Who Is William Afton? FNAF Lore Explained From Purple Guy to Springtrap and Glitchtrap
With Freddy, Bonnie, Chica and Foxy roaming Fortnite for Fortnitemares 2026 and Halloween just days away, Five Nights at Freddy’s is everywhere again, and one question keeps coming back from new fans: who is William Afton? He is the man behind almost every tragedy in the series, the killer whose victims haunt the animatronics and the reason Springtrap exists at all. Here is the complete FNAF lore of William Afton explained, from the first Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza to Springtrap, Scraptrap, Glitchtrap and the mysteries of the Steel Wool era.
FNAF is famous for hiding its story in minigames, newspaper clippings, phone calls and secret cutscenes, and its fandom is just as famous for theories. That is why we clearly separate what the games show, what official books and guides add, and what is fan interpretation. Anything that is not confirmed is marked as such.

π° Who Is William Afton? The Co-Founder Behind Freddy’s
William Afton is the main antagonist of Scott Cawthon’s original Five Nights at Freddy’s games. Together with his business partner Henry Emily, he co-founded the Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza restaurants, the family pizzerias whose singing animatronics became the faces of the franchise. Henry was the engineer behind many of the animatronics, while William, a gifted roboticist himself, later ran his own company, Afton Robotics, LLC, which built the far more advanced machines of Sister Location.
Behind the friendly business partner was a murderer. Afton used his restaurants, his animatronics and even the company’s own costumes to lure children away from their parents. The souls of many of his victims stayed behind and possessed the animatronics, which is the reason the machines turn violent at night in almost every game. In other words, nearly everything that goes wrong in FNAF can be traced back to him.
The games revealed him slowly. The first game only hints at an unnamed killer, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 shows him as a purple sprite, Five Nights at Freddy’s 3 reveals his fate, and the surname “Afton” was finally spoken in the opening cutscene of Sister Location in 2016. Later games and official books confirmed the full name William Afton.
π Why Is He Called Purple Guy?
Before anyone knew his name, fans called him Purple Guy. The nickname comes from the Atari-style minigames of Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 (2014), which can randomly appear after a game over. In them, the killer is a simple purple figure with a wide smile, shown stalking and killing children. The same sprite returns in the minigames of Five Nights at Freddy’s 3, and the colour purple has been tied to Afton ever since.
π The Missing Children Incident Explained

Freddy Fazbear and his friends look cheerful, but the original animatronics hide the bodies of Afton’s victims.
The first Five Nights at Freddy’s (2014) never shows the killer, but newspaper clippings that occasionally appear on the wall tell the story. Children were lured into a back room of Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza on the night of June 26th by a man dressed as a company mascot. Later clippings say that five children are now linked to the incident, that a suspect was charged, but that the bodies were never found. Another clipping reports that parents noticed what looked like blood and mucus around the eyes and mouths of the mascots, and that the health department threatened to shut the restaurant down over the smell. The game never gives a year for the murders, and fans still debate the exact date.
This is the infamous Missing Children Incident. The killer was Afton, and he hid the bodies inside the animatronics. The children’s spirits possessed the original animatronics, and many fans see that as the reason the machines hunt the night guard: to them, any adult in the building at night could be the man who killed them.
π The First Victim: The Puppet and Henry’s Daughter
Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is set in 1987 at a newer Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, where night guard Jeremy Fitzgerald learns that the restaurant is under police investigation. Its death minigames show the purple figure killing children, and the minigame Take Cake to the Children ends with a crying child outside the restaurant being killed by him. This child is widely understood to be the soul behind the Puppet, also known as the Marionette.
Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria Simulator later makes clear who she was: the Puppet is possessed by the daughter of Henry Emily, Afton’s own business partner, and she is generally considered Afton’s first victim. Many fans believe the Puppet then gave the other murdered children new life by placing them inside the animatronics, as hinted in FNAF 2’s Give Gifts, Give Life minigame, but how exactly this works is never fully explained. In the novels and the films, Henry’s daughter is called Charlotte, or Charlie.
πͺ The Afton Family: Michael, Elizabeth and the Crying Child
Afton’s own family pays a terrible price for his work. Five Nights at Freddy’s 4 (2015) takes place in 1983 and follows a young boy who is terrified of the animatronics at a nearby family restaurant. His older brother bullies him, and in the final minigame the brother and his friends push the boy’s head into Fredbear’s mouth as a cruel joke. The animatronic bites down, and the boy is fatally injured. This event is known to fans as the Bite of ’83. The games themselves never name this family, but later official book material connects them to the Aftons, and most fans treat the boy, the so-called Crying Child, as William’s youngest son.
