⏳ The Time Jump Explained: Why Dune: Part Three Starts Nearly Two Decades Later

According to the official synopsis, Dune: Part Three is set nearly two decades after Paul Atreides seized control of the Imperium. That is a huge jump from the ending of Part Two, which closes right after Paul defeats Emperor Shaddam IV and orders the Fremen to take the war to the Great Houses.

The time jump means the holy war Paul feared in his visions is no longer a possibility. It has happened. Paul’s Fremen armies have carried his name across the stars for years, and the Imperium has been reshaped in his image. Warner Bros. describes Paul as a ruthless Emperor who now has to face the consequences of his reign, which tells you the story has moved from the rise of a hero to the cost of power.

It also explains one of the most noticeable casting changes. In Part Two, Alia Atreides is still unborn, awakened in the womb when Jessica drinks the Water of Life. Almost twenty years later she is a grown woman, played by Anya Taylor-Joy, and she lives at the center of Paul’s court.

đź‘‘ Where Every Main Character Stands Entering Part Three

  • Paul Atreides (TimothĂ©e Chalamet): the Emperor of the Known Universe and the messiah of the Fremen. The synopsis says he is haunted by visions of Imperial collapse.
  • Chani (Zendaya): at the end of Part Two, she walked away from Paul and rode off into the desert. The synopsis calls her his long-lost love, says she reappears in his life and puts her at the heart of the conspiracy’s mystery.
  • Princess Irulan (Florence Pugh): the daughter of the defeated Shaddam IV, claimed by Paul at the end of Part Two to secure his right to the throne.
  • Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson): Paul’s mother, a Bene Gesserit turned Fremen Reverend Mother, and the Baron Harkonnen’s daughter.
  • Alia Atreides (Anya Taylor-Joy): Paul’s sister, born with awareness and ancestral memories because of the Water of Life, now an adult.
  • Stilgar (Javier Bardem): the Fremen leader who became Paul’s most loyal believer.
  • Gurney Halleck (Josh Brolin): the Atreides warmaster who reunited with Paul in Part Two. Brolin’s return has been reported, but he isn’t listed in Warner Bros.’ official cast announcement.

🧬 Who Are the New Threats? Scytale, the Bene Tleilax and the Conspiracy Against Paul

The official synopsis promises old allies returning, terrifying new threats and betrayal in every shadow, as Paul is drawn into a sweeping conspiracy. You don’t need the details, but it helps to know who has a reason to want Paul gone. In Herbert’s novel, the plot brings together three powers that each lost something when he took the throne:

  • The Bene Gesserit: Paul is the result of their breeding program, but he slipped out of their control. Reverend Mother Mohiam, played again by Charlotte Rampling, is part of the official cast.
  • The Spacing Guild: the Guild needs spice to travel through space, and Paul now controls every grain of it.
  • The Bene Tleilax: a secretive faction that the films haven’t shown yet. The Tleilaxu are masters of genetic engineering, and the rest of the Imperium distrusts them deeply.

Robert Pattinson plays Scytale, the film’s new antagonist. Scytale is a Face Dancer, one of the Tleilaxu’s shape-shifters who can change their face and body to look like almost anyone. In a story built on suspicion and betrayal, a villain who can become anybody is the perfect threat.

Then there is Jason Momoa. Duncan Idaho died defending Paul and Jessica in Part One, yet Momoa is part of the official cast for Part Three, and the marketing suggests Duncan returns in some form. That connects to a piece of Tleilaxu lore you should know: a ghola. A ghola is a person regrown by the Tleilaxu from the cells of someone who has died. It has the same body and face, but it is not simply the same person brought back. How that plays out for Duncan is something the film should show you for itself.

🎥 Do You Need to Rewatch Dune Part 1 and Part 2 Before Part Three?

It’s not strictly necessary, but it helps a lot. Part Three builds directly on the ending of Part Two, and the time jump means the film is unlikely to walk you back through the old story. If you only have time for one, rewatch Dune: Part Two: it sets up Paul’s rule, his relationship with Chani and Irulan, Jessica’s transformation and the holy war.

Dune (2021) is still worth the time for one reason in particular: Duncan Idaho. Remembering who he was and how he died makes Jason Momoa’s return in Part Three hit much harder. Our reviews of Dune (2021) and Dune: Part Two break down both films, and our Part 1 and Part 2 lore recap is the quickest way to catch up.
