Castlevania Timeline Explained: The Complete Belmont Family Story Before Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse

Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse arrives on October 15, 2026, and it does something the series has not done in almost two decades: it returns to the classic game timeline with a brand new 2D chapter. Set in Paris in 1499, it stars Rose Belmont, the daughter of Trevor Belmont and Sypha Belnades. If you want to know where she fits, this is Castlevania timeline explained from the very beginning, a complete walk through the Belmont family story from the birth of Dracula in 1094 to the solar eclipse of 1999 and the reincarnation of the Dark Lord in 2035.

We follow the official timeline as established by the games and Konami’s material, and we clearly mark which games were later removed from canon, which belong to separate continuities, and where we are only interpreting. For Belmont’s Curse itself, we only cover what Konami and its partners have officially revealed before launch, so there are no spoilers for the new game.

⚠️ Spoiler Warning ⚠️ This article covers the stories and endings of Lament of Innocence, Dracula’s Curse, Curse of Darkness, Symphony of the Night, Portrait of Ruin, Aria of Sorrow and other classic Castlevania games.

πŸ¦‡ Quick Facts: The Castlevania Story in a Nutshell

🩸 How Dracula Was Born: Lament of Innocence (1094)

The Castlevania story begins in 1094 with Leon Belmont, a knight and baron whose betrothed, Sara Trantoul, is kidnapped by the vampire Walter Bernhard. Leon’s closest friend, the brilliant tactician Mathias Cronqvist, points him toward Walter’s castle. In the forest outside it, the alchemist Rinaldo Gandolfi gives Leon the Whip of Alchemy, a weapon that is not yet strong enough to destroy Walter.

Leon rescues Sara, but she has already been bitten and is slowly turning into a vampire. At her own request, her pure soul is bound into the whip, completing it as the Vampire Killer, the weapon every Belmont after Leon will carry. With it, Leon destroys Walter.

Then comes the twist that defines the whole series. Mathias had planned everything. Broken by grief and rage against God after the death of his wife Elisabetha, he used the Crimson Stone, an alchemical stone that absorbs a vampire’s soul, to take Walter’s power and become an immortal vampire himself. Mathias offers Leon eternal life, Leon refuses, and Mathias leaves Death, his new servant, to deal with him. Leon defeats Death and swears that the Belmont clan will hunt Mathias for all eternity. Mathias becomes the being the world will know as Dracula, and Death stays at his side for centuries.

🧩 What Happened to Castlevania Legends and Sonia Belmont?

For years, the Game Boy title Castlevania Legends, set in 1450 and starring Sonia Belmont, claimed to show the first Belmont to face Dracula. In 2002, series producer Koji Igarashi removed it from the official timeline because of story conflicts, together with Castlevania 64, Legacy of Darkness and Circle of the Moon, which he treated as a separate subseries. A 2006 Konami timeline poster in the US later included those other games again, but not Legends.

Sonia briefly came up again in 2026, when an early PlayStation Blog post about Belmont’s Curse named her as the protagonist. Sony edited the post, and Konami later revealed the real heroine: Rose Belmont. Legends remains outside the canon.

βš”οΈ Who Is Trevor Belmont? Dracula’s Curse Explained (1476)

Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse is the heart of the classic timeline and the direct prequel to Belmont’s Curse. In 1476, Dracula unleashes his monster armies across Europe from Wallachia. The Belmonts had been exiled because the people feared their powers, but with no one else able to stop the vampire lord, the Church calls on Trevor Belmont.

On his journey, Trevor can recruit three allies, each with a different ending depending on who stays at his side:

  • Sypha Belnades, a young sorceress with powerful elemental magic, who disguised herself as a man to avoid witch hunts
  • Grant Danasty, a pirate who can climb walls and change direction in mid-air
  • Alucard, Dracula’s own son, a dhampir who turns against his father

Together they defeat Dracula. Trevor later marries Sypha, uniting the Belmont and Belnades bloodlines, which is why so many later heroes descend from both families. Alucard, meanwhile, seals himself away in a long, self-imposed sleep.

πŸ”¨ Curse of Darkness (1479): Hector, Isaac and the Curse on the Land

Dracula’s death in 1476 did not end his influence. His curse lingered over Europe, spreading disease and violence. In Curse of Darkness, set three years later, the hero is Hector, a Devil Forgemaster who once served Dracula, creating demonic creatures, but betrayed him. Hector abandoned his powers and settled down with his love, Rosaly, until she was burned as a witch. The man behind her death was Isaac, Dracula’s other Devil Forgemaster, who stayed loyal to his master.

