Elden Ring Lore Explained: Queen Marika, the Shattering and the Full Story of the Lands Between

Elden Ring is one of the most celebrated games ever made, and also one of the most confusing to understand. Its story is scattered across item descriptions, ghostly echoes and cryptic NPC conversations, and most players finish their first journey with more questions than answers. With Alex Garland’s live-action Elden Ring film for A24 set for March 3, 2028, and the Tarnished Edition bringing the game to Nintendo Switch 2 this year, plenty of new players are arriving in the Lands Between. This Elden Ring lore explained guide walks you through the whole story: the Greater Will and the Elden Ring, who Queen Marika is, the Golden Order, the Night of the Black Knives, the Shattering, every ending and what Shadow of the Erdtree revealed.

FromSoftware tells its stories in fragments. Director Hidetaka Miyazaki wrote the main story, while author George R. R. Martin created the mythology of the age before the game begins. We stick to what the game itself establishes through its cutscenes, dialogue and item texts, point out where something is only implied, and clearly label fan theories as speculation.

⚠️ Spoiler Warning ⚠️ This article spoils the full story of Elden Ring, all of its endings and the story of the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion.

🌌 The Greater Will, the Elden Beast and the Elden Ring

At the very top of Elden Ring’s cosmology sits the Greater Will, a distant, unseen god that never appears in person. According to the game’s item texts, the Greater Will sent a golden star to the Lands Between carrying the Elden Beast, its vassal and a living embodiment of the concept of order. That beast would later become the Elden Ring itself, the force that governs life, death and the rules of the world.

The Greater Will does not speak directly. Instead, it works through envoys known as the Two Fingers, huge pale hands whose messages are interpreted by Finger Readers such as Finger Reader Enia in the Roundtable Hold. The Two Fingers choose Empyreans, candidates who may one day become the god of a new age. Queen Marika was one of them.

πŸ‘‘ Who Is Queen Marika? The God at the Heart of Elden Ring

Queen Marika the Eternal is the most important character in Elden Ring, even though you never meet her alive. As an Empyrean, she was given a shadowbound beast called Maliketh, a loyal protector described as her shadow. She became the vessel of the Elden Ring, a god in truth, and grew the Erdtree, the colossal golden tree that towers over the Lands Between and gives the land its blessings.

Her rise came through war. Together with her first husband, the warrior Godfrey, she conquered the realm. The War against the Giants in the frozen north was one of the most important campaigns, because the giants guarded the Flame of Ruin, the one fire capable of burning the Erdtree. When it became clear that the flames of their forge would never die, Marika cursed the last surviving Fire Giant to tend that flame for eternity. One of her ghostly echoes in the churches of Marika recalls this era with the words “Let a new epoch begin. An epoch glistening with life.” That age became known as the Age of the Erdtree, and Godfrey became the first Elden Lord.

βš–οΈ What Is the Golden Order? Marika and the Rune of Death

The core of Marika’s rule was the Golden Order. To create it, she removed the Rune of Death, also called Destined Death, from the Elden Ring. Maliketh sealed that power inside his black blade. Item texts also credit Maliketh with defeating the Gloam-Eyed Queen and her Godskin Apostles, who wielded a god-slaying black flame. The exact order of these events is pieced together by fans from item texts. What matters is the result: with Destined Death sealed away, death no longer worked as it once did, and the Erdtree’s order seemed eternal to the people of the Lands Between.

Removing death had a cost. It is the reason the Erdtree’s order seemed perfect for so long, and also the reason one stolen fragment of that rune could later bring the whole system crashing down.

πŸ›‘οΈ Godfrey’s Exile: How the First Tarnished Were Born

Once the wars were won, Marika turned on her own champions. In her echoes, she tells Godfrey and his warriors that she is taking away their grace and driving them from the Lands Between. The light of grace faded from their eyes, and they were cast out to fight in distant lands. But she also made a promise: after their death, she would give back what she had taken. These graceless exiles are the Tarnished, and their return is the reason the player exists at all.

πŸ”₯ Marika Is Radagon: The Biggest Twist in Elden Ring Lore

With Godfrey gone, Marika took a second Elden Lord: Radagon, a red-haired champion of the Erdtree. Radagon had led the Erdtree’s armies against Liurnia of the Lakes, home of the sorcerers of Raya Lucaria. Instead of conquering it, he married Queen Rennala of the Full Moon, head of the Carian royal family, and had three children with her: Radahn, Rykard and Ranni. Later, he left Rennala to become Marika’s consort, and his three children were raised to demigod status.

