Thief: The Dark Project Remastered’s New Expansion Is Made by the Black Parade Mod Team

Nightdive Studios has revealed that Thief: The Dark Project Remastered will arrive on December 3 with a brand new expansion campaign called The Tarnished Mirror, and it is being made by the team behind The Black Parade, a 2023 fan mod widely considered one of the best things to happen to the Thief series in the past two decades.

Bridging Two Thief Games

The Tarnished Mirror consists of four new missions and is described as “a bridge between Thief: The Dark Project and Thief 2: The Metal Age”. According to Steam’s store listing, the campaign picks up after Garrett defeats the Trickster, feeling cheated out of his reward and taking on small jobs again while the city is rocked by political and ideological unrest. What looks like a simple theft of a Precursor hand mirror ends up pulling him into a conspiracy he never saw coming.

Thief: The Dark Project Remastered rebuilds the 1998 original in Nightdive’s KEX Engine, including the extra missions added by the Thief Gold re-release.

From Acclaimed Mod to Official Canon

The Black Parade, released in 2023, earned a reputation as one of the most ambitious fan projects in the Thief community, leaning into the series’ contested legacy of horror and building levels far more sprawling than the original engine could have handled on ’90s hardware. The Tarnished Mirror follows a similar path, using the remaster’s improved technology to deliver more vertical, elaborate level design, along with interiors built from familiar Thief assets reassembled into stranger, more unsettling spaces than the mainline campaigns typically offer.

What’s in the Remaster

Thief: The Dark Project Remastered is built on Nightdive’s proprietary KEX Engine and bundles together the original Dark Project campaign’s 12 missions with the three extra missions added by the 1999 Thief Gold re-release. The remaster adds support for up to 4K at 120FPS, modern gamepad controls with a new weapon wheel and motion support, a mission select screen for replaying any completed level, achievements, and built-in support for custom campaigns, giving players access to thousands of hours of additional community-made content.

The remaster also ships with graphical upgrades to textures, models and animations across every mission.

Release Details

Thief: The Dark Project Remastered is available to pre-order now on Steam for €29.99 ahead of its December 3 release, with The Tarnished Mirror included at launch. A Digital Deluxe bundle adds the expansion’s soundtrack and a remaster diary novel preview. Nightdive previously revived the series’ original trapezoid big box packaging for a physical special edition, though that release is currently limited to consoles.

Gamersuniverse previously covered the remaster’s initial reveal, and today’s expansion news confirms Thief is getting one of its most ambitious new campaigns yet, built by the very fans who helped keep the series alive.
