DC Studios Officially Confirms Mason Thames as Robin in Dynamic Duo

DC Studios has put an end to months of speculation about who will play Dick Grayson in its upcoming animated feature Dynamic Duo. Co-chairman Peter Safran confirmed to Collider that Mason Thames, star of The Black Phone and How to Train Your Dragon, will voice the original Robin, marking the first time the studio has put the casting on record rather than leaving it to outside reports.

Two Robins on Diverging Paths

Dynamic Duo traces the early days of Batman’s first two Robins, Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, the latter voiced by Logan Kim. In the comics, Dick grew up as an orphaned circus performer while Jason survived a harsher life on the streets of Gotham City before Bruce Wayne took him in, and the film is expected to follow the two as they start out as friends before their paths diverge dramatically. Safran said Thames pursued the role with obvious enthusiasm throughout the audition process, calling him “a wonderful young actor, but boy, did he want this.”

Puppetry From the Studio Behind Dynamic Duo’s Look

The film is being brought to life by Swaybox Studios, the New Orleans based animation house founded by Arthur Mintz and Theresa Andersson, who direct and produce the project respectively. Swaybox blends computer imagery, stop motion animation and real time puppetry into a technique Safran compared favorably to the impact Pixar’s Toy Story once had on animation, and he expects the process to move faster on future productions now that the studio has worked through the research and development on this first one.

Dynamic Duo also adds Lee Pace and Steve Buscemi as the two leaders of the Red Hood Gang, the street crew that pulls Jason Todd into conflict with his future partner. The film sits outside James Gunn’s mainline DC Universe, instead tied to Matt Reeves’ Batman films, and it is set to hit theaters on September 22, 2028, after Warner Bros. shifted the release date earlier this fall to clear room on its 2028 slate.
