Mafia III: Definitive Edition Finally Gets Native PS5 and Xbox Series X|S Versions for Its 10th Anniversary
Mafia III originally launched on October 7, 2016, and for most of its life on current-gen hardware it has only ever run through PS4 and Xbox One backward compatibility, complete with a 30 FPS cap and the occasional visual glitch on PS5. That changed on October 8, when 2K marked the game’s 10th anniversary by releasing native PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions of Mafia III: Definitive Edition, alongside a fresh update for the Steam release.
Native Current-Gen Performance at Last
The headline change is frame rate. Both the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions now target 60 FPS, a first for Mafia III on current-gen consoles, with Series X running at a higher resolution than Series S. The Xbox version also ships as its own separate listing rather than a patch to the Xbox One release, which means players get a fresh achievement list to work through. Beyond the frame rate boost, the update brings smaller improvements to lighting, texture rendering, and vegetation streaming, changes that early impressions describe as subtle rather than a full visual overhaul.

Mafia III: Definitive Edition follows Lincoln Clay through 1968 New Bordeaux, via Steam.
Quality-of-Life Fixes Across PC and Consoles
The update isn’t just about frame rate. 2K also packed in a wide round of bug fixes and quality-of-life changes that apply across PC and consoles, including smoother mission progression, improved achievement tracking, and better NPC and companion behavior. The Steam version picks up a few extras of its own, among them a new FPS lock option, improved multi-monitor support, and fixes for issues that affected windowed mode.
Free for Existing Owners, Discounted for Everyone Else
Anyone who already owns a digital copy of Mafia III: Definitive Edition, Mafia: The Omertà Collection, or Mafia: Trilogy gets the current-gen upgrade at no extra cost. One catch to keep in mind: save files from the PS4 and Xbox One versions don’t carry over to the new PS5 and Xbox Series X|S editions. 2K is also running a franchise-wide anniversary sale, with Mafia III and the wider Mafia Trilogy discounted by as much as 80% on PlayStation, Xbox, and Steam for a limited time. Mafia II: Definitive Edition remains the only entry in the collection still without a native current-gen version, though recent ESRB listings suggest an upgrade for that game could be on the way too.
