Silent Hill Timeline Explained: Every Game’s Story in Order From Origins to Townfall

Halloween is around the corner, Silent Hill: Townfall has been out for a month, and Konami has already confirmed that more games are on the way. That makes this the perfect moment for the big question so many players are searching for: how do all these games fit together? Here is the Silent Hill timeline explained, from the Order’s first attempt to give birth to its god in Silent Hill: Origins to Harry Mason’s nightmare, James Sunderland’s letter, Heather’s revenge, Walter Sullivan’s 21 Sacraments and the new standalone stories of Silent Hill f and Townfall.

We stick to what the games themselves establish. Where the series never gives an exact year, we say so, and placements that only come from fan timelines are clearly marked as such.

โš ๏ธ Spoiler Warning โš ๏ธ This article spoils the stories and endings of Silent Hill, Silent Hill 2, Silent Hill 3, Silent Hill 4: The Room, Origins, Homecoming, Downpour, Silent Hill f and Silent Hill: Townfall.

๐ŸŒซ๏ธ Silent Hill Lore Explained: The Town, the Otherworld and the Order

Before we go game by game, you need three building blocks. Silent Hill is a fictional small town in Maine, located on the shores of Toluca Lake. It is haunted by a malevolent power that materializes human thoughts. The series describes this power as having once been benign, until certain events in the area corrupted it. Visitors see the town wrapped in fog, and at times it shifts into the Otherworld, a dark and rusted version of reality where physical laws stop working and where people are confronted with symbols of their own fears, guilt and unconscious minds.

The second building block is the Order, a religious cult that acts as the antagonist in several games. Its members worship a deity that is simply called God in the early games, while a document in Origins gives it the name Samael. According to the cult’s dogma, this god set out to create paradise but ran out of power before finishing, and will one day be reborn to complete its work and save mankind. To make that happen, the Order has committed ritual sacrifices, traded drugs and run an orphanage called the Wish House (also known as Hope House) under the charity front of the Silent Hill Smile Support Society.

The third building block is the series’ core idea: the town draws people in. Many protagonists come looking for a missing loved one, others seem to arrive by accident, but in truth Silent Hill is “calling” them. Almost every game also offers multiple endings, and most of them include a silly UFO joke ending that is not meant to be taken seriously.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Silent Hill: Origins Explained: Alessa Gillespie and the Failed Ritual

The earliest point in the Silent Hill timeline is Silent Hill: Origins, a prequel developed by Climax Studios and known as Silent Hill Zero in Japan. Trucker Travis Grady takes a shortcut past Silent Hill and swerves to avoid an apparition of a girl. Following it, he finds a burning house and rescues a badly burned child, Alessa Gillespie.

Alessa was born with supernatural powers, and her mother Dahlia Gillespie, a leader of the Order, wanted to use her as the vessel for the cult’s god. The fire was no accident: Alessa had been immolated in a ritual meant to impregnate her with the deity. While Travis searches the town for answers, he is forced to confront his own repressed childhood. His mother was committed to a local mental institution after trying to kill him, and his father took his own life out of guilt.

Travis also assembles the Flauros, a pyramid-shaped artifact that contains a trapped demon and can amplify thought. In the Good ending, Alessa uses it to manifest a baby containing half of her soul, which stops the ritual. Her apparition carries the infant to the edge of town, where it is found and adopted by Harry Mason and his wife, who name her Cheryl. Dahlia and Dr. Michael Kaufmann, the director of Alchemilla Hospital, keep the other half of Alessa alive and in agony, and plan to draw the missing half back one day.

๐Ÿ‘ง Silent Hill (1999) Story Explained: Harry Mason, Cheryl and the Birth of God

Seven years after the ritual, Harry drives toward Silent Hill with Cheryl for a vacation. Near the town he swerves to avoid a girl standing in the road, crashes and wakes up to find his daughter gone. The town is deserted, foggy and covered in snow that should not be falling in that season. During his search he meets Cybil Bennett, a police officer from the neighboring town of Brahms, Dahlia herself, Dr. Kaufmann and a frightened nurse named Lisa Garland.