Hector’s hunt for revenge brings him into contact with Julia Laforeze, a witch who turns out to be Isaac’s sister, the mysterious time traveler Saint Germain, the holy man Zead, and Trevor Belmont himself, who distrusts Hector at first. Eventually Hector learns the truth: Zead was Death in disguise, and the whole rivalry was a plan to turn the blood-stained winner into a vessel for Dracula’s resurrection. Hector resists the curse, defeats Isaac, and defeats the revived Dracula, who fails to fully take Isaac’s body. This matters for Belmont’s Curse, because Isaac is back, still nursing a grudge against Trevor two decades later.

🏰 From Christopher to Simon (1576 to 1698): The Classic Belmonts

A century after Trevor, Christopher Belmont defeats Dracula in Castlevania: The Adventure (1576). Fifteen years later, in Castlevania II: Belmont’s Revenge (1591), Dracula strikes back by kidnapping Christopher’s son Soleil during his coming-of-age celebration and turning him into a demon, forcing Christopher to face the Count once more and free his son.

The most famous Belmont, Simon Belmont, enters the castle in the original Castlevania, set in 1691. He wins, but Dracula places a curse on him. Seven years later, in Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest (1698), the curse is slowly killing Simon. To break it, he gathers Dracula’s five remains, his rib, heart, eyeball, nail and ring, revives the Count at the ruins of his castle and destroys him once more.

πŸŒ™ Juste, Richter and Alucard (1748 to 1797)

In Harmony of Dissonance (1748), Simon’s grandson Juste Belmont inherits the whip. His best friend Maxim Kischine collected Dracula’s scattered remains, and a dark spirit born from those remains and Maxim’s jealousy of Juste takes him over. Maxim kidnaps their friend Lydie Erlanger, and Juste must free both of them.

In Rondo of Blood (1792), 19-year-old Richter Belmont storms the castle after Dracula’s servant, the dark priest Shaft, kidnaps his beloved Annette and other girls. Along the way he rescues Maria Renard, a 12-year-old orphan and distant relative of the Belmonts, who joins the fight. Richter defeats Dracula and becomes a legend.

Five years later comes Symphony of the Night (1797). Richter has been missing for a year, and Dracula’s castle has reappeared. Alucard wakes from his long sleep and finds Richter claiming to be the castle’s new lord. With help from Maria, Alucard discovers that Shaft has been controlling Richter, part of a plan to make the Belmonts destroy themselves. After freeing Richter, Alucard enters the Inverted Castle and confronts his father. The emotional core is Lisa, Alucard’s human mother, who was executed as a witch. Her death is what turned Dracula against humanity, and Alucard reminds him that her last wish was that her son should not hate humans. Dracula dies asking for her forgiveness.

πŸ“– Order of Ecclesia, Bloodlines and Portrait of Ruin (1800s to 1944)

After Richter’s era, the Belmont clan vanishes from history. In Order of Ecclesia, set sometime in the 1800s, organizations try to find new ways to fight Dracula. The Order of Ecclesia creates Dominus, three glyphs based on Dracula’s power, and chooses Shanoa as their vessel. Her fellow member Albus steals the glyphs to spare her, while the Order’s leader Barlowe secretly wants to sacrifice her to revive Dracula. The villagers of Wygol, it turns out, are the last known descendants of the Belmont clan.

In 1897, Dracula is defeated by Quincey Morris, a distant descendant of the Belmonts, a deliberate link to Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula. Castlevania: Bloodlines (1917) follows John Morris, who carries the Vampire Killer, and his friend Eric Lecarde. They hunt Dracula’s niece, Elizabeth Bartley, whose ritual sparked World War I as part of a plan to resurrect her uncle.

Portrait of Ruin (1944) continues that line during World War II. John’s son Jonathan Morris and the mage Charlotte Aulin, a distant Belnades descendant, face the vampire Brauner, who has rebuilt Dracula’s castle with the souls of the war dead. They meet a ghost called “Wind”, who is really Eric Lecarde, and rescue his daughters, the twins Stella and Loretta, from vampirism. Because Jonathan is not a direct Belmont, he can only unlock the full power of the Vampire Killer through a ritual the sisters perform.

β˜€οΈ The Battle of 1999 and Aria of Sorrow: How Dracula Finally Ended

The final war came in 1999. Led by Julius Belmont, with allies including Alucard and the witch Yoko Belnades, the hunters destroyed Dracula for good and sealed his castle inside a solar eclipse. This battle has never been made into its own game. It is told as backstory in Aria of Sorrow and Dawn of Sorrow.

