Pikmin Lore Explained: Is PNF-404 Earth? Olimar, Koppai and the Full Story Before Pikmin 4 on Switch 2

Pikmin is having a big week. Nintendo just declared November 1 “Pikmin Day”, released a free demo of Pikmin 4 – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Dandori Academy and confirmed the upgraded game for November 12. If you are jumping in for the first time, or returning after years away, this is the perfect moment for a complete Pikmin lore explained guide: who Captain Olimar is, why everyone keeps crashing on the same planet, what happened in each main game, and the question fans have argued about for more than two decades: is PNF-404 actually Earth?

Pikmin tells most of its story through voyage logs, treasure notes and short cutscenes, so a lot of it is easy to miss. We stick to what the games and Nintendo’s developers have actually said, and we clearly mark fan theories as speculation.

⚠️ Spoiler Warning ⚠️ This article spoils the stories of Pikmin, Pikmin 2, Pikmin 3 (including Deluxe), Hey! Pikmin and Pikmin 4, including the Pikmin 4 ending.

🚀 Who Is Captain Olimar? Hocotate and the First Crash

Captain Olimar is a tiny, roughly one-inch tall pilot from the planet Hocotate, and he works for a space delivery company called Hocotate Freight. He has a wife, a son and a daughter, and he is the series’ main character from the very first game. His Japanese name, Orimā, is a syllable anagram of Mario, another Shigeru Miyamoto creation.

In the original Pikmin (2001), Olimar is on vacation in his ship, the S.S. Dolphin, when a space rock slams into it. The Dolphin falls toward an uncharted planet, breaking apart on the way down, and its parts are scattered across the surface. When Olimar wakes up, he learns the worst part: the planet’s air is full of oxygen, which is poisonous to Hocotatians. His life support will only last 30 days.

To survive, Olimar teams up with small native creatures that are close to extinction and cannot thrive without a leader. Because they remind him of the “Pikpik” brand of carrots from home, he names them Pikmin. By leading them into battle and carrying food back to their Onions, he helps them multiply, while the Pikmin carry the lost ship parts back to the Dolphin.

The game has three endings, depending on how many of the 30 ship parts Olimar recovers (25 of them are required):

  • Best ending: Olimar recovers all 30 parts, including the last one from an Emperor Bulblax. He says goodbye, the Pikmin fight off a predator on their own, and as he flies home, many more Onions of unknown colors rise from the planet. Pikmin 2 treats this as the canon ending.
  • Normal ending: with the 25 required parts but not all 30, Olimar escapes just before his life support runs out.
  • Bad ending: without the required parts, the Dolphin fails and crashes again. The Pikmin carry Olimar to an Onion, and he emerges as a cross between a Hocotatian and a Pikmin.

Keep that bad ending in mind. Pikmin 4 brings the idea of being turned into a Pikmin-like being back in a big way.

💰 Pikmin 2 Story Explained: Treasure, Debt and Louie’s Secret

Pikmin 2 (2004) starts right after the first game. When Olimar gets home, he finds Hocotate Freight in serious trouble. His co-worker Louie lost a shipment of golden Pikpik carrots to a “space bunny”, and the company had to take out a huge loan to cover it. The President even sold Olimar’s beloved Dolphin.

Then Olimar drops a souvenir from the Pikmin planet: a simple bottle cap. The company’s new talking ship appraises it as very valuable, and the President sends Olimar and Louie back to the planet to collect more “treasure”. On Hocotate, everyday objects that we would call junk are priceless, and that joke drives the whole game. Along the way, the pair meet two new Pikmin types, White Pikmin and Purple Pikmin. Louie’s notes, meanwhile, show he is mostly interested in how the local wildlife would taste.

Once the debt is paid, Olimar heads home and realizes Louie was left behind. He returns with the President himself to find Louie and keep earning money for the company. They eventually find Louie deep underground, riding the Titan Dweevil, a giant spider-like creature armed with treasure-weapons. After defeating it, they bring Louie home.

A special bonus epilogue reveals the twist: Louie never lost the carrots to a space bunny. He ate them and lied to the President. A ship’s log even hints that Louie may have been controlling the Titan Dweevil, rather than being its captive.

🍋 Pikmin 3 Story Explained: Koppai and the Hunt for Food

Pikmin carrying a giant lemon-like fruit in Pikmin 3 Deluxe

In Pikmin 3, the giant fruit of PNF-404 could save an entire planet.

Pikmin 3 (2013) introduces a new planet and three new heroes. The people of Koppai face a famine caused by a booming population, booming appetites and a basic lack of planning. After sending out scouting probes, they find a planet rich in edible fruit, and this is where the Pikmin planet finally gets its official name: PNF-404.

