Destiny 2 Unvaulting Update: Bungie Hints the Original Destiny Is Finally Coming to PC

Bungie shocked Destiny fans in September when it reversed plans to wind down Destiny 2’s live-service support, promising instead to restore campaigns, raids, and destinations that had been removed from the game over the years. In a new community update published today, the studio detailed how that restoration process will actually work, and buried in the announcement is a hint that the original Destiny could finally make its way to PC.

A Progress Bar Instead of a Fixed Roadmap

Rather than committing to a traditional roadmap with firm dates, Bungie head of product Josh Deane opted for a different format: a broad overview of what led to September’s reversal, split into three sections covering a First Pass of restored content, Stretch Goals the team hopes to reach, and features that likely won’t happen “for technical and/or strategic reasons,” alongside a running progress bar. Pre-production on the restoration work is underway now and is expected to continue until January or February of 2027, after which Deane said full production would take roughly another 12 months to complete the porting process.

Destiny 2’s restoration work is still in pre-production, with full porting not expected to wrap until sometime in 2028.

The Original Destiny’s PC Debut May Be Coming

The detail that stood out most was a line about one of Bungie’s longer-term “anchors” for Destiny’s future, described as a “Legacy” initiative in which the studio wants the franchise’s “whole experience” served to players “where you play today.” The original Destiny launched in 2014 and never left consoles, even as its sequel became a major presence on PC. Bungie didn’t explicitly confirm a port, but the wording strongly implies one is on the way as part of the broader restoration push, more than a decade after the first game shipped exclusively on PlayStation and Xbox hardware.

Managing Expectations

Deane was careful to temper enthusiasm around the update, noting that the plan could still change and that no Destiny-related reveal should be expected at this year’s Game Awards. The studio previously committed to restoring vaulted Destiny 2 content alongside a broader pivot for Marathon, and today’s update frames that work as the first step toward a larger, multi-year plan for the franchise rather than a quick fix.

“We get there when we get there.”

With pre-production alone running into 2027 and full porting taking roughly a year after that, players hoping to finally experience the original Destiny on PC will need patience, but Bungie’s latest update suggests the studio is serious about following through this time.

  • My previous experience with game updates suggests long wait times are often extended. Perhaps the complexity of the transition presents a different challenge for some users.