Aria of Sorrow (2035) reveals the price. Transfer student Soma Cruz and his friend Mina Hakuba are pulled into the sealed castle during an eclipse in Japan. Soma discovers he can absorb the souls of monsters. The government agent Genya Arikado, Alucard in disguise, guides him, while the missionary Graham Jones claims to be Dracula’s heir. Graham is wrong. The real reincarnation of Dracula is Soma himself. An amnesiac fighter called “J”, who turns out to be Julius, agrees to stop him if he ever gives in. Soma rejects his dark destiny, and in Dawn of Sorrow (2036) he defeats a cult led by Celia Fortner that tries to create a new Dark Lord.

🌹 Who Is Rose Belmont? Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse Story Explained

Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse, developed by Konami, Evil Empire and Motion Twin and published by Konami, places a new chapter between Curse of Darkness and Christopher Belmont’s era. It is set in Paris in 1499, 23 years after Castlevania III, and it is the first new 2D story entry in the classic timeline since Order of Ecclesia in 2008.

According to Konami’s official character profiles, Rose Belmont is the daughter of Trevor Belmont and Sypha Belnades. Sypha fell victim to Dracula’s curse and died soon after Rose was born, and Rose carries that curse in her right arm. In the official premise, Paris is burning and overrun by monsters, and Trevor, “the hero who defeated Dracula”, heads into the city with Rose after a suspicious letter from the local Bishop. While Trevor seeks out the clergy, Rose is drawn into a darker conspiracy, and a version of Dracula’s castle appears in the heart of the city.

The developers have explained why the story centers on Rose. In a Famitsu interview, director Yukiko Hokao said the team had not originally planned a female lead, but the role fit a woman as the world and story took shape, so it became Trevor’s daughter. Creative director Emmanuel Nouaille described the inherited curse as a bond between mother and daughter, and as Rose’s motivation to avenge Sypha’s death and face her own fate. In gameplay, the tarot theme is part of that story: defeated bosses are sealed into Arcana cards in Rose’s deck.

Konami’s English voice cast also reveals the familiar faces Rose will meet. Abby Trott voices Rose, JB Blanc plays Trevor and Alejandra Reynoso plays Sypha, while Graham McTavish returns as Dracula. McTavish and Reynoso also voiced Dracula and Sypha in the Netflix series. Among the antagonists are Death, the vampire Carmilla, Medusa, a mysterious creature called The Fallen, a version of Joan of Arc, and Isaac, voiced by Liam O’Brien, who reprises the role from Curse of Darkness. How these figures connect to Rose’s curse is something we will leave for players to discover.

πŸ”— The Threads That Tie the Castlevania Timeline Together

Looked at as a whole, the Castlevania timeline is a story about inheritance. The Vampire Killer passes from Leon to Trevor, Simon, Juste, Richter, the Morris family and finally Julius. The Belnades bloodline runs from Sypha through Charlotte Aulin to Yoko Belnades. Alucard appears from 1476 all the way to 2035. And Dracula’s servant Death is there almost from the very beginning.

Belmont’s Curse adds another layer to that idea of inheritance. Rose literally inherits a curse along with her family name, and her mother’s death follows a long tradition in the series of grief driving the story, from Mathias losing Elisabetha to Dracula losing Lisa. That parallel is our own reading rather than an official statement, but it fits the themes Konami has highlighted so far.

🎬 Lords of Shadow and the Netflix Series: Separate Continuities

Two popular versions of Castlevania are not part of this timeline. Lords of Shadow (2010) and its sequels reboot the story with Gabriel Belmont, a knight of the Brotherhood of Light who becomes Dracula himself. The Netflix animated series Castlevania (2017 to 2021) adapts Dracula’s Curse with its own take on Trevor, Sypha and Alucard, and also borrows Hector and Isaac from Curse of Darkness. Its follow-up, Castlevania: Nocturne, follows Richter Belmont and Maria Renard in France during the French Revolution. Belmont’s Curse shares some voice actors with the show, but the game belongs to the classic game timeline.

Is Castlevania: Lords of Shadow part of the main timeline?
No. Lords of Shadow is a separate reboot continuity, and the Netflix series is its own adaptation as well.

Final Words

Strip away the release order and the Castlevania timeline is a surprisingly clear family saga: a betrayal in 1094, a whip forged from a sacrifice, nine centuries of Belmonts and their allies, and an ending in the eclipse of 1999 that still echoes in 2035. Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse slots a new name into that line. Rose Belmont carries her father’s whip and her mother’s curse into Paris, and with that, one of gaming’s oldest family stories has a fresh chapter.
