Avengers: Endgame Encore Leads a Stacked Weekend as Four Movies Clear $20 Million

Four wide releases cleared the $20 million mark domestically over the same weekend for the first time in years, and Marvel’s own back catalog ended up leading the pack. Avengers: Endgame Encore, Resident Evil, A24’s Primetime, and Paramount’s Heart of the Beast all landed within a few million dollars of one another between September 25 and 27, turning a normally quiet late-September frame into one of the most crowded box office weekends of 2026.

A Marvel Encore Reclaims the Top Spot

Disney and Marvel Studios’ theatrical re-release of Avengers: Endgame finished the weekend at number one with an estimated $26 million from around 3,060 theaters, after a $11.2 million Friday. That’s enough to push the film’s combined domestic haul, adding the 2026 re-release on top of its original 2019 run, to roughly $884 million, closing in on the $900 million mark. The re-release, subtitled Encore, isn’t just nostalgia bait either: prints in theaters now include new footage and scenes tied to Avengers: Doomsday, which is set to arrive in theaters this December.

Resident Evil Holds Strong in Its Second Weekend

Right behind it, Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil reboot took second place with about $23.8 million in its second weekend, a roughly 60 percent drop from its record-breaking opening. Gamersuniverse already covered that franchise-best debut, which finished around $60 million domestically, and this weekend’s hold pushes the film’s domestic total past $100 million. That’s a steep second-weekend drop by industry standards, but the film was always going to face a front-loaded audience given how strongly horror openings tend to skew toward the first few days, and it’s still comfortably outpacing every other entry in the seven-film franchise at this point in its run.

Primetime and Heart of the Beast Battle for Third

The tightest race of the weekend was for third place. A24’s Primetime opened to about $20.5 million from roughly 2,874 theaters, narrowly edging out Paramount’s Heart of the Beast, which brought in around $20 million from about 3,435 locations. Primetime marks the narrative feature directing debut of Lance Oppenheim and stars Robert Pattinson as Chris Hansen, dramatizing the origins of the television newsmagazine program that confronted men who arrived at a sting house expecting to meet minors. The cast also includes Merritt Wever, Skyler Gisondo, Matthew Maher, Bokeem Woodbine, Anna Faris, Phoebe Bridgers, and Sean Bridgers. The real Chris Hansen has publicly pushed back on the film since seeing it, calling its portrayal of events “detached from reality,” a dispute worth keeping in mind given the film dramatizes a living public figure.

Heart of the Beast, David Ayer’s Brad Pitt survival thriller, is the film Gamersuniverse reviewed earlier this week, praising Pitt’s physical performance and the German Shepherd Uber’s turn as Odin while landing on a 7.5 out of 10 overall. Its opening weekend numbers back up that positive reception, keeping it neck and neck with Primetime for third place rather than trailing the pack.

Forgotten Island Rounds Out a Packed Weekend

DreamWorks Animation’s Forgotten Island also opened wide this weekend, landing outside the $20 million club. Pre-weekend tracking had pointed to a domestic debut somewhere in the mid-teens, well behind the four films leading the chart. With five wide releases all pulling in a real audience at once, this is shaping up to be one of the busiest single weekends at theaters in months, and a welcome sign heading into what’s typically a slower stretch of the calendar before the holiday season ramps up.