His daughter Elizabeth appears in Five Nights at Freddy’s: Sister Location (2016). In a secret minigame, a little girl begs her father to let her see Circus Baby, the animatronic he built. Despite his warning to stay away, she approaches Baby, who captures and kills her. Her soul ends up inside Circus Baby. Her name, Elizabeth, was only revealed after Sister Location, and she returns as Scrap Baby in Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria Simulator.
His eldest son Michael is the protagonist of Sister Location. He takes a job as a technician at Circus Baby’s Entertainment and Rental, the underground facility that stores Afton Robotics’ Funtime animatronics. In the main ending, Ennard, a fusion of the animatronics, uses a machine called the Scooper on him and wears his body to escape. Some fans also believe Michael was the cruel older brother from FNAF 4, a connection that comes from official book material rather than the games.
Michael’s story ends in one of the most important cutscenes in the series. After beating the Golden Freddy mode in Sister Location’s Custom Night, Michael stands in the burnt ruins of Fazbear’s Fright and speaks to his father. He says he found what William sent him looking for, that the animatronics mistook him for his father, and that he put a girl back together just as his father asked, which fans read as Elizabeth. Michael says he should be dead but is not, that he has been living in the shadows, and that he is going to come and find his father. Then Springtrap appears.
βοΈ How Did William Afton Become Springtrap?
The answer comes from the minigames of Five Nights at Freddy’s 3 (2015). After the original pizzeria closed, Afton returned to the abandoned building. In the first four minigames, the purple figure dismantles Freddy, Bonnie, Chica and Foxy one by one. In the fifth, the ghosts of the children corner him in a hidden room. Panicking, Afton climbs into an old yellow rabbit costume to hide.
That was a fatal mistake. The yellow rabbit, known in official material as Spring Bonnie, was a springlock suit, a hybrid that could work as an animatronic or be worn as a costume once its machinery was locked back against the inside lining. The game’s cassette tapes warn how dangerous these suits are, and the minigame shows exactly why: the springlocks fail, and the mechanism crushes Afton inside the suit as the ghosts fade away.
Afton did not stay dead. His body remained trapped in the suit, and he returned as Springtrap, a rotting rabbit with a human corpse visible through the holes in its shell.
π’ Springtrap and Fazbear’s Fright

Fazbear’s Fright was built to cash in on the legends of Freddy’s, and it brought Springtrap back.
Five Nights at Freddy’s 3 is set thirty years after Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza closed. A horror attraction called Fazbear’s Fright is about to open, and its team searches for real props from the old restaurant. On the second night, they discover a derelict yellow rabbit animatronic: Springtrap. He is the only animatronic in the game that can kill the player, and unlike the other machines, he moves in an unsettlingly human way, because there is a human inside.
Depending on how players complete the secret minigames, the game ends with the children’s souls either set free or not. Either way, a final newspaper reports that Fazbear’s Fright burned down under unknown circumstances. Sister Location’s secret cutscene later shows that Springtrap survived the fire.
π₯ Scraptrap and Henry’s Final Trap
Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria Simulator, released for free on December 4, 2017, brings the original story to a close. The player runs a new pizzeria and salvages strange animatronics that show up in the alley at night. One of them is a ruined, almost skeletal version of the rabbit suit with even more of Afton’s body visible. Fans named him Scraptrap, a name later used in official guidebooks, and it is in this game that Afton says the line that defines him: “I always come back.”
In the Completion Ending, the truth is revealed. The pizzeria was a trap built by Henry Emily, heard only through a cassette recording, to lure the last haunted animatronics into one place: Scrap Baby (Elizabeth), Molten Freddy, Scraptrap (William) and Lefty, a machine Henry built to capture the Puppet. Henry then sets the building on fire. In his speech, he asks the children’s souls to rest, tells his daughter he is sorry he could not save her, and condemns William, his old friend, telling him that the darkest pit of hell has opened up for him. Henry himself stays inside, and so does the franchisee, the player character, whose identity is never confirmed. Many fans believe it was Michael.
πΉ Is Ultimate Custom Night Afton’s Hell? (Speculation)
Ultimate Custom Night (2018) is a free challenge game in which players face up to 50 characters from across the series, including both Springtrap and Scraptrap. The game gives no clear story frame, which led to one of the most popular readings in the fandom: that the unnamed player character is William Afton himself, trapped in his personal hell after Henry’s fire and forced to face his victims again and again. Cryptic lines and hidden cutscenes support the idea for many fans, but the game never states it outright, so treat it as an interpretation rather than confirmed canon.