The girl on the road was a projection of Alessa. Dahlia gives Harry the Flauros, claiming it will stop the spreading darkness, but in truth she is manipulating him into capturing Alessa’s apparition. Lisa’s diary reveals that she secretly nursed Alessa in the hospital, whose wounds never healed. Finally, Dahlia explains the whole truth: Cheryl is the missing half of Alessa’s soul, and by luring her back and reuniting both halves, the cult can finally complete the birth of its god.

Silent Hill has five endings. In the two Good endings, Kaufmann turns on Dahlia and uses a mystical liquid called aglaophotis to drive the deity out of Alessa’s body. Harry defeats it, and Alessa hands him a newborn baby, a reincarnation of herself and Cheryl, before helping him escape. Silent Hill 3 builds directly on this outcome, since Harry raises that baby as his daughter.

๐Ÿ’Œ Silent Hill 2 Story Explained: James Sunderland, Mary and Pyramid Head

Silent Hill 2 leaves the Order and the Gillespie family behind. James Sunderland comes to Silent Hill after receiving a letter from his wife Mary, who died of an illness three years earlier. The letter says she is waiting for him in their “special place”. In the town he meets Angela Orosco, a young woman searching for her mother, Eddie Dombrowski, who is on the run, the eight-year-old Laura, who knew Mary, and Maria, a woman who looks almost exactly like Mary but acts very differently.

Pyramid Head, the executioner born from James Sunderland’s guilt, in the Silent Hill 2 remake.

The big difference to the first game is that this time the town draws on the psyche of each visitor and forms a different version of itself for each of them. James is hunted by Pyramid Head, a seemingly unkillable executioner, and repeatedly watches Maria die. Beneath the Historical Society he finds images of prisoners being executed by red-hooded figures who strongly resemble his pursuer.

In the hotel where he and Mary once stayed, James finds a videotape that reveals the truth: he smothered his terminally ill wife with a pillow. There never was a letter. His mind repressed the memory and invented the story of Mary waiting for him. Pyramid Head turns out to be a manifestation of James’ own need to be punished, and once James accepts the truth, it is no longer needed. Silent Hill 2 has six endings, including Leave, In Water, Maria and Rebirth, and Konami has kept their canonicity ambiguous.

Where does Silent Hill 2 fit in the timeline? The game gives no exact year, and its story does not depend on the other games. Most fan timelines simply place it between Silent Hill and Silent Hill 3, following release order, but that placement is a convention, not an official date. The 2024 remake by Bloober Team retells the same story.

๐Ÿ˜ˆ Silent Hill 3 Explained: Who Is Heather Mason?

Silent Hill 3 is a direct sequel to the first game and takes place 17 years later. The protagonist is a teenage girl named Heather, who lives with her father Harry. At a shopping mall, she is approached by private detective Douglas Cartland, who claims to have information about her birth, and by Claudia Wolf, a mysterious woman who tells her she will help bring paradise to Earth. When Heather returns home, she finds Harry murdered on Claudia’s orders.

Harry’s journal reveals the truth: Heather is the baby Alessa gave him at the end of the first game, the reincarnation of Alessa and Cheryl. Claudia, who was Alessa’s childhood friend and is now a leader within the Order, wants Heather to give birth to the god. Harry’s murder was meant to fill Heather with hatred, which nourishes the god growing inside her. With Douglas’ help, Heather travels to Silent Hill, where she meets Vincent, a cult member who opposes Claudia, and Leonard Wolf, Claudia’s abusive father, who guards the Seal of Metatron.

In the cult’s church, Heather uses a supernatural substance Harry gave her before his death to vomit out the unborn god. Claudia swallows it herself, gives birth to the deity and disappears, and Heather defeats the newborn god. In the Normal ending, Heather and Douglas survive, and Heather goes back to her birth name, Cheryl.

