stopped short of confirming the show is actually coming back.
Safran Points to a Decision “Before the End of the Year”
Speaking with Collider’s Steve Weintraub ahead of Clayface’s premiere, Safran said fans should hear something about Lanterns Season 2 before 2026 is out. That gives viewers a concrete window to watch for news, but it’s not a renewal announcement. Safran also confirmed that what the Season 2 writers’ room comes up with will directly determine whether the series moves forward at all, rather than the decision being a formality tied to the first season’s reception.

Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan helped drive the mystery at the center of Lanterns’ first season.
Reception Was the Easy Part, a Second Story Is the Hard Part
Asked what he took away from the first season, Safran was unambiguous about what it had already accomplished for a character he described as having gone largely dormant as a screen property since the poorly received 2011 Green Lantern movie. For him, the clearest win was that the show “brought Green Lantern back into the conversation, into the public culture” in a genuinely positive way. But that success doesn’t automatically buy a second season. Safran was direct that it all comes down to whether the writers’ room lands on a story the team believes is a worthy successor to a first season he’s called great, and he confirmed that’s the single factor everyone is waiting on.
Safran was less willing to clear up the finale’s biggest lingering question, declining to say whether John charging Hal’s ring means Hal is definitively dead. That leaves one of the mysteries from our coverage of the Season 1 finale still open heading into whatever comes next. All eight episodes of Lanterns are streaming now on HBO Max.
