Daredevil: Born Again Is Ending After Season 3, and Marvel’s Already Lining Up a Spy-Thriller Replacement

Marvel Television and Disney+ confirmed on September 21 that Daredevil: Born Again will end its run after Season 3, the show’s currently-in-post-production third season. The news arrives alongside a bigger surprise: showrunner Dario Scardapane is exiting the production after Marvel chose not to renew his contract, leaving the season’s remaining post-production work without a confirmed creative lead.

A Showrunner Exit Nobody Saw Coming

Scardapane has run the show since Marvel rebuilt it from the ground up following the 2023 strikes, staying on through Season 2 and returning to lead the Season 3 writers’ room in October 2025. Filming wrapped this past July, roughly two months before Monday’s announcement, which makes his departure sting more than a typical showrunner exit. As TVLine put it, “it’s unclear who will see the show through completion” now that he’s gone. The move is also a reversal from where Marvel stood as recently as last year, when the studio talked up the series’ potential to keep running well past this season.

What’s Left in the Final Season

Season 2 ended with Matt Murdock publicly revealing his identity as Daredevil to corroborate Karen Page’s testimony and take down Wilson Fisk, only for that same confession to leave him facing prison time as Season 3 begins. Fisk’s Anti-Vigilante Task Force was disbanded and arrested in the process, while Heather Glenn stepped into the mask of Muse. Season 3 reunites Charlie Cox with Élodie Yung’s Elektra, and Krysten Ritter’s Jessica Jones, who already returned in Season 2, is now joined by Mike Colter’s Luke Cage and Finn Jones’s Iron Fist, marking the first time all three Defenders alumni have shared a screen since 2017’s The Defenders. Disney+ is targeting a March 2027 premiere, after VisionQuest closes out the WandaVision trilogy on October 14, a release worth tracking on Gamersuniverse’s MCU watch order guide.

Marvel’s Already Teasing What Fills the Gap

Marvel Television isn’t slowing down despite the cancellation. Days after the Born Again news broke, reports surfaced that the studio is developing a spy-thriller series under the working title Zodiac, one of three to five live-action shows currently moving through the pipeline. The name points toward the comics’ Zodiac crime syndicate, a Scorpio-led group of constellation-themed villains who’ve clashed with S.H.I.E.L.D. in the source material, and one early comparison has likened its tone to DC’s Lanterns. No cast, creative team, or release window has been confirmed, and it’s still unclear whether Zodiac is meant to fill the street-level void Born Again leaves behind or connect to Marvel’s separately planned Heroes for Hire series.