๐Ÿšช Silent Hill 4: The Room Explained: Walter Sullivan and the 21 Sacraments

Silent Hill 4: The Room moves the action to the neighboring city of Ashfield. Henry Townshend has been locked inside his apartment for five days with no way to communicate with the outside world. Then a hole appears in his bathroom wall, leading into nightmarish alternate worlds where people he meets are murdered, and his radio confirms their deaths in the real world.

The killer is Walter Sullivan, a serial killer who already died in prison. Silent Hill 2 included a newspaper article about his suicide in his cell after the murder of two children. Walter was abandoned as a baby in the very apartment Henry now lives in, and he came to believe that the apartment was his mother. Dahlia Gillespie was among the cult members who brainwashed him into believing that a ritual called the 21 Sacraments, made up of 21 murders, was the only way to reunite with his “mother”. Henry is meant to be the 21st victim.

The game also ties back to Silent Hill 3 through journalist Joseph Schreiber, the former tenant of Henry’s apartment, whose article criticizing the cult’s Hope House orphanage can be found in the third game. Together with his neighbor Eileen Galvin, Henry finally confronts Walter. Silent Hill 4 has four endings, depending on whether Eileen survives and on the state of Henry’s apartment, and it is the first game in the series without a UFO joke ending.

๐Ÿช– Silent Hill: Homecoming and Downpour Explained

Silent Hill: Homecoming follows Alex Shepherd, who believes he is a soldier returning from war. A truck driver gives him a ride home, and it is none other than Travis Grady from Origins. In his hometown of Shepherd’s Glen, across Toluca Lake from Silent Hill, his younger brother Josh is missing, his father is gone and his mother is catatonic.

Alex Shepherd searches for his missing brother in Silent Hill: Homecoming.

The truth is tied to an old pact. 150 years earlier, four founding families broke away from Silent Hill’s Order to settle Shepherd’s Glen, on the condition that each family would sacrifice one of its children every 50 years. Alex was meant to be the Shepherd family’s sacrifice, but as a child he accidentally caused Josh to drown during a fight over a ring. The pact was broken, Alex was not a soldier at all but had been held in a mental hospital, and the Order reformed to appease its god. The game has five endings, from Alex leaving with his childhood friend Elle to much darker outcomes.

Silent Hill: Downpour stars Murphy Pendleton, a prisoner whose prison transport crashes near Silent Hill. Murphy had killed Patrick Napier, the man who abused and drowned his son Charlie, through a deal with corrupt corrections officer George Sewell. Officer Anne Cunningham pursues him through the town, because she believes Murphy attacked her father, Frank Coleridge, who spent years in a vegetative state. Six endings decide whether Murphy was framed by Sewell or really did it, and whether Anne forgives him. Neither Homecoming nor Downpour gives an exact year, so both are usually placed after the Team Silent games by release order.

โ„๏ธ Which Silent Hill Games Are Not Part of the Timeline?

Several entries stand outside the main continuity:

  • Silent Hill: Shattered Memories (2009), a reimagining of the first game set in a snowy Silent Hill. It keeps Harry’s search for Cheryl as a premise but tells a different story in what appears to be a separate universe
  • Silent Hill: The Short Message (2024), a free PS5 game about a girl named Anita in the German town of Kettenstadt, dealing with bullying and the pressure of social media
  • Spin-offs such as Silent Hill: Book of Memories and the cancelled Silent Hills, whose teaser P.T. was released in 2014
  • The film series, which tells its own version of the story with Rose Da Silva and Sharon, set in West Virginia

๐ŸŒบ Is Silent Hill f Connected to the Other Games?

No, not directly. Silent Hill f, released on September 25, 2025, is a standalone spin-off written by Ryukishi07 and developed by NeoBards Entertainment. It is set in the 1960s in the fictional Japanese town of Ebisugaoka and follows high school student Hinako Shimizu. When fog and red spider lilies swallow the town, Hinako has to fight monsters while she keeps waking up in a mysterious place called the Dark Shrine, guided by a man known as Fox Mask.