Here is the twist: Radagon and Marika are the same being. Radagon is Marika’s male other self, a fact the game spells out in one of her echoes and, most famously, on the statue of Radagon on the stairs below the Erdtree Sanctuary in Leyndell. Casting the incantation Law of Regression on it reveals the message that Radagon is Marika. This is why the final battle begins with Marika’s body transforming into Radagon.

Marika and Radagon had twins together: Malenia and Miquella. Because they were born from a single god, both were born afflicted. Malenia carries the Scarlet Rot, while Miquella is trapped in eternal youth. Both are Empyreans, just like Ranni, which made them possible successors to Marika.

πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§ Marika’s Children and the Demigods Explained

The demigods are the key players of the Shattering. Here is who belongs to which branch of the family:

  • Children of Marika and Godfrey: Godwyn the Golden, the beloved heir, and the twins Morgott and Mohg, who were born as Omens, cursed beings with horns, and confined beneath the capital.
  • Children of Radagon and Rennala: Radahn, Rykard and Ranni, who became Marika’s stepchildren.
  • Children of Marika and Radagon: the Empyrean twins Malenia and Miquella.
  • The Golden Lineage: descendants of Godfrey, including Godrick the Grafted, whom Enia dismisses as only a distant relation.
  • Messmer the Impaler: another son of Marika, only revealed in Shadow of the Erdtree.

πŸ—‘οΈ What Happened on the Night of the Black Knives?

The Age of the Erdtree ended with a murder. During the golden age, someone stole a fragment of the Rune of Death from Maliketh. With it, god-slaying Black Knives were forged, and the Black Knife Assassins, Numen women said to have close ties to Marika herself, struck on a bitter winter night known as the Night of the Black Knives.

Their most important victim was Godwyn the Golden. But because the plot was tied to a second death, the curse split. Godwyn’s soul died, yet his body lived on. At the very same moment, Ranni‘s body died, making her the first demigod to die in the flesh. As the player learns in her questline, Ranni herself admits to stealing the fragment of the Rune of Death. She did it to escape the fate the Two Fingers had planned for her, shedding her Empyrean body and moving her soul into a small doll-like vessel.

Godwyn’s soulless body was laid to rest beneath the Erdtree, and death began to spread from it through the roots as Deathroot. This gave rise to Those Who Live in Death, undead creatures that should not exist under the Golden Order.

πŸ’₯ What Is the Shattering? The War That Broke the Lands Between

After Godwyn’s death, Queen Marika was driven to the brink. She took her hammer and shattered the Elden Ring. Radagon tried to repair it with the same hammer, but failed. As punishment, Marika was imprisoned inside the Erdtree. The fragments of the ring, the Great Runes, fell to the demigods, and the power corrupted them. Their war became known as the Shattering, and in the end there was no victor and no new Elden Lord. Some of the most important shardbearers and their fates:

  • Starscourge Radahn: the mightiest warrior of the age, who used gravity magic to halt the stars in their courses. He met Malenia, Blade of Miquella in battle in Caelid. She unleashed the Scarlet Rot in a massive bloom, the Scarlet Aeonia, which left Radahn a mindless, rotting husk wandering the battlefield and devouring the dead. Malenia fell into a deep slumber and was carried back to Miquella’s Haligtree by one of her Cleanrot Knights.
  • Morgott, the Omen King: despite being shunned as an Omen, Morgott became the defender of Leyndell and the Erdtree, and also hunted Tarnished in disguise as Margit, the Fell Omen.
  • Mohg, Lord of Blood: Morgott’s twin, who served a dark Outer God and took Miquella’s sleeping body from the Haligtree to his palace, hoping to make him a god and become his consort.
  • Rykard, Lord of Blasphemy: fed himself to the God-Devouring Serpent at Volcano Manor to wage war against the gods.
  • Godrick the Grafted: the weakest of the demigods, who rules Stormveil Castle and grafts the limbs of others onto his body to gain strength.
  • Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon: Radagon’s abandoned wife, who holds the Great Rune of the Unborn in the Academy of Raya Lucaria.

🐎 The Tarnished’s Journey: Elden Ring Story Explained

This is where the player comes in. True to Marika’s promise, grace returns to the dead Tarnished, who rise again and return to the Lands Between. Early on, the player meets Melina, who offers to act as their maiden, turning runes into strength and giving them the spectral steed Torrent. Her condition: the Tarnished must take her to the foot of the Erdtree.

A Tarnished resting at a Site of Grace under the night sky in Elden Ring

Sites of Grace guide the returning Tarnished across the Lands Between, always pointing toward the Erdtree.

At the Roundtable Hold, the Two Fingers, through Finger Reader Enia, task the Tarnished with collecting Great Runes and becoming Elden Lord. After defeating enough demigods, the Tarnished enters Leyndell and defeats Morgott. With his last words, Morgott warns that the Erdtree wards off all who approach, and indeed the way inside is blocked by a wall of thorns.

