Marathon’s Creative Director Shuts Down a Viral Leak Claiming a Destiny 2 Merger

A leak that jumped from 4chan to the r/Marathon subreddit this week claimed Bungie was quietly folding Destiny 2 and Marathon into a single universe. Marathon’s creative director shot the claim down directly on X, but the rumor landed at an awkward moment for a studio that’s already fielding hard questions about both games.

What the Leak Claimed

The anonymous post alleged Bungie was internally testing a merger of the two IPs, with Marathon reframed as the start of humanity’s “Golden Age” that would foreshadow threats in future Destiny projects. It also threw in a grab bag of supposed Marathon specifics: a switch to free-to-play in December, a new six-player PvE mode called “Investigations” built around raid-style bosses, a new Runner shell named “Shrike,” Destiny-themed cosmetics, and a PvP-focused mode called “Risk Management.”

Bungie’s Response

Julia Nardin, Marathon’s creative director, who has also worked on Destiny 2’s narrative expansions and on Destiny: Rising, addressed the merger claim specifically on X. “As someone who’s worked on both Destiny and Marathon, I can confirm that the ‘leak’ about us merging the two IPs is fake,” she wrote, adding that the two games “share a lot of the same Bungie DNA,” but are “like siblings they’re also their own independent entities. Please don’t believe everything you read online.” Her statement was amplified across Bungie’s community channels.

What’s Actually Coming to Marathon

Strip out the merger claim and parts of the leak line up loosely with Marathon’s real, already-confirmed roadmap, just without the Destiny branding. An interim update lands October 6, resetting rewards and progression, tuning balance, and bringing back the “Vault Breaker” PvE mode on a limited-time basis. The bigger update, called Symbiosis, was originally planned for September but has been pushed to December 8. It adds a permanent PvE mode, a new Runner shell, a refreshed Perimeter zone, a new social space with a firing range, an experimental Team Deathmatch mode, and smoother onboarding for new players. Bungie is also ending Marathon’s strict seasonal schedule in favor of fewer, larger content drops, which is why September’s update slipped in the first place.

Destiny 2, whose active development wound down earlier this year, is the other half of the IP the leak claimed Marathon was merging with.

Why the Rumor Found an Audience

None of this is happening in a vacuum. Marathon launched as a paid extraction shooter in March 2026 and has seen a steep decline in its Steam player numbers since then, though trackers disagree sharply on the exact size of that drop depending on when and how it’s measured. Destiny 2, meanwhile, saw Bungie officially end active development with a final content update on June 9, and most of that game’s dedicated team was subsequently laid off. Zoom out further and Bungie has cut more than 600 jobs across the last three years, and is exploring subleasing most of its roughly 210,984 square-foot Bellevue, Washington headquarters. With one franchise winding down and the other visibly struggling, a rumor promising a dramatic crossover fix was always going to travel fast, even without any evidence behind it.