The story is about Hinako’s fear of growing up and of an arranged marriage. Repeated playthroughs reveal that Fox Mask is Kotoyuki of the Tsuneki clan, the man she is meant to marry. The first ending reveals that the events were a psychotic episode triggered by red capsules Hinako was taking, while the other endings, mostly unlocked in New Game Plus, explore her marriage, her rejection of it and the supernatural forces behind the fox clan. Like its predecessors, it also has a UFO joke ending. The Otherworld logic of guilt and repressed fear is the only real bridge to the Maine games.

๐Ÿ›ข๏ธ Silent Hill: Townfall Story Explained: Where Does Townfall Fit?

Silent Hill: Townfall, developed by Screen Burn Interactive and published by Konami and Annapurna Interactive, launched on September 24, 2026. Like Silent Hill f, it is a standalone spin-off with no story connection to Harry, Heather or the Order. It is set in 1996 in the fictional Scottish island town of St. Amelia.

Simon Ordell wakes up in the fog of St. Amelia in Silent Hill: Townfall.

Simon Ordell wakes up on the shore of St. Amelia with no memory of how he got there. A portable CRTV television connects him to a man named Richard, and he keeps crossing paths with Zoe Ellis, a local nurse. Bit by bit, the truth surfaces. St. Amelia depended on the petrochemical company Chapman Energy Group, whose offshore oil platform, the SWDP, was destroyed by a catastrophic fire. Simon was on board as an independent safety inspector and was the only survivor. Zoe saved his life, and Richard Shaw, the company’s CEO, arranged a lifesaving heart transplant for him in exchange for false testimony clearing the company.

The foggy St. Amelia is a purgatory-like version of the town in which Simon, Zoe and Richard relive the guilt they each carry. The endings depend on whether Simon refuses to accept the past and turns to violence, accepts his own complicity so that the town can get justice, or stays trapped in the loop. As usual, there are joke endings too. For a spoiler-free look at the game itself, check out our Silent Hill: Townfall launch guide and our roundup of the Townfall reviews.

๐ŸŽฎ What Order Should You Play the Silent Hill Games In?

Because only a few Silent Hill games are directly connected, release order works best for most players. If you care about the Alessa and Heather storyline, play Silent Hill and Silent Hill 3 back to back, and treat Origins as an optional prequel. Silent Hill 2 can be played at any time and is the best entry point for newcomers, especially in its 2024 remake. Silent Hill f and Townfall work completely on their own.

Anyone who wants to experience the original story in a modern form will soon have another option. A remake of the first Silent Hill was announced in June 2025 and is being developed by Bloober Team, but it still has no release date. Konami producer Motoi Okamoto has also said that more games are being planned, as we reported in our news on Konami’s second and third wave of Silent Hill games.

โ“ Quick Questions About the Silent Hill Timeline

Which Silent Hill game comes first chronologically?
Silent Hill: Origins, a prequel set several years before the first game.

Dahlia Gillespie’s daughter, born with supernatural powers and used by the Order as the vessel for its god. Her soul was split into herself and Cheryl, and she was later reborn as Heather.

Is Silent Hill 2 connected to Silent Hill 1?
Only through the town itself. James Sunderland’s story is self-contained and does not involve the Order’s plan for Alessa.

How many years pass between Silent Hill and Silent Hill 3?
17 years. Heather is the baby Harry received at the end of the first game.

What is Pyramid Head?
In Silent Hill 2, he is a manifestation of James’ guilt and his need to be punished, modeled after the town’s historical executioners.

Are Silent Hill f and Townfall part of the main timeline?
No. Both are standalone spin-offs set outside the American town, in 1960s Japan and 1990s Scotland.

Final Words

The Silent Hill timeline is less a single saga than a set of nightmares connected by one cursed town. At its core sits the Gillespie storyline, from Alessa’s ritual in Origins to Harry’s search in the first game and Heather’s revenge in Silent Hill 3. Around it orbit stories of personal guilt like James’, Henry’s, Alex’s and Murphy’s, and with Silent Hill f and Townfall the series has now carried its fog to Japan and Scotland. Whatever Konami’s next wave brings, the rule stays the same: Silent Hill shows you exactly what you are trying not to see. Looking for more horror lore?
