James Gunn Is Already Writing His Next Movie as Superman: Man of Tomorrow Enters Post-Production
James Gunn isn’t waiting around between movies. Asked on Threads this week whether he was ready to start writing his next script, the director gave a four-word answer: “Already in it.” Gunn added that he needed something to work on while Superman: Man of Tomorrow sits in post-production, teasing a brand new DC Studios project less than a year before his Superman sequel even reaches theaters.
A Mystery Project With No Title Yet
Gunn hasn’t revealed a title, a plot, or even whether the new film is connected to the DC Universe at all. Fans pressed for details in the replies, floating everything from a third Superman movie to a solo outing for one of Man of Tomorrow’s villains, but Gunn didn’t confirm or deny any of it. Coverage of the exchange has speculated the project will likely stay within DC Studios’ slate, though that’s reading between the lines rather than anything Gunn has said outright.
Man of Tomorrow Heads Into the Edit Bay
Man of Tomorrow wrapped principal photography on August 26, 2026, and the film is now working through its assembly cut ahead of a July 9, 2027 release. David Corenswet returns as Superman opposite Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor, with Lars Eidinger joining the DCU as Brainiac. Rachel Brosnahan, Milly Alcock, and Aaron Pierre are also back in supporting roles, continuing the story Gunn kicked off with 2025’s Superman.

Nicholas Hoult returns as Lex Luthor in Man of Tomorrow, this time forced into an uneasy alliance with Superman against Brainiac.
Gunn Has a History of Staying Quiet
This isn’t the first time Gunn has sat on a project before announcing it. He waited roughly two months after Superman’s July 2025 release before confirming Man of Tomorrow, so fans shouldn’t expect an official reveal of whatever he’s writing now anytime soon. For the moment, all anyone outside DC Studios knows is that Gunn is already working on it, whatever it turns out to be.
