Verity Opens to $32.6 Million as Tom Cruise’s Digger Suffers a Costly Box Office Bomb
This weekend’s domestic box office split cleanly into a winner and a loser. Verity, Amazon MGM Studios’ Colleen Hoover adaptation starring Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson, opened at number one with roughly $32.6 million, while Digger, the Alejandro G. Iñárritu drama starring Tom Cruise that Gamersuniverse covered ahead of its release, stumbled to a reported $8 million start, a result several trade outlets, including Deadline, are calling Cruise’s weakest opening weekend in nearly two decades.
Verity Rides Colleen Hoover’s Hot Streak to the Top
Verity opened in roughly 3,510 theaters and posted an estimated $32.6 million domestic debut, the biggest weekend of the year so far for a Hoover adaptation. As Gamersuniverse covered in our full review, the film leans hard on Hathaway’s performance as the unconscious, possibly dangerous novelist at its center, and it’s following a pattern that’s become reliable for Hoover’s books on screen. The last big-screen adaptation, 2024’s It Ends With Us, opened modestly before legging out to nearly $350 million worldwide against a $25 million budget, and Verity’s strong opening suggests it could follow a similar trajectory.

Verity topped the weekend box office with an estimated $32.6 million domestic debut.
Digger Becomes a Costly Bomb for Tom Cruise and Warner Bros.
Digger told a very different story. The film opened in roughly 3,321 theaters and brought in an estimated $8 million domestically, well under even the softened mid-teens projections Gamersuniverse flagged ahead of release. That’s a rough outcome for a film reported to have cost somewhere in the $125 to $130 million range to make, and it arrives as a particularly public miss given how openly Warner Bros. positioned Digger as an awards play built around Cruise’s performance as a disfigured oil tycoon.

Digger opened to an estimated $8 million domestically, a sharp miss even against its own lowered expectations.
Cruise addressed the result directly rather than staying quiet about it. Posting after the film’s theatrical bow, he thanked the cast and crew and wrote that he’s “so proud of what we created,” standing behind the project publicly even as headlines focused on the number itself.
A Steady Rest of the Top Five
Outside the top two, the chart held fairly steady week to week. Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil reboot, which Gamersuniverse covered as part of last weekend’s crowded box office, added another estimated $12.5 million in its third weekend, while Paramount’s Heart of the Beast held on with roughly $11 million in its second. A24’s Primetime rounded out the five with about $8 million in its second weekend, landing almost exactly where Digger opened on its first.
