Nicolas Cage and Bill Skarsgård Face Off in First Trailer for Lords of War
Twenty-two years after Lord of War first hit theaters, Vertical has released the first teaser trailer for its sequel, Lords of War, confirming that Nicolas Cage is officially back as notorious arms dealer Yuri Orlov. The teaser gives fans their earliest look at the long-gestating follow-up, which was first announced back in 2023 and has gone through years of development before finally wrapping production this year in Morocco.
A Father-Son War Over the Family Business
Lords of War picks up with Yuri years after his dealings in Sierra Leone, only for his legacy to be threatened by a mercenary mastermind who turns out to be his own son, Anton, played by Bill Skarsgård. Rather than walking away from the family business like Yuri’s late brother Vitaly did in the original film, Anton is building a private army of his own and trying to outdo his father, pulling both men into America’s wars in the Middle East. The two are set on a collision course over power, influence, and even the same woman, turning what should be a reunion into a bitter rivalry.
Niccol Returns Behind the Camera for a Starry Sequel
Andrew Niccol, who wrote and directed the 2005 original, is back in both roles for Lords of War, reuniting with Cage more than two decades later. Laura Harrier, Sylvia Hoeks, and Greg Tarzan Davis round out the supporting cast, while Philippe Rousselet and Fabrice Gianfermi return as producers for Vendôme Pictures alongside Niccol and Cage’s own Saturn Films. Vertical acquired the U.S. distribution rights to the film earlier this year and has set Lords of War for a January 22, 2027 theatrical release.

Bill Skarsgård plays Anton, the ruthless son Yuri Orlov never knew he had, in Lords of War.
The original Lord of War made just $72.6 million at the box office against mixed reviews before finding a much bigger audience on home video, and Cage is the only cast member returning from that film, with Ethan Hawke, Bridget Moynahan, and Jared Leto sitting out the sequel. With the first teaser now online, all eyes turn to January 22, 2027, when Lords of War finally brings Yuri Orlov back to theaters.