Koppai sends three explorers: the engineer Alph, the botanist Brittany and Captain Charlie. Their ship, the S.S. Drake, malfunctions as it approaches and crash-lands, separating the crew. Charlie is swallowed by the Vehemoth Phosbat in the Distant Tundra and only freed later, Alph meets Red Pikmin and finds the ship, and Brittany is rescued from the Garden of Hope with help from the new Rock Pikmin. The game also adds Winged Pikmin.

Even with the ship found, the Koppaites are stuck, because the cosmic-drive key they need to fly home has vanished. Data files left by Olimar reveal he picked it up, thinking it was treasure. The crew accidentally rescues Louie instead of Olimar, and Louie promptly steals their food and runs off. After catching him, they learn Olimar is in the Formidable Oak, held by a mysterious creature called the Plasm Wraith. Once it is defeated, Olimar returns the key, and the Koppaites give Olimar and Louie a ride back to Hocotate.

If you collect every fruit, the narrator hints that the S.S. Drake’s crash might not have been an accident. A post-credits scene shows a flaming object falling to the planet, and Pikmin 3 Deluxe (2020) explains it in the side story Olimar’s Comeback: it is a pod carrying Olimar and Louie, sent back by the President to recover the destroyed ship they left behind. A second side story, Olimar’s Assignment, shows Olimar and Louie’s side of events during the main story, including how Olimar came across the cosmic-drive key.

✨ Hey! Pikmin: Olimar’s Sparklium Detour

The 3DS spin-off Hey! Pikmin (2017) is a side-scrolling game, but it still adds to Olimar’s story. Flying his new S.S. Dolphin II, Olimar is hit by an asteroid and crash-lands on an unfamiliar planet. His ship runs on Sparklium, and he needs 30,000 of it, which he gets by having Pikmin carry treasure that turns out to be ordinary household objects. In the end, he recovers the vital Sparklium Converter from a Leech Hydroe that swallowed it and turned into a monster, and flies home.

The game never clearly states whether this planet is PNF-404, and as a spin-off its place in the canon is debated. Sparklium, however, returns as a key resource in Pikmin 4.

🐶 Pikmin 4 Story Explained: The Rescue Corps, Oatchi and the Leaflings

The Rescue Corps, Oatchi and Red Pikmin in Pikmin 4

Pikmin 4 puts you in the boots of the Rescue Corps’ newest recruit, with Oatchi at your side.

Pikmin 4 (2023) opens with a familiar scene. Olimar crash-lands on PNF-404 in the Dolphin, recruits Pikmin to find his missing ship parts, and befriends a green, dog-like creature he names Moss. After finding his ship’s radio, he sends an SOS along with his voyage logs, and then mysteriously disappears.

An intergalactic rescue organization, the Rescue Corps, answers the call. Led by Captain Shepherd, the team flies to PNF-404, but their ship malfunctions and the crew has to eject. The player is the Corps’ newest recruit, a fully customizable character, and is soon joined by Oatchi, Shepherd’s loyal rescue pup. After saving Shepherd and the communication officer Collin, the recruit discovers the ship has no power. The fix is Sparklium, which can be extracted from the treasures scattered across the planet.

It turns out Olimar’s distress call reached many others. Treasure hunters and explorers came to PNF-404 after picking up his signal and became castaways themselves, including several Koppaites such as Yorke, Nelle and Don Bergman, who are searching for treasure to save Koppai from hunger.

The big mystery is a strange figure who travels with Moss. This is a leafling: a person whose head is covered in leaves, who can now breathe the planet’s air without a suit, and who is obsessed with dandori, the Pikmin idea of efficient planning. The figure has been turning castaways into leaflings by taking them into Onions. The Corps’ chief medic Yonny develops a cure, and the team eventually discovers the truth: the mysterious leafling is Olimar himself. He had repaired the Dolphin and tried to leave, but the escape failed and the Pikmin took him into an Onion. After defeating him in a Dandori Battle, the recruit cures him.

🌿 Pikmin 4 Ending Explained: Moss, Oatchi and the Ancient Sirehound

Just as the mission seems complete, Shepherd discovers that Oatchi has a Pikmin-like leaf growing on his tail, and Yonny’s cure does not work on him. Olimar explains that the same thing happened to Moss: she had stowed away on his ship, and her condition is what caused his failed escape. The Corps returns to the surface to find ingredients for a new cure, and keeps looking for castaways, including the Koppaite veterinarian Nelle.

The final piece is a giant dog, the Ancient Sirehound, which looks like a huge relative of Oatchi and Moss. Yonny believes it holds a key ingredient for the cure. Deep in the Cavern for a King, the recruit finds it with Louie, who came to PNF-404 looking for food and rides the beast into battle. After the fight, the recruit rescues Louie and collects the DNA needed to cure Oatchi.