πΎ Is Glitchtrap William Afton?
With Five Nights at Freddy’s: Help Wanted (2019), Steel Wool Studios took over development with Scott Cawthon and moved the story into the present. The VR game is a Fazbear Entertainment product meant to convince the public that the old murders are just urban legends. Hidden tapes reveal that something infected the game through an old circuit board: a digital, rabbit-like entity in a Spring Bonnie costume that fans call Glitchtrap, a name taken from the game’s files. Glitchtrap tries to escape the game by taking over the player’s mind.
The games never say Glitchtrap’s real name, but official guidebooks such as Five Nights at Freddy’s: The Ultimate Guide and the Official Character Encyclopedia refer to him as William Afton. That makes the idea that Afton survived as haunted code the most widely accepted explanation, and it fits his catchphrase perfectly. Still, the games themselves leave room for doubt, as the next chapters show.
π’ Burntrap, Vanny and Security Breach

Beneath the neon of the Mega Pizzaplex lie the ruins of an older Freddy Fazbear’s restaurant.
Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach (December 16, 2021) is set in Freddy Fazbear’s Mega Pizzaplex, where a boy named Gregory is trapped overnight with the help of Glamrock Freddy. He is hunted by security guard Vanessa and by Vanny, a woman in a white rabbit costume who is responsible for several missing children cases in the complex. One ending reveals that Vanessa and Vanny are the same person, and the Official Character Encyclopedia describes Vanny as an agent of Afton, which is widely read as a sign that she was serving Glitchtrap.
Another ending takes Gregory into the ruins of an old Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza buried beneath the Pizzaplex. There, a burned rabbit animatronic rises and tries to take control of Freddy. Its name in the files is Burntrap, and the official guidebook The Security Breach Files directly ties this ending to defeating Afton. Because the game itself never names him, fans have argued about Burntrap’s true identity ever since.
π€ The Mimic Twist: Is Afton Still the Villain?
The Security Breach DLC Ruin (2023) introduced a new threat. Gregory’s friend Cassie enters the ruined Pizzaplex to rescue him, only to discover that the voice guiding her into the depths belongs to the Mimic, an endoskeleton that copies voices and had been imprisoned there. Five Nights at Freddy’s: Secret of the Mimic (June 13, 2025) then told its origin: it was built by inventor Edwin Murray at Murray’s Costume Manor long before it became a killer.
Afton is not the creator of the Mimic, but he is part of its backstory. Messages signed “W.A.” in Secret of the Mimic show Afton pressuring Edwin as Fazbear Entertainment takes over Murray’s company and its land. The bigger question is what this means for Glitchtrap and Burntrap. Some fans now believe the Mimic, not Afton, was behind at least part of the Steel Wool era’s villainy, while others still see Afton’s ghost in the machine. Nothing official has settled the debate, so both remain theories for now.
π¬ William Afton in the FNAF Movies
The films tell their own version of the story, so they are not a one-to-one match for the games. In Five Nights at Freddy’s (2023), Matthew Lillard plays William Afton, who hides behind the alias Steve Raglan as Mike Schmidt’s career counsellor. He returns in the Spring Bonnie suit at the end, and the animatronics turn on him and trigger the springlocks. In the movie universe, Vanessa is his daughter.
Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 (December 5, 2025) opens with Afton murdering Charlotte Emily, introduces Freddy Carter as his son Michael Afton and Skeet Ulrich as Henry Emily, and ends with the suit containing William’s body being found and activated. A third film is expected, but as of this writing it has no officially confirmed release date.
𧩠William Afton Theories (Speculation)
Everything in this section goes beyond what the games confirm.
- Afton’s goal was immortality: his fascination with what happens to his victims’ souls and his repeated returns lead many fans to believe he wanted to cheat death. The games strongly hint at it, but never spell out his motive.
- Golden Freddy is the Crying Child: a long-running theory links the boy from FNAF 4 to Golden Freddy or Fredbear’s soul. It has never been confirmed in a game.
- Burntrap is the Mimic: since Ruin, some fans argue the Mimic wore Afton’s look, or even used his identity, in Security Breach.
- Security Breach 2 will answer it: on FNAF’s anniversary on August 8, 2026, a sequel to Security Breach from Steel Wool Studios and FNaF World 2 from Mega Cat Studios were announced. Whether Afton returns is unknown.