To burn the thorns, the Tarnished travels to the Mountaintops of the Giants, defeats the Fire Giant and reaches the Forge of the Giants. There, Melina sacrifices herself to set the Erdtree ablaze with the Flame of Ruin, unless the Tarnished has accepted the Frenzied Flame, in which case Melina leaves them and the Tarnished lights the fire with that power instead.

As the Erdtree burns, the Tarnished is carried to Crumbling Farum Azula, where they face Maliketh, the Black Blade. He had been hiding in plain sight as Beast Clergyman Gurranq. Defeating him releases the Rune of Death, which fuels the fire. Back at the scorched capital, the Tarnished finally reaches the inside of the Erdtree, where Marika’s body becomes Radagon of the Golden Order. After Radagon falls, the Elden Beast itself emerges, the true form of the Elden Ring. With both defeated, the Tarnished stands before Marika’s shattered body and the remains of the Elden Ring.

🏁 Elden Ring Endings Explained: All Six Endings

What happens next depends on your choices. The game has six endings, commonly known by these names:

  1. Age of Fracture: the default ending. The Tarnished mends the Elden Ring as it is and becomes Elden Lord, restoring the old order.
  2. Age of Order: using the Mending Rune of Perfect Order from Goldmask‘s questline, the Tarnished creates a Golden Order perfected and free of the fickleness of gods.
  3. Age of the Duskborn: using the Mending Rune of the Death-Prince from Fia‘s questline, death is restored to the order and Those Who Live in Death are accepted.
  4. Blessing of Despair: using the Mending Rune of the Fell Curse from the Dung Eater‘s questline, the Tarnished curses all life.
  5. Age of the Stars: after completing Ranni‘s questline, the Tarnished summons her instead. She becomes the new god and leaves the Lands Between with the Tarnished as her consort, taking her order far away into the stars.
  6. Lord of Frenzied Flame: if the Tarnished accepted the Frenzied Flame from the Three Fingers, they burn the world to ash. Miquella’s Needle can remove the flame and prevent this ending.

FromSoftware has never declared any ending canon, so every one of them is a valid conclusion to your Tarnished’s story.

πŸŒ‘ Shadow of the Erdtree Lore: Messmer, Miquella and Marika’s Past

The Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, released on June 21, 2024, opened up the Land of Shadow, a region veiled from the rest of the world and dominated by the Scadutree. To reach it, the Tarnished must defeat Radahn and Mohg, then touch the withered arm of Miquella in his cocoon.

The Land of Shadow holds Marika’s darkest secrets. Her son Messmer the Impaler, who carries a serpent within him, led a brutal crusade there against the Hornsent, a people living around the tower of Enir-Ilim, and was eventually abandoned by his mother. The expansion also strongly suggests that Marika herself came from the Shaman Village in this land, a people persecuted by the Hornsent, and that she ascended to godhood at the Gate of Divinity atop Enir-Ilim.

The Scadutree looms over Shadow Keep, Messmer’s stronghold in the Land of Shadow.

Miquella’s story is the expansion’s central mystery. Long before the Shattering, he had promised to take Radahn as his consort once he became a god. His “abduction” by Mohg turns out to be far less simple than it seemed: Miquella had placed a charm on Mohg and used him to reach the Land of Shadow. Following his trail, the Tarnished defeats Messmer to burn away the thorns sealing the Gate of Divinity and finally confronts Miquella’s plan. The final boss is Promised Consort Radahn, brought back as Miquella’s consort, and the game strongly implies that Mohg’s body served as the vessel for his return. Miquella joins the battle in its second phase, and defeating them ends his ascension.

Miyazaki said before release that Shadow of the Erdtree would be the first and only expansion for Elden Ring. A separate co-op spin-off, Elden Ring Nightreign, followed in 2025 with its own standalone setting.

πŸ€” The Big Open Questions (Speculation)

Elden Ring deliberately leaves some threads open. The following points are fan theories and interpretations, not confirmed facts:

  • Why did Marika shatter the Elden Ring? The game never fully explains it. Many players read it as rebellion against the Greater Will, possibly tied to her grief over Godwyn and the secrets revealed in the Land of Shadow.
  • Who is Melina? Melina can share Marika’s echoes and is closely tied to the Erdtree and to fire. A popular theory holds that she is a secret daughter of Marika, but the game never confirms it.
  • Who planned the Night of the Black Knives? Ranni admits her role, but the assassins’ ties to Marika lead many fans to believe that Marika herself was involved in the plot.