Moss, however, cannot be cured. Olimar concludes that she was born on PNF-404 and decides to leave her there with the Pikmin. The Rescue Corps flies home with everyone they rescued, Olimar leaves in the Dolphin, and in the final scene Moss goes exploring with the Pikmin while the now-tamed Ancient Sirehound happily follows her.

Pikmin 4 also adds Olimar’s Shipwreck Tale, a side mode that lets you replay Olimar’s crash before the main story with only Red, Blue and Yellow Pikmin, Moss instead of Oatchi, and a 15-day limit to recover 30 ship parts. It is presented as Olimar’s own retelling of events.

🧭 Pikmin Timeline Explained: Where Does Pikmin 4 Fit?

This is where the Pikmin timeline gets messy. Pikmin 4 retells Olimar’s crash in a way that does not match the original Pikmin, and many details clash with the earlier games. For example, Koppaite castaways in Pikmin 4 are already on PNF-404 hunting for treasure to save their hungry planet, which seems to contradict Pikmin 3, where Koppai only discovers PNF-404. Several treasure notes and logs in Pikmin 4 also hint that the events of Pikmin 2 and Pikmin 3 still lie in the future.

Nintendo has deliberately left this open. Asked whether Pikmin 4’s story connects to the previous games, planning director Yutaka Hiramuki said in Nintendo’s Ask the Developer interview: “As for the story’s timeline, I’ll leave that to players’ imaginations.”

The two most popular readings among fans are:

  • Alternate timeline: Pikmin 4 is a different version of Olimar’s first crash, where his SOS changes everything that follows. This is the most common interpretation.
  • Reimagined start: Pikmin 4 works as a fresh entry point, with Pikmin 2 and Pikmin 3 as possible future events, even if small details do not line up.

Both are fan interpretations. Nintendo has confirmed neither.

🌍 Is Pikmin Set on Earth? The PNF-404 Mystery

Oatchi and Pikmin fighting a fire-breathing creature among garden objects in Pikmin 4

Garden tools, bricks and everyday objects: PNF-404 looks a lot like our world.

Now the big one: is Pikmin set on Earth? Officially, Nintendo has never said so. In the games, PNF-404 is simply an “Earth-like” planet. But the hints are everywhere:

  • Human objects: the “treasures” in Pikmin 2 and Pikmin 4 are things like bottle caps, batteries, toys and food, some of them based on real products. Pikmin 4’s Hero’s Hideaway is set inside a house.
  • Our plants and fruit: many plants on PNF-404 resemble real ones, and every fruit in Pikmin 3 is based on real-world fruit.
  • Oxygen and a white moon: the air is full of oxygen, deadly to Olimar but exactly what humans breathe, and Olimar mentions a pale white moon in his logs.
  • A familiar globe: two treasures in Pikmin 2 form the halves of a globe showing Earth’s continents, and the ship describes it as a map of the planet.
  • “Ancient” technology: in Pikmin 3, the Koppaites find a mobile phone and their ship calls it an ancient communication device used on this planet.
  • No humans anywhere: despite all these objects, not a single human ever appears.

Speculation: the most popular fan theory is that PNF-404 is Earth after humanity has disappeared, with animals and plants evolving into the strange creatures we see. Fans also point out that the Pikmin 3 world map looks like scientific predictions of how Earth’s continents could merge in the very distant future, which would mean Pikmin 3 is set much later than the other games. Neither theory has been confirmed by Nintendo, and the games themselves never explain what happened to the people who left all these objects behind.

🌱 What Are Pikmin? Onions, Types and the Leafling Theory

Pikmin are small, plant-and-animal hybrids about the height of a coin. They live in Onions, flying nests that turn food into new Pikmin seeds, and they are incredibly loyal to their leader. Different types have different abilities: Red Pikmin resist fire, Blue Pikmin can swim, Yellow Pikmin handle electricity, White Pikmin resist poison, Purple Pikmin are heavy and strong, Rock Pikmin smash crystal, and Winged Pikmin fly. Pikmin 4 adds Ice Pikmin and the nocturnal Glow Pikmin.

Pikmin 4 also raises a darker question about what the Pikmin want. After he is cured, Olimar suggests that people taken into an Onion may have Pikmin DNA mixed into their bodies, making them sick if they try to leave the planet. He wonders whether the Pikmin are trying to create a permanent leader for themselves. Olimar and Yonny also suspect the Ancient Sirehound could be an ancestor of space dogs like Oatchi and Moss. These ideas come from the characters’ in-game speculation, not from a confirmed explanation, but they add a fascinating layer to Pikmin lore.

There is also a strange pattern: nearly everyone who approaches PNF-404 crashes. Characters across the series talk about their ships being pulled in or malfunctioning near the planet, and Pikmin 3’s narrator suggests the Drake’s crash may not have been an accident. What causes it remains one of the series’ unsolved mysteries.
